There are plenty of Dartmoor walks that will take you past one of these leats which were built to provide water for Plymouth and the neighbouring town of Devonport. If you walk from Yelverton to Clearbrook along the cycle track the leats are on either side of you. Go to the Tavistock Ramblers web site and download the Yelverton to Clearbrook walk and it will tell you all about them.

It is a great walk through spectacular scenery right back to the source beyond Wistman's Wood. Lots of features revealing much history of the moor and life back when. Still flowing for the first stage providing some real action as you walk beside it.

Anther spot on the edge of the moor not to be missed. Plenty of free parking around the lake. But you must be prepared to getmout of your car and walk

We decided to do the Burrator/ Raddick hill/ Crazywell pool walk from Burrator reservoir. Through the forest, the leat is very peaceful and quite safe. We met some horses on the way. There are numerous clapper bridges over the leat. the path along the bank of the leat is a bit muddy and slippy in places. Dogs can be let off and is peaceful with the odd cyclist. Leaving the forest, we cross the interesting aqueduct which, be careful is slippery and awkward getting over the bars, is quite a drop down to the unsafe, fast flowing River Meavy. Medium to large dogs however, can not cross. Just looking up at the amazing Raddick hill falls is beautiful. It is fast flowing but pretty. Climbing up over the Rocks up the waterfall is quite magnificent with views turning round. Note that the rocks are quite large and slippery. Continuing, along the lest more clapper bridges cross the leat. Again, we saw more horses by the water. The leat gets quieter. We finally cross the clapper bridge to Crazywell pool to Burrator. This is a great walk/ quiet location suitable and fun for dogs and hikers.

Following this leat for all or part of it's length will take you to some very interesting places. We have a young daughter and because it follows the contours of the Moor, it's a nice walk for her to do. It affords some great views of the Moor so is good for photographers. There are lots of interesting places to visit if you deviate only slightly from the course of the leat, such as Whiteworks and Fox Tor Mires.

Came across this on a walk, a stunning piece of work by those old Victorians. Able to walk along a good part of its route.

The Devonport Leat is one of eight historic, man-made water courses left on Dartmoor, each built to transport rainwater to a specific destination. Rainfall on the Moor is much higher than in the towns below and the Moor has been sparsely populated for thousands of years.

The Devonport Leat came almost 200 years after Drake's Leat, but was nearly 10 miles longer, drawing its water from high up on the moor, from young rivers such as the West Dart. It was built at the end of the eighteenth century to provide the rapidly expanding dockland area of Plymouth with water. Originally 28 miles long, and a feat of engineering skill, it now terminates abruptly in a spectacular waterfall at Burrator Reservoir.

I came across this leat on moorland between Princetown and the reservoir and discovered a modest aqueduct where it crosses the young river Meavy. The channel is narrow and there are flat stones jutting out from both banks in some places, known as 'sheep leaps'. If a sheep falls into this channel, its fleece becomes waterlogged and it is too heavy to jump out.The sides of the Leat are lined with specially cut granite slabs. Even though the gradients are steep on the southern edge of the Moor, the Leat was carefully designed to descend very gradually. The waterfall at the reservoir must have been caused later when the dam was built and the Leat disrupted.

We enjoyed a peaceful and fascinating walk following this water course, watching small fish dart between clumps of weed of various kinds. Below the open moorland it flows gently through mixed woodland towards the reservoir.

You can park at Princetown or travel there by bus and walk along the road towards Two Bridges where, just before you reach the Blackbrook Bridge, you will find the Leat passing under the road. From here you can follow it down for about five miles.. On an Ordnance Survey map of Dartmoor all the Leat's features, such as the aqueducts and tunnel, are marked.
