When we went (mid-March, 2025) it was only open on Weds and Sats - though that may have changed?
NB: Unless you go on the guided tour, you can only view the outside of the mills.
The tours are at 11am and 1.30 on those days - and cost £7.50 per adult; kids under 16 are free.
Our guide was Tony - and he was great!
(He was born and raised in Belper, so knows the area's history very well.
In fact he grew-up in one of Strutt's original "factory houses".
Be sure to ask him about his memory of the factory being strafed by a German plane at the very end of WW2!)
His colleague in the office/reception - up a few steps at the rear of the building - was also most friendly and helpful - thank you!
After the tour (mostly outside - so dress warmly if it's chilly! - have a walk around the lovely High St - and walk the cobbled streets of the old terraced cottages.
Recommended - well worth a visit!

I brought a group from the USA to Belper for a private walking tour of historic Belper and the North Mill. The people from the Mill could not have been more warm, welcoming, organised, professional, friendly, fun and informative. We had a fabulous couple of hours learning about the mill system, life in Belper at the height of the industrial revolution, the Strutts and Samuel Slater (of particular interest to the group). This was recalled as a highlight by many in the group of a two-week tour starting in Edinburgh and finishing in London, which is quite the complement given some of the other wonderful places we visited. Thank you!

I had the pleasure of visiting Belper in November which was on our British Landscapes Tour itinerary arranged by the Rhode Island(USA) Historical Society. Our common connection back in the late 1700s is Samuel Slater who apprenticed in Belper's mills and who used the technology he memorized to come to America to build his own mill in Pawtucket, RI, launching the American Industrial Revolution. The town's leaders were very receptive to our visit and arranged for personalized tours of the mills and surroundings and of the old mill village, which was very educational. Our guide, Christine, was charming and knowledgeable and most willing to answer questions. I would highly recommend this as place to visit--be sure to visit the Visitors Center where some local ladies were spinning yarn and weaving textiles. And lunch at the River Garden Restaurant was delicious!

Deligthful! The guides were enthusiastic and well versed on the history of this pioneering industrial complex and it'll brilliant founders.
I visited with a group from Rhode Island, birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, powered by ideas 'borrowed' by Samuel Slater from the Strutt's in Belper.
Highly recommend for all ages.

We visited with a group of history lovers from Rhode Island and could not have asked for a lovelier or more informative experience. The guides were knowledgeable and welcoming, offering a detailed history of Belper with a focus on its industrial history that was engaging for novices and experts alike. The experience was a definite highlight of our 10-day trip, with many guests citing it as their favorite day. Would highly recommend!

Visited with a tour group from Pawtucket, RI USA (the site of the American Industrial Revolution thanks to Samuel Slater of Belper, England), I found it very interesting to see the origins of our own mill town and all the similarities that were brought across the pond. The volunteer guides were wonderful and enthusiastic and provided historical photos as we went along. Highlights for me included seeing the basement supports and structure of the mill, the walking tour through the mill village neighborhood, and hearing about how the workers lived. We also got to see fiber spinning and there was a timeline that followed a few Belper families that I took photos of so I could read everything later. I enjoyed learning the history that connects to my own hometown.

Attended on a tour with the Rhode Island (USA) Historical Society. The guides were so knowledgeable and accommodating of our specific interests in the development of mills and mill life and history of Samuel Slater. They really went the extra mile for our group with our wonderful tour and demonstrations of spinning wool.

Our Probus Club visit to Strutts North Mill was an excellent one and a half hours tour. Our guide Jane and her team of Linda and Phil gave us a superb insight into the brilliant engineering minds of the Strutts and Arkwrights and their textile mills. A great place to visit.

We’d meant to do the mill tour since moving here and eventually got round to it.
The guides were really informative - it was a fascinating tour taking in the history of the mill. I was fascinated by the conditions for the workers and communities created for them.
Highly recommend this tour.
