The park by Vernon Springs is small but very nice. It offers boat access and fishing. The South beach is pretty shallow and offers a good place for kids to swim. There is a dam that you do need to be aware of. The camp site is accross the road and hidden from traffic. The restroom facilities are pretty new and clean. If you like to bycycle, this is a great spot as the campground has access to a paved bike trail that goes for miles. The trail is often cross country and offers nice scenery. There is also a great nature center filled with animals and information about animals and the area. This is a great quiet camping place that is a not well known diamond which makes it easier to get a camping spot. Great place.

From the movie "Field of Dreams." We've been visiting Cresco, Iowa for several years now. We live in rural Minnesota--only 70 miles away. We like to come here and camp for long weekends--only because this little city is just so DARN NICE!

We camp at Howard County Park--just south of town. The facility is super nice--super clean, super friendly--just like the town. Rates are only $20 a night, with electric and water. There is a dump station. There are clean bathrooms and showers, and a playground for the kids.

At the entrance to the campground, there is a picnic area and playground--no charge. There is a very nice nature center--again, no charge. There are paved bike trails throughout--with signs telling about the plants and trees along the way. The trails connect into town. Bring your own bike--or just walk the trails.

Across the highway, there is a nice lake, suitable for swimming, boating, kayaks, and fishing. There is a manicured park, with bathrooms. A gently rippling series of ledges drops down into the Turkey River, below. The water is suitable for wading.

The town itself is what every Midwest town aspires to be--very clean, well-kept--with most municipal services. Population is only about 3500. The town spirit is perhaps exemplified by a series of bronze statues depicting young children just having fun. About 40 of them (with more added each year) dot the community. Kids are depicted reading, fishing, riding tricycles, playing with pets, swinging, or just "palling around". They bring a smile to my face every time I see them. The Chamber of Commerce building is located just south of the Municipal Park (they have maps of the statues). The park itself features links to Cresco history--old log cabin, a real railroad train on display--links to the 5 Navy Admirals that came from this small town.

Cresco is also located in Amish country, and a drive through the countryside will give you a chance to view working Amish farms--all work done without electricity or powered vehicles.

We enjoy it so much that we've become "advocates" for Cresco--inviting friends with campers to visit as well. Wouldn't it be nice if the entire country was this thoughtful, welcoming, clean, caring, and had such a quality of life? Give it a try--you'll feel good just visiting--and knowing a place like this exists.
