Such an informative spot - a recreation of the spot where the first Pilgrims traded with the native Wampanoags and the Dutch. Much to see here in the various buildings, much to learn, but not ever overwhelming! Beautiful location directly on the Cape Cod Canal. The docents are excellent and are passionate about the history they share with you. Lots of demonstrations of crafts, many hands on things to do. Highly recommend!

Definitely take advantage of the informative docents at each site.

We certainly learnd a lot at the trading post. Wonderful, knowledgeable docent offered a detailed explainaton of the history from the time of the English settlers arrival to the present. She was able to answer diverse questions from our party regarding the original settelrs and how they came to own the land and business, trading (local and northeast regional), the original housing and construction methods and the replica stucture, the relationship of the settlers with the Native American people, the numerous archeological excavation projects over time, and the native plant garden. We were interested in the docent's expertise, continued our discussion, and our tour at this trading post lasted almost an hour.

The hand carved carousel at the front of the property was manned (actually being man-power bike pedaled) by the artist. Fun!

And a docent at the small railroad depot provided the history about train transportation to the area and when this region was the summer get-away for the White House,

Visiting the Cape. Wanted to see the museum, and lucky for us it was Strawberry Festival Day. Admission for this day was free due to this event, so was a real treat. The Trading post was interesting with a great docent who was very informative of the history and shared her knowledge in a fun way. The train station from the Grover Cleveland days was interesting again with a great docent.
The man powered carousel was fun to see. The horses were carved by the artist on sight, then the carousel is powered by a person pedaling what looked like an old exercise bike. Very interesting.
BUT, this day was the Strawberry Day. Had great strawberry shortcake: a nice biscuit with plentiful strawberries and whip cream....rainy, dreary day, but strawberries make everyone's day happy!!
Big plus...this museum is on the canal and near the railroad bridge is a short stroll away on the paved bike path. Great way to see the canal and bridge. Very enjoyable.

The Trading Post is the Central Attraction, but the Site includes other impressive points of interest. In the early 17th century, Plymouth Colony was trying to establish a trading route that would enable increased bartering with local Indians & possibly Dutch traders, depending on the success of their search for a favorable location to build a trading post. In 1627, the Plymouth colonists identified a location about 20 miles from the colony situated on the Manomet River on upper Cape Cod. The trading post was founded @ that site, & would enable reciprocal trade with the Wampanoag Indians, who provided corn & beans. Some of the colonist were also interested in establishing a fur trade agreement. The trading post was the first attempt to establish a functioning geographical extension of the Plymouth colony into the Cape Code area. Aptucxet was a Wampanoag word meaning “little trap in the river.” The current replica of the Aptucxet Trading Post is based on the architectural dimensions as calculated by the excavations of the actual extant foundation of the original site. The trading post consists of two large rooms with front & back fireplaces. Actual artifacts are used for interior object placement when possible, & replicas of artifacts that are known to have existed complete the interior decor. A good job of reconstructing the diverse lifestyles & cultures that essentially defined the early borders of our country. One other site @ this attraction is perhaps the most enjoyable experiences
of our tour through all of Cape Cod & Massachusetts: what appears to be the conversion of the old windmill into a small
indoor functional carousel, the horses beautifully hand-crafted, uniquely colorful, & “foot-pedaled!” The carousel is managed by a kindly gentleman who is also the craftsman who created the revolving team of horses. He explained that he was almost sure that the foot-pedaled carousel @ the Trading Post was probably the only one of a kind remaining in the world today! If you want to see how this carousel works, along with the beautiful horses, take a look @ my photos as submitted with this review.
My wife agreed to use the pedal-power just to see if it worked, & “Shazam,” it all worked gracefully & without a hitch! The Trading Post attraction is well worth your time & any donations.

A wonderful visit! Wendy, our enthusiastic guide, was incredibly knowledgable, both about the history, the tools and buildings, the culture and even the use of the various plants. She handled all types of personalities during our visit with skill and grace. My nomination for the best docent/guide that I have experienced in my 75 years visiting thousands of sites. Bravo, Wendy!!!

El museo es chico pero está muy bien mantenido y ambientado, muestra como los primeros colonos de Cape Cod vivían y comerciaban con los indios Wampanoag de la zona. La cuidadora nos relató algunos detalles y fue muy atenta.

This attraction would have the potential -for its antiquity, history and location- to shine.
Instead, when not hosting some fair or show, the place is remarkably dull, unadorned and poorly manned.
If I were a tourist, I would visit it while walking the Canal trail, but would not have it on my list of "must see" at the Cape.

small but excellent site. the building has been meticulously e
restored. Much information about the native Americans and the white settlers during the first 30-odd years of their co-existence, while they still had friendly relations and could conduct mutually beneficial trade which gave the native Americans linen, iron, glass, and much more, and the settlers furs, wampum beads, tobacco, and much more. Very good guiding.
