Daisen-Oki National Park is the largest mountain in the Chugoku region in West Japan. From JR Okayama Station, the closest shinkansen stop where you will have to transfer to another train to take you to Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture where this mountain and national park overlook. Mt Daisen is 1729 meters which is half the height of Mt Fuji, but its location looking over the Japan Sea and the city below is beautiful and best to see in person. I never get sick of the changing scenes of this mountain.
However, I think the best way to enjoy this area is to drive. I have been visiting this mountain and park for close to 25 years, going at least a couple of times a year. The mountain has an aura about it which I believe is connected to its long history as a religious ties to the mountain. Centuries ago only spiritual leaders were able to enter this area. There are many shrines and temples scattered around the rim of the mountain.
One temple worth visiting is Enryuin Temple, it dates back around 1300 years and is associated with Daisen Temple. What makes this temple wonderful is the monk whose love of the area is apparent in the stories he tells. He also offers guided tours to introduce this temple and others within an 8km route. This temple also has a ceiling that is dedicated to comic artist Mizuki Shigeru, showing some of his last illustrations he did.
To get all the information you need about this area you should visit Daisen National Park Information Center, here you can find places to stay, where to eat, activities to do and guides if you are intending to hike.
Another great activity to do is horse riding where you can do within the horse park or they can take you on a trek near the foothills of Mt Daisen. This is a great family activity to do.
If you decide to stay in the National Park you are only 20 minutes away from Yonago City, which has a lot of great places to eat at, featuring seafood and other ingredients famous for this area.
Finally, after an exciting day of activities there are many hot springs to soak in. Usually accommodation in the Daisen area will have hot springs as part of the hotel, or there are some public bathing places in Yonago.

Daisen-Oki is perhaps my favorite national park in Japan! I visited in October, where I got to hike to the top of the mountain. The views were gorgeous as you can look over into multiple prefectures and look out at the ocean.
My favorite part of my park visit was going to the science center to learn about the conservation efforts of Japanese Giant Salamanders! We learned all about their life, then got to go out into the creek to learn how the experts have been tracking these local habitants. It's still a mystery to how long these creatures live! I think this is a great activity for adults and children alike, as it's fun and educational where you get to learn a bit more about Japan's nature.
What I also loved about the national park, overall, were how kind and attentive the park rangers and staff were. That made a big positive impact on my visit!

Mt Daisen in Tottori is an awesome mountain to climb. You can get to Daisen village, just below the trail head, by bus from Yonago Station. There are a few cafes and a much needed onsen hot spring awaiting you when you come back down. It is a tough climb, but, watch your pace, and it should be doable for most relatively fit walkers - though you are advised to check weather forecasts and take appropriate gear.
On a clear day (of the kind I was blessed with) the views are fantastic!
Daisen-ji Temple is well worth checking out to and vegan travelers might consider booking a shojin temple cuisine feast at Sanrakuso in the temple gorunds run by a lovely couple. They also have a "Zen Burger" which is also vegan and available to take out and a perfect treat to enjoy on the summit or on your return.

I've visited the Sanin area of Japan several times and have climbed Mt Daisen twice in different seasons. Then the skies are clear, it is one of the best summit views in Japan! Because it's very close the the sea, it offers amazing panoramic views of Yonago, Lake Shinji and even to Matsue and beyond! It's the jewel of Tottori. Daisen (town) is also a lovely visit. There are several nice cafes, locally run that look like museums inside! The climb up the 3000 year old steps to the shrine is also an excellent experience. If you're visiting in June, don't miss the Natsubaraki TORCH WALK from the top to the bottom. Participating in the event is a magical experience, walking down with 2000 torches dancing through the canopy of trees the town. In the winter, the skiing is good and in the fall, the leaves here are like fireworks! Having a rental car is the way to go, easy to get from Yonago city, the airport nearby. It seems everything is very close from Yonago which is the crossroads of the Sanin Area. If you get a chance, try the Daisen Kuroge Wagyu beef and the amazing vegetables from the area. The dairy products are also excellent and everyone makes a trip to DAISEN MILK NO SATO for a soft cream. Just milk flavored - is incredible!
Ideally you'd need about 2 full days to take it all in but you can easily spend a week hiking and eating your way around the mountain. Enjoy!
