The previous review about this place offers a good description of the hotel, so I'm mainly adding three pictures and a few comments. This is such a basic, old, tired, rustic and a spartan place that it is like travelling back in time. Just the sight of the diesel heating furnace (which actually didn't work) makes you feel you are at the beginning of the XXth Century. The room was quite cold too, and in addition to that, there was no hot water (and the sink's tap was broken). The room didn't look so clean either, while we also have the impression there were some bed bugs. The old man that attended us wasn't either very friendly, although we were the only guests they had (we bargained and got room #3 with private bathroom for 50.000LL, a price that included a very basic breakfast downstairs, where they have a "restaurant"). In our eyes, the only good point about this place is its location, just in front of the entrance to the astonishing Baalbek archaeological site, which we could see from the window.…
It's basic, it's rustic, it's tired, but it's ideal as a cheap place to spend the night. We had a group of seven travelling around Lebanon and needed an inexpensive place to sleep in Baalbek. Hotel Shouman was ideal for this: it's located right next to the ruins with a spectacular view of them from the balcony window in rooms 1-3 (there's only four rooms in total here). There's a few very basic beds with foam mattresses in each room. They're surprisingly very comfortable and each room is equiped with a diesel heating furnace for the colder months. The place has little insulation so the rooms get cold when the weather isn't warm. The old building the hotel is located in is beautiful. It's an old colonial construction with high ceilings, elegant doorways and has the potential to be absolutely spectacular with a little love. The whole place hasn't seen any renovation in decades though. The paint is tired, the doors creak and aren't easy to open and close, it's dusty, but the bathrooms are basic and functional, hot water is available and showers are working. None of it is any more than one-star, bring your own towels, but for the price (we paid $100USD total for seven people) it's unbeatable and we were very happy and satisfied with our one night stay. Breakfast was not included, but there's plenty of local places to get manousheh, coffee, tea, etc a few steps away. There's also exchange places close and some excellent antique shops too. The old guy who runs the place speaks good English, although you might have to coax it out of him initially. He's nice, willing to help and always ready to provide more toilet paper, soap, etc if needed. In short: don't expect a lot, but what you get is ideal for a cheap, rustic place to sleep and a wonderful view of Roman Baalbek. We'd stay again in a heartbeat.…
