I enjoyed how undeveloped this attraction is. The hike down was a little slippery in spots but they provide walking sticks and I suggest you use them.
The drive in was epic. Beautiful views of farms, mountains, and jungle. And the look on my wife’s face as we crossed a couple of “sketchy” bridges was hilarious.
Water was refreshing with a few great swim holes.
We prepaid for lunch at the admission. Only 19,000 colones for two casados and two entry fees.
We have a small suv but you could get there with a car and picking your line around some larger stones and Ruts.
A half day well spent.

This is a truly off the beaten path waterfall. The gravel road is difficult to navigate, full of steep hills, mud pits, large rocks, and potholes, but can be manages by a 4x4 vehicle OR by a really good driver in a sedan. To get there, follow the signs on the road and not your GPS. If using GPS, use Waze because Google maps will take you the wrong way. The property is family-owned and very well maintained. The family takes great care of its guests , from cooking delicious food to providing a safety briefing at the falls and watching to make sure no one gets hurt while climbing the slippery rocks. You pay the entrance fee at the office next to the parking lot, and you also pre-order food here from the restaurant at the bottom of the falls, if you want to eat at the restaurant (it's very good, you should!). Like all trails in Costa Rica, the path up and down can be slippery during the rainy season so wear good shoes.

This was definitely off the beaten path. In fact we thought we were lost when he had to drive over the one lane suspension bridge but it was incredible. Very friendly staff and we even had lunch there. The photos are what we saw the day after a rainstorm.

Our family (kids aged 13 and 15) spent a few hours at Eco Chontales in mid-March 2022. As others have mentioned, the road in is rough (with a few slightly scary bridges) but I think this helps to keep visitor numbers down! We would recommend a 4x4 for the road. We chose these falls over Nauyaca as we were worried about the crowds and were looking for something a little more laid back. We chose right! Once we arrived, our family were the only visitors there! We had the falls to ourselves for most of the morning until another group arrived near noon. We didn't have time for lunch, but the little restaurant at the foot of the falls looked very nice and is supposed to have excellent food (which you purchase at the top when you buy your entry pass). The falls themselves are very high- and although it was the dry season- were still flowing powerfully. (I imagine they would be even more stunning in the wet season). There were a few nice swimming holes, and some good spots for jumping off rocks. You can walk further down, where there is a great spot to cliff-jump into the canyon. It looked a bit too intimidating for our crew! The two Scarlett Macaws at the top were the icing on the cake. Overall, a great day- and highly recommended.

Our extended family group included three boys aged 9-11, their parents, and their grandparents (very vital for 80+). Everyone enjoyed this excursion. Plan to eat lunch there.
There is a sign on the paved road up the mountain from Dominical, and more signs at every turn on the dirt road heading to the waterfall. Don't give up--there will be another sign! Along the way, you'll enjoy beautiful lush green pastures and cute little villages.
You'll cross a one-land suspension bridge. FOLD YOUR SIDE VIEW MIRRORS IN. Don't be alarmed that the steel plates on which you drive move--that's how suspension bridges work. There's also a much shorter concrete slab bridge with no railings that was a little sketchy.
But keep going! Once you get to Eco Chontales, there's a dirt parking lot and a little store/office. I think you can arrange for a horseback ride down to the waterfall, but we hadn't known that and weren't prepared to do that. We paid a small entrance fee for each person (I think it was about $5 US per person, which is well worth it), and if you want to have lunch at the restaurant at the bottom of the waterfall, you order and pay at the office before walking down. I do believe they took credit cards.
Order lunch. Our typical Costa Rican casados were delicious (get the fish or chicken), but some in our party were disappointed with their burger (Costa Rican beef is tougher than we're used to in the US) and nachos. But why would you come to Costa Rica to eat North American food? Anyway, lunch was not expensive, and it's much tastier and easier than hauling your own picnic down the hill, which I think you are allowed to do.
Near the parking lot are simple but clean changing rooms and bathrooms. There are also some stunning scarlet macaws that seem to be semi-tamed (but still free to fly where they want to). In the distance, at the right time of day, you can hear howler monkeys (monos congos) in the canopy.
After you walk across this little field, there is a dirt path heading down. There is also a little covered signboard and a barrel containing wooden hiking poles. Grab one. The path can be muddy/slippery and steep in some places. There is one steep section in which they have made steps out of old tires filled with dirt to anchor them in place. Very clever and helpful. Other parts of the path were difficult for our seniors, but with help from the others, we got them both down intact.
Closer to the bottom (and the waterfall), the paths have been maintained with gravel and concrete in some places. There are some photo overlook pads and various paths to the main tall waterfall you see in all the pictures.
The main path heads toward a large open air pavilion with tables and chairs and a small kitchen where they prepare the lunches you ordered.
Nearby is a large flat rocky area where you can take your shoes off, hang your backpack up on a hook on a railing, and go dip your feet or more in the water. A lifeguard/security guard is on station. He helped grab Nana when she slipped on the rocks, and makes sure nobody takes your stuff while you're swimming in the pools or climbing around the rocks.
The main falls are impressive and majestic, but there are smaller sections that are fun to explore, with little pools and falls.
There's a good chance you'll want to swim. The water's nice and cool and clean. So take a towel to make sure you can enjoy it.
Even if you don't swim, you're surrounded by natural beauty. Not just the falls, but the valley all around you.

Where can we find a horseback riding tour to the falls? Wanted to ride through the mountains a little before exploring the falls and can't find much information about the horses. Thanks!

Sorry, I just saw this. No, you don't need a guide. I would guess it must be at least an hour from Quepos.
