If "the loneliest road" were for everyone it wouldn't be lonely! This is a gorgeous off-the-beaten path route across Nevada, with ever-changing, subtle scenery. Definitely a five-star driving experience.
Pulling over for gas at the E-Z Stop in Eureka, my husband asked where is the best cheeseburger in town. The cashier-chef said "right here," so we ate at the gas-station-laundromat-liquor store. Since we didn't eat anywhere else, I can't say definitively that it was the best in town, but it was a hand-made and utterly competitive burger in an atmosphere of epicurean je ne sais quois.

We recently stayed in Ely to visit Great Basin National Park. Needless to say we drove Highway 50 multiple times on its eastern end and is it as desolate as they say all the way to Delta, Utah. However it is a great highway for experiencing the Great Basin, this section of the US that does not drain to the Atlantic or Pacific, but rather into itself. In addition to no external drainage, it is also defined by range and basin geography which means as you move east to west or vice versa you pass a series of alternating hot, arid valleys and cool, alpine peaks. Nowhere is this more pronounced than Great Basin National Park where Wheeler Peak at 13,000 feet is nearly 8,000 feet higher than the Snake Valley below. This juxtaposition combines to create environments that are not the most comfortable for living. Thus you have one of the least populated areas in the country and this Highway runs right through it.
We made the 60+ mile drive 3 times and rarely experienced another car on the road. The Steptoe Valley with Ely is the most populated in the east with several interesting things to see like the Ward Charcoal Ovens and a lake. The Green Springs Valley has a windmill farm that at least provides you something to see in addition to the towering Wheeler Peak. Finally, the Snake Valley is the most desolate, really having nothing. You then have two passes around 7,500 feet.
All in all a great road for travel but not a good road to find another traveler. Take a trip on it to really experience the Great Basin.

I was only on the stretch from Ely to the Utah line, where it runs with US-6. There are no services or real inhabited towns at all on this stretch, which adds to the beauty.
Though I have heard about US-50 being desolate west of Ely, I have been on US-6 all the way from Bishop, CA eastward to where they meet, and I can’t imagine any US Highway with less traffic or sites than US-6.
Four stars, because US-6 is the real “Loneliest Road in America”. US-50 has apparently picked up in traffic over the years because of the marketing.

I was stunned by the mountains and the beautiful green valleys. I've been to the Alps and this drive still drew gasps from me. So many times we would come around a corner and have a sweeping view of mountains with snow or craggy rock and desert like atmosphere. Stopped in Eli Nevada and stayed at a cute brick casino hotel. Very clean.

I have done several cross country trips and this trip would be about high desert and volcanoes. I started in Seattle and made my way to Reno. I bought a book about Nevada geology and have been reading it. I saw Crater Lake and passed through the Lava Beds Monument the day before, taking the Volcanic Legacy Route. I spent the night in Fernely, Nevada and started US 50 the next morning with no expectations. I knew it would be desolate and just leave me alone to my stereo and thoughts. The high desert, while barren is beautiful at the same time, especially at certain times of the day when the light plays off of the features of the desert. I passed through small towns like Baker and Ely, where I had lunch. I stopped at Great Basin NP and spent a few hours. I got gas once in Nevada and again in Utah. I took 50 all the way to Colorado except for a short stint on I70 near Grand Junction. My route through Colorado on US50 took me past Great Sand Dunes NP and The Black Canyon Of The Gunnison NP and onto Capulin Volcano NM in New Mexico. The geology is very interesting particularly in Nevada and Utah and makes you realize how small we are and just how grand our natural environment is. This route is more about solitude and reflection than it is knockout attractions though there are many. If you like natural attractions and don't need to be entertained I did see a surprising amount of wildlife as well, pronghorn, antelope, deer, rabbits, one snake, and a desert fox. I highly recommend this drive alongside routes like the Beartooth Highway or Wildlife Loop or the White Mountains Route.

I’ve taken the I-80 route from SLC to SF far too many times. Today, I had to do the trip again, for the second time in three days. So in order to see something new, I left I-80 at Wendover, headed south to Ely (a 120-mile trip through desolate and beautiful territory in its own right) and then picked up US-50 to Fernley.
It was a much more interesting drive than I-80.
Most of the route is posted with a 70 mph speed limit, but in reality you can drive most of it at 85-90 with no problem. There are three or four small towns where you need to slow down to 25-35 mph. Due to COVID-19, I did not stop for anything but fuel (and a couple of 10-minute hiking breaks).
There are some mountain passes where you will want to slow down because the scenery is really quite beautifuL
After spending seven or eight hours driving through these types of landscapes (with virtually no human-made reference points), time becomes fluid. Distance becomes fluid.
Civilization (as we know it) all comes back into focus again once you reach Fallon. But for quite a big chunk of today, I was traveling through a parallel universe... or back in time... or to a place without time.

My amazing father in-law was helping me move (military move from Louisiana to Northern California) and we stumbled upon the loneliest road in America. Our expectations were low due to what we thought the central Utah/Nevada landscape would look like. We decided that a free “I survived” pin was worth giving it a shot. To our surprise, after 1600 miles of travel and crossing through the Colorado Rockies, that this would be the most beautiful part of our journey. Between stunning high desert landscapes and mountain passes (I grew up in CO and I was blown away) this was by far the best part of our 2200 mile journey. Well worth the diversion from I-15 to save a few hours. I highly recommend that anyone traveling between western Utah and Nevada try to take a couple of days to witness this untouched landscape. We’re going to try to do it again with more time in order to experience sights along the way.

Not like normal heaven. More like tibet. Still Austin as winter winds down is pre-war and Great Basin np and the cavern is great. Finally there's nothing like high desert driving to remind you that we're insignificant

Six hours in the car is a long time for one day! However, when you get to see beautiful scenery like we did that changes over the course of the drive from Ely, NV to South Lake Tahoe, time doesn’t matter! We picked up our passport books in Ely and grabbed lime rickeys at Economy Drug before heading west. We got stamped along the way and saw unique sites (i.e. the Eureka Sentinel Museum, Sand Mountain, etc). A couple weeks after returning home we mailed in the passport page with the stamps and in less than two weeks got our certificates and pins! This was a fun way to spend part of our road trip!

Drove this road for a short segment from the junction of NV376 to the Junction of NV305. This portion traverses Austin Pass summit and the town of Austin. It is a very steep, twisty section with beautiful scenery.

Hi, I am thinking of driving along Hwy.50 from Philadelphia to San Francisco at the end of June. I will be driving alone in a minivan with a bunch of my stuff. I understand this is a big endeavour but maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity.
1. Is this a safe road for the trip? I hear there are long stretches of no human being if something happens to the car.
2. How long would it take? I am planning to do this in 7 days. Is this practical?
3. Any other coast to coast route you would recommend over this?
Thanks

Sorry for the late follow-up but we wanted to provide you accurate information. The answer is "yes," the Border Inn at the Nevada/Utah state line (Highway 50). You can visit the Border Inn Casin website for more information.

I am planning to drive from Las Vegas to hwy 50. I plan to spend just a few hours on hwy 50 before going to death valley. What part of this highway should I target to explore? What town would be the closest town near this highway for my journey.

Ely and Austin are interesting stops. There is wild life along the road in areas. Seasonal I’m assuming. The road is interesting in general. It’s not too monotonous because scenery isn’t identical. But similar enough to be peaceful.
Looking for campground recommendations on or near Hwy 50 between Ely and Fallon Nevada. We'll be tent camping and would like water and electric, but not a requirement. Plan to be in that area sometime between mid-June and mid-July. Thanks!

you should be fine, the only area I would have HUGE concerns about would be the pass in Colorado, it was hard to drive in the summer without any snow.

Hi, we are thinking of driving from Utah to Reno in Late March. Can anyone advise if it would be advisable to use route 50, we will be in a hire car as we are from England.
Thanks Keith
Hi, We would be driving US-50 East from Ely, NV to I-15 in December around Christmas. How should be the snow conditions around this time of the year? Shall I get the snow chains for my rental car. I have read in forums that Ely is at 6000 ft elevation and Great Basin NP is ~10000ft. Please suggest.

The weather this time of year can be quite unpredictable. Currently the roads are all clear and there is little moisture in the forecast except a slight chance of snow Friday & Saturday. If you are renting an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive you should be just fine even if we get snow. Our plows are very good at keeping the roads in and out of Ely open and clear. If you are going with a smaller compact I would at least make sure that there is good tread on the tires. As a general rule the roads stay open and passable. Travel during an actual snow storm can be tricky and we usually recommend travelers wait it out. They usually don't last long. If you have any other questions please feel free to call at 800-496-9350. Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you.
Is this route safe for a 5 th wheel trailer

We went from Ely, Nevada to Carson City. Either way it doesn't matter.😊. Want to do early spring or early fall. When we came back in June it was getting pretty "toasty". Make sure you get on Nevada's sight. They will send you a passport book- need at least 5 of 8 stamps and the state of Nevada will send you a certificate that you survived the Lonliest Road. It's corny but kind of cute.😑👍
