We had always said that there were too many places in the world to see to visit anywhere twice, but we have made Bequia (third visit) and Ginger Lily (second visit), the exception! The island is not straightforward to get to, fly to Barbados or St Lucia, Liat on to St Vincent, then one hour ferry to Bequia, but long may that continue as the island really is unspoilt by any massive development or chain hotels, and feels like the Caribbean of 50 years ago.
We just love the place! We see the green roof of Ginger Lily as we come in to the harbour on the ferry, and we know we are truly on holiday! Perched high on the hill (not for the faint hearted when it comes to walking up and down, but great exercise!) with stunning views of the bay, the house is just exceptional. This time we brought our grown up children and their partners, and the great layout of the house meant we could all be together for meals, around the pool etc, but there are plenty of places to relax if anyone wanted their own space. Pearl and Jonathan, our hosts couldn’t have been more helpful, even picking up some wine for us from their supplier in St Vincent when they went over for the day on the ferry! Equipment in the house is top class, good WiFi, an amazing new fridge with great ice maker, range and washing machine (with washing powder supplied ...unusual in many holiday rentals), made our stay even more comfortable. The pool is spotless and long enough to swim laps.Shirley the housekeeper came in once during our 10 day stay, cleaned through and changed all the linen.
Taxi drivers are all very friendly, as is everyone on the island. We went early morning running a few times, and were always greeted with “hello” and a smile or a bit of banter by everyone we saw!
Minor negatives: Eating out is so/so, most restaurants and bars are in a beautiful setting by the water, but portions are generally not large, and quite expensive and service can be slow. Mac’s pizzas were the exception! We preferred using the BBQ at the house most nights.
Mosquitoes can be a problem after rain showers, the house beds have nets, but we used the spray and coils provided which helped. But then you are among nature and not in a sanitised hotel!
