We visited the Gage House Museum today with a group. The place is a real local gem full of rich hertory as important today as it was in the 1800's. Matilda Joselyn Gage is a pioneering women's rights and religious rights advocate that is being rediscovered. There is even information about her connection to The Wizard of Oz author Frank Baum, her son-in-law.
The museum is a delight not only for adults, but for children who can share in the herstory through interactive displays and activities.
You are free to wander through the several themed rooms and actually touch many display items.
Truly a treasure of the herstory space for Central New York. There is an entry fee, a gift shop and restrooms. Parking is free and on the neighborhood streets. Enter on the Walnut Street side.
Both Gage and her husband are buried in a nearby cemetery that is an easy drive from the museum. It makes an excellent added destination.

I had heard of Matilda Gage previously, as I've read the biography of L. Frank Baum. However, I wasn't aware how much she contributed to the women's right movement--and how Susan B. Anthony effectively cloaked her from history. These are just a few things you'll learn at your visit. We found a brochure for this at the Women's Rights National Park site, but more signage is needed--we passed it up a few times. It can be tricky to know where to turn into the appropriate side street, as you're coming off a well traveled main road. If this happens to you be persistent! Unfortunately this site is only open limited times, so check before you attempt. There's no parking area, so we just parked on the same side of the house. We were the only ones visiting at this time, so we got a wealth of information. I feel if another video presentation could be done about Matilda's accomplishments, including passages of her writings, it could be very helpful as she's a name that will be unfamiliar to many. We didn't have a tour per se, we just wandered around, asking questions when needed. There's no fee, but donations are accepted. Very interesting was the small gift shop; to highlight the differences in m/f salaries, the goods are priced higher for the men. Hopefully you'll leave wanting to know far more about this fascinating personality.

This historic house has five rooms---each with a different theme representing MJ Gage's contributions to Abolition, Women's Suffrage, and Freedom of Religion (Onondaga relations) and one room devoted to her nephew Frank Baum who wrote the Wizard of Oz. The video made by friends and relatives of Matilda Joslyn Gage is important, especially for many who may not realize she was the unseen force along with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in early fights for women's rights.

For me this was an exciting field trip, a celebration of a historical figure important to the pursuit of equality, a freethinker, and an influence on modern Goddess-worship.

A small museum that has been restored to being quite a showplace for local history in the woman's sufferage movement

My daughters and I loved our time at this museum! The attractive exhibits drew our attention to learn about Gage's life, her fight for women's rights, helping slaves escape, the interesting Haudenosaunee Indians and all about The Wizard of Oz. My daughters got to try on period clothes, write on many walls, stand in a secret passage behind a bookshelf and try on Dorothy's glitter red shoes from the Wizard of Oz. Sue, the tour guide was warm and very informative. My favorite was learning more about the Haudenosaunee and how they treated their women with equality. Amazing! Sue was wonderful to talk with and learn many more interesting facts. She was very knowledgeable on the topics presented at the Gage Center. It is a very kid friendly museum, even young ones with a coloring nook. Afterwards we visited the gravesite of Matilda.

What an amazing and inspiring place! Matilda Joslyn Gage has given us timeless words, and I am so thankful that her legacy is continued with the Center. Whether your passions lie with the struggles for gender equality, religious freedom, an end to human bondage, or rights for Native people, Gage's work and words will reinvigorate you.

The Gage center is one of those museum experiences that touches on several areas. Matilda Gage was a leader in the women's suffrage movement, she offered up her home as a stop on the underground railroad, and she was L. Frank Baum's mother in law. In fact, Baum was married to Maud Gage in this home.
This is a place to visit to get a real piece of Americana history and reflect on the late 1800's and what it was like to be in America at that time.
I strongly recommend a visit here when you are in Central New York.
