Tucked along the southern end of Lake Champlain and across from Fort Ticonderoga is a Vermont State Park called Mount Independence. This spot was a crucial part of the American Revolutionary War along with Fort Ticonderoga. The park is easy to find and has a picnic spot under the trees. There is a main building that offers a small museum of relics, interaction videos, an educational film on the history of the place, bathrooms and a gift shop. There are guided tours if you wish to take one or you can walk the trails on your own. One of the trails is made to be wheel chair accessible and is easy to walk. There are other trails that are more like easy hiking trails . Great for a day trip or a place to stop on a visit to Vermont. If Fort Ticonderoga is on your list of places to visit, then this should be to as Mont Independence and Fort Ticonderoga worked together to secure the southern end of Lake Champlain. There is a ferry that runs from May to Nov that crosses the lake so access is easy.

If you are looking for spectacular ruins or restoration of a fort then this may not be the place for you. On the other hand if you don’t mind walking then the trails have interpretive signs that point out where fortifications might have been located. During its occupation all of the trees had been cut down. Once it was abandoned the forest was allowed to reclaim its place. Still great views of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga on the other side. Nice little museum too. Oh....bug spray is not a bad idea before tackling the trails.

My son and I really enjoyed our visit. The museum is small but had very interesting artifacts in it. Good movie shown explaining the site- very helpful to understand the area. We enjoyed the blue trail/ easy walk with great sites along the way. Add the orange trail to the Star Fort Barracks for a more thorough tour.

My wife and I were traveling across Vermont on vacation enjoying the changing leaves and some of the historical sites. We stopped into Mt. Independence and were glad that we did. It's free to the public and we were able to get out of the car and walk through what was at one time an incredible American Revolutionary war fortification guarding the traffic on Lake Champlain. We felt a part of the history as we imagined what it would have been like to have been a soldier serving in this fortress. The scenery around it was incredible as well. I would highly recommend stopping here.

We've been to Fort Ticonderoga, on the other side of the lake, many times. It was time to see the other pieces of the American line of defenses: Mount Independence.\
We really liked that this was it's own very unique experience: At this site, you wander through heavily wooded areas and small meadows to get to the subtle archaeological remains. I really enjoy this kind of experience, where you gain an understanding of how nature can reclaim place that were at one time considered vital human outposts.
Plus, being on a "mount" means some fantastic viewpoints of Lake Champlain and the surrounding topography, absolutely beautiful!

Mt. Independence was built in 1776 to 1777 to guard against an attack on the colonies by the British from the north. Across Lake Champlain is Fort Ticonderoga which was captured by Ethan Allan and the Green Mountain boys in 1776. This fort guarded forces coming from the south.
Vermont has built a small museum here that explains the reasons for building the fort and the hardships encountered particularly in the winter of 1776-1777.
There are trails that take you by story boards explaining the layout of the fortifications.
Admission is $5 for people over 15, and well worth the price.

What a great site to visit in the countryside of Vermont. There are different trails taking the explorer to different areas in this Revolution-era military complex (yes, complex. This wasn't just a fort). From multiple vantage-points you can see Fort Ticondaroga and Mount Defiance across beautiful Lake Champlain.
But a word to the wise. Wear high socks or long pants. It looks like they clip the grass on site here, but there are areas where the grass does get high, so caution with regards to ticks. And yes, I found one on my sock, thank you very much. So leave your stupid ankle and heel socks at home. Yeah, I'm talking to you with your Nikes and red bull.
Once completing the hike, there is a museum (one from whence you bought your ticket to explore the site) with many artifacts from the site. It's a nice reprieve in the air conditioning looking at a heavy cannon found on the lake bed sitting undisturbed for centuries, after hiking on a hit day. Shop has some cute souvenirs; like patches, flags, era toys, books, etc.

On the spur of the moment my daughter and I decided to take the ferry over from Ticonderoga to the shores of Vermont to explore the heavily wooded Mt. Independence State Historic Site. Are we ever glad we did!
Cloudless skies and hot temps made the perfect combination for a ferry ride over to Vermont and Mt. Independence. We were informed by a local that there wasn't much to see at this historic site, but as nice as he was, he obviously hadn't been there in awhile. There is a beautiful information center with short video (very interesting), and numerous trails to explore. As history buffs, this truly did connect the dots with respect to historical events that took place in the area in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Then you will love this terrific piece of America. It is a pristine area that is virtually unchanged since 1777. It was a critical part of the Revolutionary War. Certainly worthwhile for history buffs but great for anyone who loves hiking and great vistas of
Lake Champlain. The only restroom is in the visitor center .The visitor center is open seasonally from May to October 10th but access to the parking lot and trails is year round. There are five other major Revolutionary War sites in the region. The 6 or so miles of trails are different grades but all have views and they loop . If you are going off season download the trail map and driving directions before you go.

Beautifully groomed grounds both natural and preserved areas. Three levels of walking trails that include some suited for wheelchairs and strollers. Taking the Baldwin Trail there are kiosk signs explaining what you are seeing. The scenic overlook has a grand view of Ft. Ticonderoga in NY and a picnic table for a picnic lunch like we did.
We decided to go down the Orange Trail which is a mowed trail for most of it and an easy walk but not good for wheelchairs. On the way we got another scenic overlook facing Mount Defiance. Hard to believe that sharp shooters were accurate 250 years ago from the top. We went down to the Star Fort Barracks which has fascinated me for a long time. When we watched the informational video I thought that I heard that they had laid logs to show the form. Sadly they weren't there but a cedar tree was. The well was worth seeing. There have been many archeological digs on the site and the information is well presented.
As it was a very hot day, we didn't walk the other trails but plan to return and visit the other ones. The museum information center, a remake of a batteau, is where you buy your tickets to walk the trails and to see artifacts and a short informational movie. The gift shop is well stocked with something for everyone especially historians. Clean bathrooms are in the museum are free.

If we take the ferry without bringing a car over from Ticonderoga, how far is it? Is there transportation or should we bring the car over?
