No, it is not easy to rate the Mahamaharshi Ashramam. We visited it for the first time in 1985 and have been coming back again and again since then. It is a fantastic place, full of symbols and experiences. The place radiates power, the Arunachala alone is worth a trip.
When we arrived, 1985, we got off the bus in front of the main entrance, an Ashramite was there immediately and took us to a room in the Ashram without to ask if we have make a reservation. No advance booking, no palaver, we were there, that was enough. You could take photos everywhere, all the time. Back then, there was no big dining room like today, it was all family-like, in the morning you could read the daily newspaper in front of the reception office. You had More personal contact with people in charge.
Since years it is quite different. The coffee/Tea stalls around the tree in front of the Ashram entrance have disappeared, with the old tree. Now there is a big shop. the sand road around Arunachala has been paved, photography is forbidden, not that it bothers me much, I have already taken so many photos. And the traffic has increased. Tiruvanamalai town has grown bigger and surrounds the Ashram grounds. But very nice, the trees in the holy mountain have grown bigger and higher and the forest is denser.
But today you have to register with emails and online forms, send photos, then you don't get a reply because you register too early. Is it very anonymous, now.
That's how it is, time moves on and everything changes, there's no point in trusting, but I don't want to come back. I keep the memories warm and alive inside me. Memories of Swami Satya Ananda and his mini ashram, long gone, memories of the early pradakshina around Arunachala on the sandy track, memories of the villagers of Annamalai who all wanted photos, memories of drinking cups of tea with friendly sannyas in front of the ashram gate. It was beautiful, now I have to accept that it's over.

Overall, Thiruvannamalai is the place to be if you are trying to get some answers for yourself and are on a path of self-realization.
Ramana Ashram. - Management has been a increasingly arrogant for no reason. They have also deviated from Ramana's teachings. The meditation hall is seldom peaceful. If you list bhajans from morning to evening and allow people to gossip, when do you think meditation can be done? The sanctity of this place is falling apart with influx of loud talking/brutish behavior of Indian tourists. No need to blame foreigners. As an Indian, I have observed them to be quiet, peaceful, following rules. It's actually the Indians (right from the tourist, the idiots who come there to yap, those that cannot shut up about family issues there, auto wallas trying to rip off all outsiders).
Ashram has no way to control this and it's frankly not working showing the Silence Please Boards. Most illiterates read it and continue talking in loud decibels. Ashram mgmt itself makes demands for more donation and has been observed to be very arrogant.

A good and peaceful aashram located on the main road.. lot of people in the ashram everyday and they do offer lunch for every body.. It's really worth to visit this ashram..

The Ramana Ashram offers peace and tranquility. It is a place to experience ones own mind in the silence of the ashram. There is a feeling of extreme calmness which best suits meditation which ultimately reveals your inner self. Do visit the Ashram and walk up the hill to the cave where Shri Ramana sent his last years.

This is the final resting place of sri ramana maharishi. The place is filled with disciples offering their respect to ramana maharishi. The ashram is very peaceful and filled with positives vibes. The meditation Hall is very calming and a must visit. There is also a back passage to virupaksha caves a 4km trek. The place where ramana maharishi used to meditate for long periods of time

Ideal place for a spiritual seeker to go and stay in the ashram. I stayed in the ashram for 5 days and it was an enriching experience. Meditation anywhere in the ashram happens instantly and with Vedic chanting and songs it makes the place an abode of the celestials.
Silence is maintained throughout the ashram which gives more calmness to the mind.
The sumptuous healthy and tasty food 3 times a day is a topping on the cake.

Must visit place if you are on spiritual journey and find the answer, Who am I
Nice place to do meditation, also don’t forget to take track on the hill to see ashram at cliff and a cave where he used to do meditation. Must visit place, there food is simple sativik and delicious, everything free for everyone.

I have not been to an ashram before, and this one definitely gives a good understanding of what it’s about. Lone line for free food on the late morning to a mix of Indian and a few foreigners as well. Large book shop provides an intro to the guru of the ashram. Very interesting.

I plan to visit the ashram. I have requested for booking. If I do not get a place in the ashram, where is best to stay outside?
Also, I needed some advice on transport options.
I plan on taking either bus or taxi from Coimbatore to the Ramana ashram. When leaving, I will be taking a taxi from Ramana ashram to Tiruchapalli airport.
Is it possible to get taxi on the same day or do I book from somewhere in advance?

Me and my family is gonna visit Arunachalam in April for visiting the temples.Can we get accommodation in the ashram for this purpose?

Yes you can get the accommodation at the ashram once the same is confirmed by the ashram authorities.
You have to send a mail to the ashram with the dates of travel and number of family members.
Kindly note only 3 days are permissible in the ashram for accommodation.

My guess is that you'll have pay around Rs. 3000 if you hire a taxi and go on your own.

I am going here for a meditation retreat. I have permission to stay at Ashram. Here are my questions:
1. Is it possible to purchase a bean cushion for meditation sits (at ashram or outside) ?
2. Do i have to get permission to leave campus, if i want to visit places outside ashram ?
3. Will my tablet, passport and cell phone be safe in my residence (i will be using my own lock on this single room quarters). ?
4. Will i be able to keep strict silence for 10 days there, if i wanted to (and still manage to interact with the service people there when need arises) ?
5. Will there be toilet rolls in my quarters, or do i have to bring my own ?
Any other tips you can give to a first time is appreciated.

Ah, i forgot to add one more. I need to hire a taxi in a train station that is about 2 hours away from this Ashram. Will i be safe in a taxi, which is booked in advance through the internet ? It will be day time travel, alone with the taxi driver .

How long does it take to walk from the Sri Rsmana Ashram complex up to Skandashram? Also, what is the best way to find an ox cart ride for circumnavigating Arunachala? Thanks!

Skandashram is neighbouring the Ramana Ashrama complex. You have to come out of Ramana Ashrama complex and walk a few steps to reach Skandashrama.
I have no idea about Ox cart for hire for Giri Pradarshanam.

I understand that in terms of accomodation there is little availability at tbe ashram, but can "externals" attend the daily activities of the day, and sleep elsewhere? If yes, do we need to reserve? Thank you
