Malcolm was grumpy and unhelpful. The bikes were not well maintained. We hired 14 bikes nine had repair kits. We got 2 flat tyres. When I phoned about the second Malcolm asked where are we riding on, glass? I said no just the road. When he came to pick up the second bike I asked why the bikes did not have repair kits he said they did have them, implying that we had stolen/lost them. When I said I would not tolerate being accused of stealing he said just get in the car you F@&$ing B$&@h. I refused his offer of a lift and walked back to our accommodation.

This is the best way to do the wineries in the North Havelock to Clifton area. Not too many hills, good wineries and beautiful scenery - mostly off main roads.
The staff were chilled and relaxed - bikes were adequate hybrid bikes - perfect for the ride we did. You can comfortably bring 2 bottles each home in the pannier 😜

An easy area to ride, good tracks, flat & many interesting things to see, do & drink. Bike hire will pick up purchases & deliver back to you. Good selection of well maintained bikes. Enjoyable for a wide range of age groups. You won't be sorry.

We were picked up inhavelock orth and took teh bikes fromthere. We went to black barn(wineflight), clearview (lunch platter) and elephant hill (dessert), which were all lovely. Going up and down the hills is not what i am used to as i come from the very flat netherlands, but it was doable even for me. I loved going past the beach, the colour of the water is beautifully turquoise. All in all a great experience without having to worry about drinking wine and having to drive.

Hired a bike here for a day (had planned to use for a couple more days) but I was dissatisfied with the mechanical quality of the bike. After about 15 min into my 45 km trip the front wheel/brake started squeaking, and from that point on I had lots of comments from many strangers that my bike needed oiling! Actually it needed more than that - it needed reasonable checking of the mechanics of the bike before I even hired it. When I returned the bike at the end of the day the mechanic kindly pointed out that that the front disc brake had partially jammed...
Additionally the bike wouldn't easily transition to some gears - perhaps the derailleur mechanism should have been mechanically checked before I hired the bike.
Having said the above, I hired another bike off another company the next day, and it had even worse mechanical problems!
Based on the experience above, I wouldn't recommend Good Fun Bike Rides.

John at Revolution was brilliant.
Helping us with our rental of bikes and helmets.
Lots of good tips.
Also he helped us with our route.
30 k round trip to Clifton visiting the Clearview Vineyards and Elephant Hill.
Lunch at Clearview is to be recommended.
We paid $10 for our sampling @ Elephant Hill but our tasting @ Clearview was free.
A great day and good bikes too.
If you want a fun day in the fresh air with the odd glass of wine,this is for you.

I love Havelock North village, and we were staying just down the road so it was an easy walk to Good Fun Bikes. Malcolm and the guys at Revolution bikes were helpful in getting us set up, and advising on routes.
We chose to do the Landscape trail. Starting from Revolution Bikes, we went along Te Mata Road, visited Black Barn & Red Barrel for wine tasting, and stopped in to Te Mata (only then we realised why Te Mata Cheese was not on the map, it disappeared some time ago).
Then a short uphill ride (ok I walked a bit) and whiz back down the other side to Craggy Range for a lovely wine tasting there. This would also be a good place to stop for lunch, although it is on the upper end of price range.
Then back the way we came, and turned to ride on to the new off road trail, taking us along the river and down the back of the vineyards. This was absolutely blissful.
We came out on to the road again, and along Te Awanga. By this time Clearwater was full for lunch so we pressed on to Clifton Cafe (the food was not spectacular, but it is a lovely spot by the water, and well priced). We'd been riding for several hours, and being inexperienced we were pretty full, happy and content by this point so we called Malcolm for a pickup.
You even get a bonus pat of "Possum", Malcolm's dog, who came along for the ride.
This was a wonderful way to spend a day, and good to know you have the backup of a pickup!
I would highly recommend this activity, and will be hoping to return again one day.

If you go to the iSite in Havelock North the owner will tell you can that his bikes are the only ones available for rent in town. That is not true! Round the corner on Donnelly Street is Revolution Bikes and it is an outlet for Good Fun Bike Rides. The staff there were extremely helpful and I had a carefully fitted very good hybrid bike for a week and enjoyed the bike trails all over the region. We got exactly what we asked for, Malcolm sorted out the helmets for the little ones and made sure all the seats were at the right height etc then gave us a suggested route taking as many (or few) wineries we wanted to fit it. Drink driving legally!! He also suggested a short cut if we got tired!
The roads were safe, empty and, more importantly, FLAT!
The lunch platter at Salvare Estate was fantastic and they even got toys out for our toddlers.
A great day out had by all and the owners at Triangle Cellars were fabulous too.
