Catawba Falls was closed in 2022 and reopened in 2024 with new trails and stairs. I've been visiting for years and wasn't excited about the new stairs and trails, but wanted to check it out since reopening. The main trail to the lower waterfalls is basically the same as the old trail with new bridges to avoid rock-hopping. I think there was a landslide so it is no longer possible to get to the bottom of Lower Catawba Falls, the one that is below the old dam. You can still see it from the trail. Shortly past here, is the main Catawba Falls. It is still possible to get photos without the stairs in them and they are not as much of an eyesore as I expected. Climbing up the steps, there are several landings to get a view of the upper portions of the waterfall. After climbing the steps, it's mostly level the rest of the way to Upper Catawba Falls. The new viewing deck actually provides pretty nice views. From here, you can backtrack or take the Ridge Trail back to the parking. Overall, I think the forest service did a nice job with the new trails and stairs. It's still so crowded, even in the rain, I would avoid on weekends if possible.

Imterdimate level trails take you to two impressive waterfalls. The direct trail to the lower falls turns into a boardwalk and Getting to lower falls is pretty easy and pet friendly but the treck up to the upper falls adds a lot steps and a tower. It's doable but expect to be taking some breaks along the way unless you are in really good shape. It is worth it though the upper falls are more impressive in my opinion. If you are planning on doing the full loop I'd recommend starting on the ridge trail. It's steep in places but a more gradual ascent. If the leaves are off the trees you get some great views along this trail too. It will take you directly to the upper falls and then you can descend down all those steps and the tower to the lower falls and back out vs climbing them. There is a big parking area at the trail head but it will fill up on weekends and holidays so plan ahead and think about arriving early. There is no street or road 🅿️ nearby and all the land around the trailhead is privately owned so no parking allowed.

Both Upper and Lower Falls are now open (reopened May 31, 2024). 2 primary choices, taking the loop which is about 3.6 miles total or out and back the River Trail which is about 2.6 miles round trip. The River Trail no longer follows close to the creek as is the past and has been made into more of a full lane gravel road as the Park system had to make changes to improve the safety of the trail to the Upper Falls. (Many serious injuries and a few fatalities over the years necessitated these changes-remember the rope you had to use to get to the Upper Falls in years past?-and they’ve really done a great job in doing it). They’ve now replaced that dangerous route with a series of 530 steps and a 40 foot steel tower that was an ingenious idea to traverse the steep route. Some purists have found fault with all the work required to make this safer for everyone but it still preserves the falls themselves and allows many more people to now make it to the Upper Falls. It’s still not for the faint of heart or those scared of heights but well worth it. I would not recommend going to the upper falls when it is wet however. Great job NPS!!!!

Hike on rocks for miles and walk up 530 steps to the top of the fall. It’s a great workout and worth the aches and pains, even in the rain! Recommend to wear hiking boots as the mud can be slippery when wet! Sa people slipping and falling who wore athletic shoes.

The hike in was not bad at all. I was surprised how many people were there, but even with company it was simply beautiful. 10/10 recommend.

This adventure had me questioning myself, should I stop or continue to the top? This is something you might ask yourself multiple times - the answer was yes! So grateful I was able to dig deep and make it to the top waterfall. The water was absolutely refreshing and cold, perfect to reset my core! Just letting the water rush over you, unbelievable!

Do yourself a favor, make this a stop on your travels in Asheville!

We went on a Monday afternoon, and it was not crowded. We were eager to observe the changes made to the popular trail. The first change you notice is the wide, gravel trail. The loose gravel was noisy and not pleasant to walk on (hope gravel is temporary). The trail to the falls is actually not finished and requires a somewhat steep and slippery detour about 2/3rds of the way. When you get to the falls you see a massive staircase with signs indicating that the stairs to the upper falls are the equivalent of climbing a 30-story building. Be warned! We did take the stairs and thought the views were nice. The stairs are very strenuous so probably won't do them again. The upper falls are pretty, but the area is still under construction with equipment and some unsightly trash around. We didn't realize that the whole project was not completed. We used to hike here frequently, but we find the recent changes unappealing for regular hikes. We simply prefer a more natural setting.

The river trail is an accessible, road width, gravel trail that can accommodate a lot of hikers. The stairs at the falls do make the climb safer in a lot of ways, but they are steep and there are 500+ to the top. There are benches for a rest and access points to some good holes to splash in. Good for a group. Our party of three hiked up and back on the river trail to the falls with two dogs. Definitely bring your dog’s leash and be prepared to meet many fellow two and four footed hikers.

I have been going to this place for years sometimes on a daily basis.
The top of the falls before they added all of these stairs and closed it for two years was difficult, dangerous but absolutely worth it. Now it’s like Disney world . It’s not special anymore .
