Amazing trip! We went to go star gazing at night however the road is blocked by a lava flow around the 9000 foot level. I do hope they repair the road its an amazing sight day or night. Still worth the trip even though its partially blocked.

Visite impossible car la route est fermée suite à une coulée de lave qui date de novembre 2022. Malheureusement aucun panneau sur la route pour indiquer que l’accès au final est impossible. Donc nous avons été très déçu.

The best spot in the world for stargazing! Sadly we couldn’t go all the way up to the observatory because the ask you to arrive at least one hour before the sunset starts (at least 5:30 pm). There is a small hike to climb a little mountain to see the full dome of stars, totally worth it!

Note: observatory was closed to the public due to covid but we went for the view at 11K ft.
The road is not for the faint of heart. It's 15 miles of hell. Undulating, climbing paved road that made everyone nauseous. Driving through a moonscape at times as you go through the cloud layer. The view was fantastic and worth the drive. You can see the Mauna Kea observatories easily as well as Maui, ocean, and more. NO restroom and it was obvious that many folks had been using a section of rocks as a bathroom (ugh!).

Very exotic but very challenging hike up to the volcano crater. The way is full of rocks beautiful but sharp so cant sit&rest really. The hike takes all day from dawn to dusk.

Being this high on an island in the middle of the ocean is really fun. I felt like I was back on peaks in Colorado. Don't drive it if you don't have a four-wheel drive---mostly that is to protect the road. If you are into astronomy, this is THE place to see. Also, stop in Waimea and go to the visitors center.

Drove all the way up. It's a one lane road with nothing but volcanic rock on both sides. We saw maybe 15 other cars on the way up and back

The protests over the Thirty Meter Telescope continue and access to Mauna Kea is stopped, tourists can drive easily up onto Mauna Loa for the great views and star gazing.

A must visit, rented a SUV, filled the gas tank at Cosco's, preceded to Mauna Loa, a steep incline going up at a steddy pace. There was markers, at different intervals monitoring Mauna Loa. Construction was being done at the base of where an encampment of those who were monitoring the Observatory as well self contained encampments for exploratory research, which was confirmed on 60 minutes. We from a cloudy misty sky to a bright blue sky, to cloudy overcast and light rain an humid mist. As we ascended to the top we could see a break in the weather, clear sky, the Observatory's where open, as we approached they closed. We got off to see what it was like, within 20 seconds I could feel the pressure of the altitude. It hit me like a ton of bricks. With in seconds the temperature dropped to 45" degrees, with a misty wind blowing light rain, felt like bebee's hit my skin, I took a windbreaker, in case of rain and drop of temperature. You could see open vents of steam, coming from Mauna Loa, signs not to venture into the area cordoned off. An adventure for those wanting to do, something out of the norm of laying on the beach, and exploring hidden treasures. Would like to visit at night and see the sky at its splendor.

Hi,
I am planning to visit the Big Island in the beginning of January and the two summits, if possible. There are some of the questions I have.
About Mauna Loa, How far does the road reach from the top and how difficult is it, especially on descent? Does the road covered with snow? Where is the observatory located on this route? How difficult is it to hike at such elevation?
Thank you a lot !

You will need to book the trip with a local company. They are well advertised. They pick you up from a pre determined spot in a local shopping area and then take you in their 4 X4 truck. You cannot hike up this road.
Ordinary car will not go to the top because it is very steep and the last half mile is covered in ice. It is hard ice at the top so it is very slippery.
The top is at 14,000 ft or so ASL so it is quit difficult. You can get breathless and might experience some head ache. Drink plenty of water. But don't let this worry you, if you are sensible, don't run when you are at the top, you will be ok. The sun set views at the top are breath taking (really, and no pun intended!!).
There are 14 different observatories (if I remember correctly), all at the very top. You can not go inside them as they are for professional scientists.
You do your start gazing at about 8000 ft ASL. The guide will carry a huge telescope and will set it up. This is great fun to watch the night sky. Choose a night which is dark, like nearer to the no-moon night. The spectacle of night sky is amazing. This will be one of your best nights.
And yes, must carry many layers of warm clothing: it does get very very cold.
Enjoy.

Mauna loa or Muana Kea?
I want to know which one has better views and if I should plan to see both places if I have the time?

There a good views from both mountains if it is a clear day but both are so different. From Mauna Loa you can see the observatories twinkling in the sunshine on Mauna Kea. You can only drive up to 11,000ft on Mauna Loa and only as far as the visitor centre on Mauna Kea unless you have a 4x4. So many things to think about. Volcanic tubes and Lava fields on Mauna Loa. Try searching more on the internet to get more perspective and comments

There are tours by appointment only. We did not do a tour. There are plenty of state park volunteers who are very knowledgeable. There are telescopes set up to see planets and stars. It varies during the year.

You would have to check their website. We just drove up to see the view at 11,000ft. You may be thinking of Mauna Kea where the telescopes are. That is open everyday I think. During the day you can take a tour of the Keck Twin telescopes. The rangers will take you in. Stop at the visitor center to find out when they are going in. Everyone has to be off the top 1/2 hour after sun set but there is a parking lot at 12,000 ft to star watch and the visitor center is open late. You will see a cloud running across the center of the sky. That is the Milkyway Galaxy. They set up telescopes to view stars and planets with. It is at 9,500 ft. Dress warm it goes down to the 30s You must have 4wd to go to top. Need more info just ask. I have been to the big island and Maui 5 times.
