Not difficult to climb. A few temples scattered around. The best one is the Sasvekalu Ganesha. And the sunset view from Hemakuta hill is gorgeous, over the rolling landscape. Hampi authorities are kind enough to wait for the sunset to be over, before locking the gate to this complex though most other Hampi monument are locked by 6 pm

Kurz hinter dem Sasirekalu Ganesh Tempel beginnt der Tempelkomplex des Hemakuta Hügels. In diesem Tempelkomplex gibt es etwa 30 mittelgroße Tempel, viele aus der Frühzeit der Stadt Vijayanagara. Auch viele wichtige Inschriften sind hier. Viele heilige Pavillons und einige Zisternen finden sich hier. Man vermute, daß dieser Platz auch dazu diente, verschiedene Tempeltypen zu erproben. An einer Stelle finden sich Yoni und drei, ein anderes Mal Yoni und fünf Limgams in den Felsen eingetieft. Vom Hügel selbst hat man einen schönen Blick über die Stadt, auch Richtung Virupaksha Tempel und Hampi Bazar. Viele Affen tummeln sich hier.

It has two approaches, one from Ganesha idol's side (mustard ganesha: as called by locals) and the other approach is from near Virupaksha temple. I would recommend climbing from Ganesha's side and enjow the landscape and then, walk down towards Virupaksha temple side.

It's very close to Virupaksha temple. Very scenic site. You can click best pictures of Hampi from here. Major attractions like sasivekalu ganesha, kadalekalu ganesha, shrikrishna temple and laxminarasimha are all at walkable distance from it .

Hemkuta hill is the place were Lord Shiva was meditating and kamdeva tried to break his samadhi. Place of great historical importance for hindus. The temple complex has a shiva temple, ganesha temple and jain temples. However, worship is not conducted in any of these temples currently.
From the hill, you can get the best view of Virupaksha temple. Also it is one of the best places for sunrise or sunset view in Hampi. The climb is not steep and can also be done by elderly people. Must visit.

The Hemakuta Hill offers panoramic view of the surroundings. Most importantly, this also offers the best view of the Virupaksha temple, making it a quintessential photo stop. The hill is also dotted with many quaint temple ruins worthy of further exploration. There is also a sunset point so you may want to check it out during late afternoon.

This is a must visit place at the sunset. You will see a lot of people gathering during the sunset hours. It gives wonderful view of golden light falling on the Hampi ruins.

Leading up from the Sasivekalu Ganesha mandir are steps cut into the large granite boulders and once you climb them, you are on top of the Hemakuta Hill.
Many temples dedicated to Lord Shiva rest atop this hill and many climb it in evening to take in the beautiful sunset. Hence it is also called Sunset Point.
From here you can get stunning views of the Balakrishna temple on one side but the main view is of the majestic Virupaksha temple complex on the banks of the mighty Tungabhadra, which can be seen flowing along its meandering course.
It is possible to climb down the hill via steps directly to reach the main entrance of the Virupaksha temple or you can return to the car park and drive down to the car park.
