Having hired here over many years it is my favourite boatyard.boats are a little tired but well maintained.there is a good variety in the fleet of boats starting from small 4 seaters to 10 or 12 seaters. Terry the owner of the yard is very helpful , a little firm but whats you to have a good day out on the water.before you set out you are given handover which will help first timers on what to do.overall ive never had a bad experiance with this yard. After hiring boats from other places in the area this is the one to go from.

We had a wonderful day out as a family having a leisurely sail along the river. We had the 8 seater with canopy, which was much appreciated when it rained. Jill, Terry and their son could not have been more helpful in terms of facilitating the booking, briefing us on how the boat operated and talking through procedures at the locks. We can really recommend Purvis Marine!

We hired a 8 person boat for the day with our friends. The ban at purvis was excellent . Spoke to us all reference safety on the boat. All kids were given life jackets. We were given a booklet with maps and diagrams in on how to operate the locks. Maps of the river and places of interest.
Boat was very old and worn but did the job. But had everything on it we needed.
We had a great day 9.00-6pm.
Locks were very fun and we all enjoyed our day.
Would recommend this boat hire place.

A massive thanks to Matt , who took 12 lovely ladies out on Saturday on the river . He was amazing & looked after us really well . Apart from some idiots not knowing how to act on the river . The day was perfect . We will defiantly be returning . A wonderful day out . Thank you all , but especially Matt

After scouring the local marinas we decided to opt for Purvis marine. We were absolutely right to do so. The extensive knowledge, excellent customer service and thorough attention to detail shown, made for a fantastic trip. As novices, we were tentative to say the least, but Jill and Terry made us welcome and put us at ease with a complete tuition on using their craft and river etiquette. Our vessel was great and made us feel safe, paramount to a 40 year old non swimmer (I know I'm lame). We pottered towards st Ives on a beautiful stretch of the ouse, stopping at various quaint locations to enjoy the local wildlife and watering holes. Our party of 8 were overjoyed with our trip and cannot recommend Purvis marine enough. We will definitely be going again and most certainly be visiting Jill Terry and Matt at Purvis.

We didn't hire a boat with these boys, we hired one with a local boating establishment.
We met Matt at a local pub, 15 minutes from where we were due to return the boat. He quickly took us down a peg when he told us his boat was faster than ours and we decided we would settle our differences on the river like men. He had a party of around 10 women, presumably they were out for a quiet day (or not) on the lake but they hadn't accounted for Matthew being a BBR (Boat Boy Racer).
He quickly sped off into the distance and we thought that was the end of it as the superior boater and sailor had won our dual. Fast forward 5 minutes down the road (river) he had clearly slown down and was lurking towards the left of the river waiting for us. He was shouting at us which I can I only assume was nice, complimentary things because I couldn’t really hear him, the only thing we could work out was ‘’turn right’’. At this point we were 4/5 meters to his right and he decided he wasn’t having it and started to turn towards us, we were locked in a slow speed collision and us being novice boaters we were like a rabbit in headlights waiting for our impending doom. Several seconds later we collide and a small ripple to our boats and my friend, Mr Daniel preceded to ‘offer’ Matthew to one side of the lake to settle their differences to which he declined.
Matthew is a fine sailor, destined for the very top of the boating world but with this careless driving I have had to leave a review of 2 out of 5 stars.
We hope to go boating again soon and hope to see Matt so we can buy him a beer and put our differences aside once and for all.

Thank you for your review. As managing director of this company although you have not complained directly to us I have conducted a thorough investigation into this matter. After interviewing the qualified pilot in question, his passengers, and independent witnesses, we have concluded that the incident is not as described above and that our pilot was in no way the perpetrator of this incident. On checking the boat the speed limiter was in tact and so the boat would be mechanically unable to exceed the speed limit. Ultimately threatening behaviour will not be tolerated towards anyone, our customers or staff alike, and therefore we have informed all the relevant authorities. We would gladly discuss this matter further if you would like to get in touch.

Very easy to book a boat from here. We had a good safety briefing and short instruction on how to use the locks before leaving. Our boat was speed limited (as they all are) so we didn't have to worry about that. We had a great time going up to St Ives (via two locks which someone else managed for us luckily) where we tied up for a walk and a picnic. Hot summers day, picnic, river and your favourite person beside you. What could you ask for more. We spend a whole day (8 hours) out on the water which was entirely relaxing and engaging.

We had such a laugh on the Great Ouse having hired a boat from Purvis Marine. Great service, we had a mini training session before we set sail and one of the best days together as a family we have had in a long time.

We had some visitors over from South Wales and decided to take them for a trip on the river from Huntingdon up to St Ives and back. Its a great trip just a couple of locks to deal with - they were easy thanks to the excellent briefings by Terry and Jill at Purvis Marine. It was the most relaxing day I have had for a looooooong time. All you can do is to chug steadily along, no rushing, just take it easy. We had a 21 foot, tiller steering launch called Rebecca which has a cover over three quarters of the boat - great for keeping the sun off! It also had roll down sides just in case the weather turned but fortunately we didn't need them! I was in shirt sleeves for the whole trip but some of the other lilly livered lubbers in the party did resort to cardies and fleeces - whimps! We tied up at St Ives for a picnic. If you want to just go without faffing about - there are plenty of take aways, cafes and bakers within 200 yards of the moorings by the Norris Museum, alternatively the Flood Tavern is only 50 yards away ;o)
We had a great time. Jill and Terry ran through the safety briefings and made it all sound so easy - and in reality it was!
When you go to the boat yard, don't judge a book by its cover. It is chaotic - its a working boat yard where they carrry out all manner of boat repairs and marine services. The hire boats are a small part of what they do. The boats themselves are not all new, white and shiney - they are well used and well serviced boats more than adequate for the task. Once you are on the river you will soon forget about your boat as you will be too busy with all of the scenary that you pass on the way. There is so much wild life - herons, cranes, geese, ducks, moor hens, coots, more dragon flies than you can shake a stick at, plus you get to have a bit of a nosey in to all of the gardens of the house that back on to the river. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars if you have them - guess who forgot to take theirs!
What could marr your day - well not taking anything to drink or some sweeties - it takes a couple of hours to get up to St Ives and the time just flies past - unless your mouth is as dry as the Atacama. Rain might dampen the enthusiasm but to be honest if I was going out on the river again and it was a bit drizzley. If you are not on a really tight budget go for a larger boat than you need. Were a group of 5 plus an English Setter that likes to lay wherever you want to walk and Rebecca was capable of taking 12 - which it could, but personally I like a bit of space and a choice of where to sit and think Rebecca would be ideal for maybe 8 and a large hound. Terry and Jill have a range of boats and one of them is bound to tick all the boxes for you.
We didn't rock up until nearly midday - get their early and make the most of your time.
I think the highest recommendation that anyone can give is when asked would you do it again they reply in a heartbeat - absolutely.
Would I do it again - absolutely!
