Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago was originally formed as a merger of two churches in 1871. Since 1914 it's been located on E Chestnut Street, and it faces N Michigan Avenue. The beautiful Gothic architecture of the church is unforgettable. It was designed by architects Shaw and Cram, and it looks magnificent, standing out in the surroundings of modern high-rises and skyscrapers.

The ornate interior and grand auditorium of the church, colorful glass windows, lovely courtyard with a fountain -- everything is very attractive and memorable.

Fourth Presbyterian Church has always played a significant role not only as a place of worship, but has been also an active participant in the socio-economic development of the city: it reached out to the poor in the nearby neighborhood, helped to create the Presbyterian Hospital in 1884, and has been organizing and promoting many important educational and cultural programs in the city.

The church was closed during the pandemic; it was such a pleasure to visit it again in September, and to see one of the Friday Noonday Concerts, organized by the church. It was a concert, with pianist and composer Amy Wurtz performing.

Beautiful sounds of music in this historic, magnificent church! ...

It was lovely to revisit 4th Pres, having attended regularly many years ago. The service was thought provoking and the congregation and greeters were welcoming.
The building is huge, and just the right side of "grand". It is after all a place of worship, no need for anything too ornate

Bonita iglesia de estilo neogótico con un agradable patio ajardinado. No pudimos acceder porque estaba cerrada.

This is the Presbyterian Church directly across from the Hancock tower. It is a pretty church but what gets it notice is its address on the Magnificent Mile.

Was on the bus tour when I decided to get off and walk along the Magnificent Mile. I saw the lovely architecture of the church and decided to cross the street to get a closer look. The church has been around since 1914 and has a lot of its original interior and exterior. And the architect of the church was Ralph Adams Cram, America’s leading Gothic revival architect. It is a pairing of English and French Gothic styles. Another architect designed the parish buildings surrounding an inner courtyard in a Tudor style - Howard Van Doren Shaw. There was a concert when I went in and it was lovely to sit in the pews and listen to the talented musicians. The carvings were exquisite as were the stained glass windows. The chandeliers hanging overhead cast a soft warm glow over the seats. They were not necessary at that time of day since the windows let in a good amount of light. It was nice to wander in the inner courtyard. A quiet space in the middle of the bustling city block.

Great place to sit, relax and reflect while shopping on the Mag Mile. Especially if the choir or organist is practicing. Beautiful, hidden gem.

Today I walked through the very modern, yet very inspiring Buchanan Chapel of historic Fourth Presbyterian Church. I highly recommend it for a few moments of quiet beauty and peace of mind, in a very contemporary atmosphere.

I first noticed the Fourth Presbyterian Church, when we first stayed at the Westin Hotel, on a previous trip. I could not help but notice it from the Westin Executive Lounge, as one can look down upon it, though many of the lounge’s windows. It is an imposing structure, and dominates a full city block, at the corner of N Michigan Ave and E Delaware Place, directly across from the John Hancock Building, at 875 N Michigan Ave. It was after coffee in that lounge, that I decided to re-visit this magnificent church.

I had done a self-guided tour, and was back to do another one, while my wife was in meetings near-by. I walked over to the church, and explored the chapel, and the courtyard, on a cool, damp March day.

Much of the church’s structure dates from the early 1900's (though the congregation goes back to the 1870's), in a Gothic Revival style, borrowing on some of the aesthetic aspects of older cathedrals, in Europe, such as Notre Dame, and the Cologne Cathedral. The Gothic Revival elements are everywhere, and quickly establish the visual theme of the building, and from all sides. The exterior deserves a complete walk-around, and will present itself in a different way, with the changing light. Besides the imposing main structure, and also fronting N Michigan Ave, there is a serene courtyard, attaching several administrative buildings. I spent some time in that lovely courtyard, and while those out-buildings are not as grand as the cathedral, itself, they are well-worth the time to study.

Again, the chapel was open for viewing, and I took this opportunity to photograph some of the interior, open to the public.

Besides its architectural beauty, it is a great place to just relax, and reflect, before heading back out to N Michigan Ave - the Magnificent Mile - for shopping, or more exploring. A gorgeous, and historic (second oldest building on Michigan Ave, after the Water Tower) building, well worth seeing, and spending time both admiring and touring. I probably spent 2 hours on this day, including the walk-around of the entire exterior.

Beautiful exterior and courtyard, and there was almost no one inside when we stopped in for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle on Michigan Ave. A lovely surprise to find in the middle of Michigan Ave.
