Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha(pass Fortainhas) & cross over mountain to Boca de Ambas as Ribeiras

I slept in Ponta do Sol at Sissi’s B&B for 1800CVE with good wifi and nice breakfast- you can reach her on WhatsApp 9965089 or on booking.com. The cliff walk to Cruzinha is amazing and took me less than 4 hours- I started at 9:15. However I cut left about 1 kilometer before Cruzinha to continue on the Celado do Mocho Trail. This takes you over the mountain to Boca de Ambas as Ribeiras and a main road heading to Ribeira Grande. On the way up the mountain I stopped at Joanna’s Restaurant which you can find on maps.me and had a very nice meal for 350CVE(omelette with rice and vegetables- full plate). I did have to wait about 45 minutes for the food. I got over the pass and to the road on the other side at around 16:00 and started walking but after about 15 minutes got lucky with an aluguer for 100CVE to Ribeira Grande. I was prepared to walk as I did not know if transport would still be passing.

wunderschöne Landschaft

Fontainhas liegt wunderbar eingebettet im Hang. Es gibt nach der langen Wanderung eine wunderbare Saftbar mit frischen Säften. Der Ort bietet auf dem Weg hin und zurück jeweils immer wieder schöne Perspektiven.

To piękne miejsce jak cała reszta wyspy Santo Antao. Cała wyspa warta zobaczenia najlepiej z lokalnym przewodnikiem

30 Minuten Autofahrt oder 2 Stunde Strassenwanderung und man ist in einer Schlucht mit Terrassenanbau, fühlt sich am Ende der Welt und kann dann eine vierstündige Wanderung an der Nordküste in Angriff nehmen.

Recommended to start at Cruzinha

Fontainhas is a beautiful place and well worth the walk from Ponta do Sol, but if you are capable of hiking the 15km between Cruzinha and Ponta do Sol, do it! Take a taxi or aluguer to Cruzinha (~2000 escudos, maybe less if you haggle) and walk back to Ponta. Together with the Paul Valley, it is the most beautiful hike we have ever done.

Sur le chemin de Ponta do sol à Cruzihna da garca

En faisant le chemin côtier allant de Ponta do sol à Cruzihna da garca vous passez obligatoirement par ce somptueux village, façades très colorées sur des pitons rocheux. Il est recommandé d'avoir de bonnes chaussures et une bonne condition physique (+1100, -1100 m de dénivelé). Mais chemin somptueux entre montagne et mer. Possibilité de manger dans un petit restaurant avec vue sur la mer à la moitié du parcours environ, magique. On peut apercevoir avec de la chance quelques tortues à proximité de la côte. Sentier très bien indiqué, guide non obligatoire.

Very picturesque village

The best way to reach this village is along the footpath which straddles the coast from Porto do Sol. It is around a one hour walk on a path which is in good condition. Along the way there are spectacular coastal views. On reaching the highest point on the walk before the descent into the village, there are great views of Fontainhas with its pretty pastel coloured buildings seemingly clinging to the side of the Ribeira. Walking into the village there are a couple of places offering refreshments.

Beyond here there are two more small villages, the first is Corvoa, followed by the prettier Formiguinhas, which took around 90 minutes walk from Fontainhas. The walk clings to the coast with its wild and windy views. From here we turned back to Ponto Do Sol although it is possible to continue the walk for another 2 hours to Cruzinha and get an aluger back to Ponto Do Sol. An alternative is to get transport to Cruzinha and walk back the other way.

It is also possible to visit Fontainhas by car for those not wishing to walk.

A dizzying narrow road to Fontainhas with incredible views

this is a village on the gorgeous island of Santo Antao on the edge of a cliff that is hundreds of meters deep. Literally. The road to get there is almost insanely narrow and one can't help but wonder what happens if a car comes from the other direction. There a virtually no turn outs.
But the amazing scenic and sea views make this entire - sometimes heart stopping - experience worth it. Terraced gardens, colorful buildings. The 'big' yellow building is a school, however, there are no kids here and it's closed.
The village is 2km SW of Ponta do Sol and also a popular walking route.
