We recently took a trip to San Antonio and Hill Country and decided to visit one of the bat caves in the area. We weren't sure which one to visit, so we decided on the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve, and were NOT disappointed at all. We literally had to cross rivers and streams to get there. It's off the beaten path, so we literally had to drive on a dirt road between privately owned ranches and hunting lodges to get there.

It's a little hard to find, there is one turn which you have to make to get in to the area. But once you're there, there are several volunteer rangers who assist in getting you seated. They have built a very small arena type seating at the mouth of the cave. This is where the wonder happens.

When dusk sets in, one bat will fly out of the cave. Be patient. When they say 3 million bats, they mean 3 million bats. A literal whirlwind of bats fly out of the cave and continue to fly out. There was an older gentleman ranger who explained everything as it was happening and his presentation was very informative and welcoming of questions. We had a blast.

You end up smelling like ammonia after leaving (from the bat guano - I know yuck), but even as picky as I am, I say it was well worth it.

Suggestions, bring some bug spray, make sure you fill up your gas because it's like 30 miles before a gas station, and be prepared to enjoy.

There are two roads from two different directions that lead into the area. Make sure you are aware of the mileage as you pass markers because it is remote. Also, you will be on dusty dirt roads and will cross a river. Be mindful of the amount of rain that has occurred. Bring water for the car and a flashlight for the trail, along with a camera. Wear tennis shoes and insect spray. Driving directions are posted on the Nature site and be sure call the phone number to learn the time the gate will open. It is the closest experience to a bat flight that we have experienced. There were two waves of bat groups that left for a night hunt. Several coach whip snakes were hunting on the ground and a hawk circling above us. Just amazing.

The drive is long and slow but the experience is fantastic! We've been to a few Texas caves to see bats but none came close to this one. The guide was knowledgable and kind. The bats emerged earlier than normal and we learned a ton! There were a couple of snakes toward the bottom of the cave that preyed upon fallen bats. It was a bit nerve racking but terrific at the same time. We are hoping to go back the next time we are in the area.

First of all, allow LOTS of time for the drive, because if you drive slow, you will see an incredible amount of wildlife in the open range (look out for loose livestock!!) territory you will cover to get there. And then there is the river crossing. Looks like a big YIKES but it's safe and cool to do :) I snagged a front row seat, got my camera ready and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the bat colony head out for their nightly meal. It was a totally incredible experience. Our hostess Vikki was extremely informed about their lives and was able to answer any of the questions the avid audience threw at her. I will definitely go again.

This was such an incredible experience, I barely know where to start. Our drive there was an adventure in itself (we didn't have totally complete directions), but once we made it there, the drive was totally forgotten. The presentation that was given was very informative, and quite the learning experience. There is a lot of walking involved to get down to the bat cave, but the trail is well traveled and marked, but be prepared to watch where you step and know that it's uphill and downhill and a bit of a trek. TOTALLY worth it!

Be aware there is a low water crossing of James Ricer. River was up and there was just no way to get there. BUT we STILL regard the trip as a success. The drive in was so beautiful...it's worth it for just that! Saw LOTS of deer (including a new born fawn), feral hogs, jack rabbits, cotton tails, etc.

We own the ranch house right across the river from the Bat Cave the Bar None Ranch. We have been going to the bat cave for decades and it never gets old. People rent our ranch the Bar None Ranch just to come see the bats. The emergence is spectacular!

This cave is unique because it's only females and their young who are here. Best to drive a truck to this remote location.
