We stayed in Lavender cottage, a two bedroom, two bathroom cottage, for a week in September 2017.
The cottage is beautifully appointed, very clean, of a very high standard and well equipped for cooking. The beds (one double and two singles) are very comfortable and the standard throughout the bungalow is very high.
The lounge has comfortable sofas and a TV with plenty of channels as well as a DVD player and a range of DVDs. The internet is very good and reliable.
There is a separate utility room with a good washing machine for use by all guests.
The attention to detail and all the small touches throughout really make this an exceptional property.
The southerly views from the cottage are amazing as the cottages are located up a steep road (aren’t they all in Madeira!) a few hundred feet above the sea below and the property has with two patios to sit on that allow you to take the sun all day long and look out to sea. There is a lovely dining area with sliding glass doors on two sides which is great for breakfast or an evening meal as there is everything available to cook a full English roast!
There are ceiling fans in both bedrooms.
Lavender cottage shares a lovely refreshing fresh water pool with the neighbouring one bedroom cottage and the studio which is located at the owner’s house just up the drive. There are plenty of sun loungers and a large umbrella. There is ample off-road parking with electric gates so the properties are very secure.
Banda Do Sol is located at the western end of the island about 45 mins (and 34 tunnels!) from the airport. It’s easy to find if you follow the very good directions. It’s about 30 mins to Funchal town.
There are a number of supermarkets nearby in Calheta and Ribiera Brava – we found the Continente chain to be best. There are also local restaurants and we only tried New Era in Calheta which was very good.
Banda Do Sol is a fantastic choice if you want peace and quiet, great views and you’re happy to drive as it’s a great base from which to explore the whole wonderful island of Madeira. Don’t miss the lighthouse at Ponta Do Pargo, Porto Moniz, the Nun’s Valley (Curral das Freiras), the peak at Pico Areeiro, the little houses in Santana and of course Funchal itself with the cable cars and Botanical and Tropical gardens.
Last but not least we must mention Heather the owner – she is a wonderful host with loads of local knowledge and can’t do enough to help her guests have a wonderful stay. There was a nice welcome pack of essentials (food/drinks) waiting for us on arrival and the whole experience of booking, payment and arrival was one of the best we’ve ever experienced. Heather’s aim is to make Banda Do Sol a ‘home away from home’ and it certainly lives up to that motto.
Lavender cottage gets the thumbs-up and 5*’s from us. If you want to know anything more please get in touch.
