We got off at the Fort at the horse buggy tour. Had lunch on the terrace cafe. So fun and good. I highly recommend. Lunch with a view was one of my favorite things of the trip. I also love history and enjoyed walking around the buildings. Ect. My son was worried the cannon would be loud. But, it wasn’t.

Visitors from UK were wanting to vist Mackinac Island, which MUST include a trip to the fort to appreciate the history of the area. I have been countless times. Purchase tickets on line to save 50 cents a ticket? Your choice. In any case, the "soldiers" here, after the summer Boy Scout troops have left to return to school, are generally young adult males who have a keen interest in history, and at this time of year with lessened crowds, have the time to share what they have learned. Since the Grand has run the tea room at the fort, I've always stopped there for lunch, as the view can't be beaten. This time 3 of us shared the charcuterie board and had drinks. Alas, the Grand Island Fudge Ball (ice cream ball rolled in pecans, then topped with hot fudge) is no longer on the menu so we were "forced" to try other desserts, which were very enjoyable. The fort has a good array of buildings, exhibits which appeal and entertain all age groups. It had been 5 years since my last visit, due to COVID, but enjoyed the walk up, seeing refurbished and new displays, and sharing Michigan history related to the Brits with UK family.

We enjoyed the fort. The "soldiers" were very informative and fun. We watch the cannon firing. The views from up that high are magnificent.

The most amazing view of the Island. You can see the corner of the Grand Hotel and the bridge from one side all the way past St. Anne’s Church to the other side!

The Fort was a highlight of our time on the Island. Many buildings with interesting exhibits and videos. Beautiful views of the harbor, lighthouses and beyond. Cannon firing was neat.
You can grab a drink or a sandwich on the porch and enjoy the view.
We came to understand the need for a fort because of the strategic location of the Island. We did not know about the battles with the British during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Both times the Brits captured the Fort.
The Fort is about two hours and worth the time. Great history lesson!

After visiting Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, we enjoyed visiting the later fort on Mackinac Island. The costumed interpreters told the history of the fort in special sessions on the grounds; they also fired a period rifle and a canon. We spent 3 hours in multiple buildings viewing the exhibits. Even with an occasional light rain, the morning was pleasant. We saved a few dollars on admission with the veteran discount (ID proof required). We made sure to keep our receipt since it also entitled us to visit the Biddle House and Blacksmith Shop and the Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum.

One of the best forts I’ve ever been to. If you like history you will love this place. The site manages to cover just about every aspect of both military and late 19th century life in one spot. On top of that it is located in a prime spot offering amazing views.

We spent about 2.5 hrs here and enjoyed canons firing, rifle demonstrations and other talks about life in the fort. The young employees were very enthusiastic about their discussions. Lots of exhibits to also explore. A fun morning or afternoon!

One of the more interactive and well preserved forts I've visited. Plenty to browse, beautiful views of the town below, and lots of live demos and short tours aavailable. Nice way to spend a morning or afternoon while on Mackinac Island.

Are there any hotel to stay at on June 8 2019?
DanielPofMI
Williamston, MI2.205 bijdragen
Possibly, you'll have to look thru the hotel listings to see availability. It is a popular time of year to visit, so book early. It generally costs a lot more to stay on the island. You can save some money by staying in Mackinaw City.

Best deal going for a family is the Heritage pass. $85 gets your entire family into every historical sight in the area both on the island and in the city.

Hello,
Mackinac Island is serviced by two ferry companies - Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry and Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry. I would recommend heading to the website of either company for more information.
Thank you!

Are the Fort grounds small dog friendly?
Mackinac State H
Mackinac Island, MI2 bijdragen
Hello,
Fort Mackinac is definitely pet friendly. We just ask that pets are kept on a leash, and that pet owners are aware that Fort Mackinac has loud sounds (cannon and rifle firings) that can frighten some animals.
Thank you!

Is there a cost for the fort or the natl park
ohiohockeyguy
ohiohockeyguy82 bijdragen
Yes, there is an admission fee. You can find more info on their Web site.
If you plan to visit multiple sites, you may benefit from buying the Mackinac Family Heritage Pass. It's $85, but it gets 2 adults and all dependent children and grandchildren in to 5 different sites including the forts on Mackinac Island and Mackinaw city, as well as the lighthouse on Mackinaw Island.

We plan to take the carriage tour and visit the fort. After getting off the carriage, how many stairs to the fort? Also, touring the fort, is this a moderate or more extreme activity. Some in our group have issues with climbing stairs.
Mackinac State H
Mackinac Island, MI2 bijdragen
Thank you for your question. There are no stairs upon arrival at Fort Mackinac from the Avenue of Flags entrance (where you'll arrive from the Carriage Tour). There is an elevator available at the Soldier's Barracks upon arrival. Touring Fort Mackinac is a more moderate activity, but there are a couple of access issues due to the historic nature of the site.
Here are some of the access issues at our site:
Access may be limited for some visitors with mobility impairments in these buildings:
The Officers’ Hill Quarters (11) has narrow hallways, thresholds and stairs to the second floor.
Two entrance steps lead to the Guardhouse (17).
Difficult Access Locations
Five to eight entrance steps to these buildings may make access difficult for visitors with
mobility impairments:
Post Bathhouse (4)
North Blockhouse (10) Alternate programs provided
Schoolhouse (9)
Tea Room (15) Alternate service area provided
East Blockhouse (20)
Upper Gun Platform (19) Alternate programs provided
Alternate Building Entrances
Enter the Post Headquarters (2) through the Quartermaster’s Storehouse (3).
Enter the Officers’ Stone Quarters (14) through the back porch of the building.
Alternate Programs
Accessible service for the Tea Room (15) is available on the covered piazza at the rear of the Officers’ Stone Quarters (14).
The cannon demonstration, located up a flight of stairs on the Gun Platform (19), is shown live on a television monitor at the Water Well (21). All other scheduled programs are held in accessible areas.
A video program is available west of the North Blockhouse (10) exhibit.
I hope this answers your question, and we look forward to your visit!

Is this Fort accessible to visitors year round? Is the Fort open seven days a / week? Hours?
Is it elevator accessible ? Or walking only? How long is the average walk up the slope? Thanks!
Mackinac State H
Mackinac Island, MI2 bijdragen
Fort Mackinac is typically open from early May until late October. For 2018, we opened on May 3 and will close our doors on October 28. We are open seven days a week during our operating season. Fort Mackinac has two entrances, both of which require heading up a steep hill. The entrance in front is not recommended for guests with mobility issues or guests in wheelchairs, as it has 27 steps at the top. The north entrance is accessible to the taxi service. The walk from downtown to the south entrance of the fort takes 5-10 minutes.
Thank you!
