Colo-I-Suva is a beautiful place. My husband and I went right at opening in hopes of seeing some of the many birds within the rainforest. We had to wait for the forest rangers to check that the park was safe since there had been a lot of rain the days before. If you are traveling off season be sure to check the weather as the area is prone to flooding. We got lucky and the park was open.
We walked down the 100 meter road leading to the pools; this was great because we got to hear a lot of bird song and saw some of rare birds we came to see. This is a hot walk so if you’re there for the pools just get a ride to the bottom. We had an afternoon appointment so we only had a couple hours to explore- we basically got down to the upper pool for a quick selfie and had to head back. Another bonus to off season - we had the place to ourselves!

Worth the walk - not very difficult although wearing the right shoes is important. On the day we walked there was one pretty painful fall (Flip flops) and a later tour had a broken limb. Guide was knowledgeable, food was pretty good. Bus in and out a bit scary. The dip in the water was appreciated by all who come to do so.

Waterfall was divine. Tour operators failed to disclose there is a rocky 10 minutes downhill path to walk to and then about 100 steps downhill to get to it. Not a problem for us, but felt sorry for others in the group (elderly) that were struggling.

We took a taxi from the Suva port to the forest today. Firstly be sure to secure a price before you go. We paid $60 Fiji $$ ( $30 US approximately) for a return trip. It was $5 Fiji $ at the entrance per person,

The forest was absolutely beautiful as well as the water falls and swimming pools. There are no maps to carry with you in the park, only a sign at the start of the trails. The trails are not marked and it is very easy to get lost. The railings and foot trails are poorly maintained. They recommend you taking a guide so you don’t get lost (which really means $$$$). Almost like they don’t put signage on the trail so you hire a guide.

It was a beautiful rainforest and the experience was breathtaking. Wish it was a bit safer to walk through.

We visited Colo-i-Suva during a tour and spent a nice amount of time here. The trail to the pools and waterfalls (we went down to the lower falls area) will not be as easy as you may think and we recommend sneakers or hiking boots. It is not smart to wear sandals or flip-flops. You do need to pay attention to the weather in the days leading up to your visit as the water may be too rough and areas may be closed. When we finally reached the pool/waterfall our guide wanted to stop at, we found it unoccupied and had it all to ourselves. The water was extremely refreshing (yes, another park that doesn't like you using words such as cold, freezing, butt-clenching, etc.,) but was amazingly enjoyable and a not-to-be-missed experience, despite the alternative adjectives that may escape your lips at the time of entry into the water. We truly recommend you hire a guide for this area as you should be brought to a really great area and receive a very informative lesson on the local fauna, including how some of the trees 'walk' (we highly, highly recommend Peter with Kay Services (there is a separate review for that.) We didn't have to worry about our things, parking, dealing with tour buses on entry roads that are not made for so many vehicles or such large ones, etc..) Again, this is a not-to-be-missed activity. Don't forget your towel and decent walking shoes.

It’s a pretty cool bush walk, but defiantly not for a casual walker. Running/trail shoes are defiantly recommended.

It kind of feels like you have entered an abandoned tourist attraction built 20 years ago. The security guards were lovely and informed us of which areas were open and closed. We didn’t meet another person on the walk and it took us a lazy hour and a half (lots of photo stops.)

We didn’t swim, but the water was clear even after lots of rain.

As others have mentioned, the trail map is much more of a drawing than a map 😊

Well worth the $5 entry price in my opinion 👍🏼

Colo-i-Suva Forest Park
We visited this park in July 2023 and it is a good half day and some more if you are based in Suva - depending on whether you go swimming or not. It is a half day or less if you are coming from the nearby Rainforest Eco Lodge. You can get there by local bus FJD$2.50 from the starting / ending point of the Colo-i-Suva bus (pronounced “tholo-eee-Suva”) which is opposite the main bus station in Central Suva. Ask around to be directed to it. Take a hat, food and water for a half day, sunscreen plus umbrella if rain is predicted.
The bus winds up a ridge to the north of Suva past various embassies and into the hills. There are signs to the park entry but they are easy to miss since most face the traffic coming from the airport and not from Suva. The park entry is on the right hand side of the road. Get out at the Rainforest Eco Lodge at Colo-i-Suva which is on the left side of the road coming out of Suva and just past the park HQ which is also on the left side of the road. The park HQ is very hard to see as you grind up the hills because it is tucked high on the left after a tight bend. There is a very distinctive blue and white Community Fitness Centre/Police Station on the right hand side of the road almost opposite the Rainforest Eco Lodge. Walk back to the Park HQ on the right hand side of the road (facing downhill back to Suva) so you can see the traffic racing towards you - and take evasive steps if you need to. Go into the cluster of park HQ buildings and pay FJ$5.00 per adult to enter the park - there is a paper sign on the building where you pay. There is also some info on the park and what can be seen in the park on the walls inside the office. Don’t try to avoid paying as there are security guards in the park who will check your receipt.
Do NOT try to cross the road to the entrance to the park which is on the opposite side of the road from the park HQ because this involves walking around a very dangerous and blind road corner. Cars, trucks and buses go fast in both directions and there is no area where pedestrians can walk safely to cross - plus these vehicles certainly do not expect anyone to be so stupid to try and cross here. Instead, there is a path from the building where you pay your entry fee that goes up between other park buildings towards the small plant nursery, further into the HQ complex and then down a short drop (slippery after rain) to the main road below the park HQ. You will see the park entry and barrier gate on the other side of the road. Go down the road a little more towards Suva so that you have a clear view in both directions before crossing the road safely. You do not want to end your trip in a hospital - or worse, the morgue, because the locals, your family and friends will be distraught. If you are a group of backpackers, pay attention to this advice!
Cross the main road and present your receipt to the guard in the booth at the gate. Behind the booth is a map under a shelter. Take a photo of the map and ask the guard which tracks are open and which tracks are closed.
Now unfortunately this park has become a place where visitors have been mugged and robbed, some quite violently which has injured the victims. You can ask the guard in the booth if you are worried, to get security to come up, collect you and accompany you down the gravel road. You can walk down the gravel road (slippery after rain) to the main service area (parking,, toilets, showers) in the park where there should be two security guards who will probably be Sowani and (big) Jim. They will check your receipt and confirm which tracks are open and which are closed. There is also a map if you didn’t photograph the one at the entrance plus pictures of the birds that you might see. Early morning or late afternoon are best, but you should still be able to see some birds during the main part of the day if you are in the quieter areas. We would recommend their guiding services if they offer, as there are numerous, confusing legitimate tracks plus some short cut tracks used by thieves to enter and leave the park rapidly. Sowani and Jim are also genuinely concerned about visitors being robbed because they know it destroys Fiji’s friendly reputation and do not want it to happen to you. They have had several violent encounters with thieves which left the thieves worse off and property has been recovered, so thieves now usually avoid this park. Thieves will also target parked cars, so do not leave anything that looks remotely valuable or suggests that something valuable might be underneath a coat or rug etc. If they do guide you, they can also explain parts of the park, birds and trees that you will not otherwise discover. We would suggest offering a meaningful gift if you have one - or cash, say FJ$10 to $15 for their time and company.
When you walk back out to the main road, you can walk up to the Rainforest Eco Lodge and have a cool drink or something to eat in the big bure, whilst looking over the lake which is the site of a former quarry. This is another good spot for bird watching despite the noise, so you might see some more of the same species of birds that are found in the park.
To return to Suva, stand in front of the blue and white Police Station/Community Fitness Centre because the road is a bit wider here so buses can stop safely and flag down a bus to get back to the Suva Bus Station area. If you come out of Suva in the morning and return in the afternoon you will be going against the peak period rush and the buses won’t be very crowded. If you come by car or taxi then you can work out what you need to know and what you can ignore in the details above.

The trails are not well maintained at all. With frequent rain, comes the need for constant upkeep. It was clear that it wasn't being done. Poor/missing signage. 2/3 of the park is closed off but the trails are not marked/blocked. There were no rangers in the park on the trails. No guides. No signs warning of crime in the park.

If you travel in a large group, or with guides, or there are rangers, you will likely have no problems. If you are in a small group, or alone, you might well be robbed. My wife and I were were attacked by two you men we had seen on the trial and greeted. They ran up behind us on the road, knocking my wife to the ground trying to steal her bag.

Shocked and bleeding we made it to the one security guy, in the parking lot and he used my phone to call the police and the park management.

Police caught the guys, but that is a different story. Unless you are in a large group, or escorted, I'd say stay away.

Great little park with some lovely waterfalls. They’ve paved the area around the pools so you can take a dip; unbelievably refreshing! The staff were all really helpful and they have a nice setup with restrooms etc.

You absolutely MUST wear good footwear with good tread! The path along the water is wet and mossy and very slippery in places. Do not attempt this in flip flops.

Just be aware that there is only one trail which will take a couple of hours to hike; you won’t be spending a day here.

This is a great little thing to do when visiting Suva. It is so close to the city, but you are in a beautiful rainforest. It was the perfect place to break up days in the busy city. The water was clean and inviting. The tracks are well maintained and clear. We saw minimal people and enjoyed the experience
