We had a great experience at WAK Japan! Loved wearing a traditional kimono and taking part in the tea ceremony. It was really interesting to learn about each step of the ceremony and the history behind it. Our host was so kind and welcoming. Highly recommend!

Prior to arriving at the class, we were escorted through a huge market full of shops selling fish, meats, produce, clothing, souvenirs and everything else imaginable. Big plus - the food stores had more samples than Costco. It was a wonderful experience and far less crowded than those in Tokyo.
The class itself is given in a beautiful 100-plus year old space that was formerly the shop and home of a merchant. It is run by the Women Association of Kyoto, an organization that promotes traditional Japanese arts by offering classes in cooking, tea ceremonies, calligraphy, origami and flower arranging - and they now even have some male members!
Our host was Mieko, who was lovely - warm, friendly, very good at her job, and excellent English. We learned how to make sushi, miso soup and a spinach sesame seed salad. The food was delicious, the process was fun for all of us, and we were given a recipe book to take home.
My only regret is that I didn’t know about WAC sooner, as I would have taken advantage of their other classes as well. Unfortunately, we are at the end of our stay in Kyoto. Our experience with Mieko far exceeded our expectations and we all left her full and happy!

We had such a great experience doing a tea ceremony here. Our host was lovely and welcoming. She taught us about the ceremony and each of us had to the chance to make the tea and serve it ourselves. Absolutely recommend this place!

We went to learn about the tea ceremony. First we had the opportunity to dress in kimono. I enjoyed learning about the different pieces that go towards making the whole look. Then our teacher, Tomo, took us through the tea ceremony from how the matcha tea is brewed to how the cups are held when passing them and holding them. It was a very calming and reflective experience and our teacher was very thoughtful in answering questions about how the Tea Ceremony lives on today and the role of all these practices in Japanese culture.

Amazing experience, highly recommend!
Five of us ranging from teenagers to a pensioner thoroughly enjoyed our tea ceremony, which included wearing a kimono and making origami.

We also did the sushi making, which included a trip to the market to buy some of the ingredients. All of us are vegetarian and they took this into consideration, so not to include any fish in the sauce, etc. We made miso soup, two different types of sushi and some Japanese spinach. After making it we were lead to a different room to enjoy our delicious creations as well as matcha tea and ice cream for dessert.

The ladies of WAK are so lovely and friendly. We were made to feel very welcome. I would recommend WAK to anyone wishing to have an authentic Japanese experience.

Our private session was expertly run by our hostess, who supervised ensuring we were properly tied into our kimonos; it’s very complex! The history is fascinating, and the nuance of the movements during the tea ceremony reveals why it takes years to master. The time flies by, and despite my miserable attempts at origami later, this was a thoroughly worthwhile and absorbing activity.

Great fun dressing in kimonos for the tea ceremony and origami. It was super busy so did feel we were rushed in and on schedule to get us out but we loved it. The ladies were super friendly and a lovely setting. We enjoyed the entire afternoon and highly recommended.
