Really solid museum. Had large galleries of a variety of pieces, all highlighting southern artists. Convenient location. Recommended.

An interesting, spacious and informative museum. The curators did a good job bringing in examples of early painting (including examples of Spanish, bonapartist French portraiture), impressionism, abstract expressionism as well as later more ideological movements. Despite a relatively light touch re: SJW propaganda and wokism, they pay requisite homage by elevating substandard pieces, artists and genres while counting on the fact that most visitors won't know the difference.
It was interesting to see, then, that the South could not and did not escape the rest of the world - first, by importing academics from Europe and metropolises (NYC) who mentored local painters in then-contemporary trends, and by faithfully subscribing to ideological trends and obsessions du jour. The most impactful, for me, were the photographs of black and white daily life in the Old South, which stand out with their unadorned truth that transports you immediately into the past. I also liked examples of folk art meeting academic painting (or not), and a few sculptures. All in all, a worthwhile thought-provoking visit.

I thought this would be a yawn. That's the jaded part of me. However, I was enthralled by the variety and beauty of the collection I found here. The day we were there the museum was hosting a Martin Luther King special event which made the museum especially lively - and crowded. I would like to return when I can fully soak in the art.

This museum is easily accessable by street car. The exhibits are beautiful, challenging, and give you an opportunity to think. I found 2 exhibits that I really loved. There is a wonderful exhibit done by children with a resident artist. It is beautiful and shows the determination of the children to create beautiful art.
The volunteer at the gift store was very helpful.

I think we wanted this museum to be something other than what it was. While it did display a significant portion of southern art, the genres were vast and often had one or two pieces before moving on to another representation. Overall, eclectic, but possibly enjoyable if you particularly love museums.

Beautiful building near the WW2 Museum (which we did on our last visit). It was hot outside and the AC was blasting! Lots of regional art which was fascinating. Not for someone who is looking for more "known" art. They had a beautiful photography exhibit on Southern summers which we enjoyed. I really liked seeing Clementine Hunter and Ida Kohlmeyer since I knew a little bit about them - but most artists I was not familiar with. We spent about an hour - hour and half there which was more than enough time. We had scheduled ourselves for three hours - which was a bit too much so we walked over to Julia Street (which had been recommended to us) and went through some of the art galleries - also a must do with a wide range of art!

Essentially 3 floors for viewing, logically laid out and easy to track through. While not so much in the 'fine art' vein, it is nevertheless enjoyable. Some items thought provoking as intended, some excellent regionalism and 'real people' - think ashcan school translated into modern south. Parking at meters pretty simple, pretty close. Worth a visit and I personally would (did) select it over the Confederate museum next door. There is also a skyline roof deck, but I'm not quite sure why - 4 floors up, not much to see. Best used for cocktails by the donors.

We visited on Family Day at the museum. Admittance was FREE. Pay parking was available right next door. No issues there. We were greeted upon entry and everyone was nice and attentive. Museum was clean and area surrounding the museum was clean as well.
We met a local artist and she did crafts with myself and my kids. i am still amazed how she has the eye to create such great art pieces from recycled material .
Museum has 5 floors and an elevator is available, stairs is always an option.
It is Southern Art, don't visit thinking you will see anything other than just that.
Overall I recommend. Great visit with two teens and a preteen.

As above, though I'll add the exhibits we saw were well curated with a good deal of information to supplement and explain the material, so if you want to immerse yourself in the exhibits (and spend more than 90 minutes) you can.

You can use the cable cars, there is a stop at St. Charles and Joseph; or at Lee Circle for inbound. There is a lot across the street, one at the WW2 Museum and others in the area. I recommend putting together a couple of activities in the area and lunch or dinner - many options. Galleries on Julia. Confederacy Museum is nice. WW2 is a half day. Area is pretty cool.
