Absolutely fanatic steak! Probably the best steak I’ve had In my life. The couple behind stated ‘if these guys don’t do good steak, then we are screwed’ the service was fantastic and was great to see the restaurant busy. I had the crocodile and prawn starter and we shared the tomahawk steak *chefs kiss* it was like butter and will be telling everyone about it! I’ll be back with bells on!

Great place, was a last minute find and pleasently suprised with the cheap entry to see the animals with a wide array to see also. My daughter loved seeing the animals and the reptile house also. Had lunch in resturant and food was good quality and tasty.

Ten family member pre-booked and pr-ordered for a meal on 28 December 2022,Service was poor, meal came late and not very hot. On guest had to return their order as it was luke warm. Waited a considerable time for desserts and after that decided we would cancel the dessert order and leave. Not a pleasant experience for a long awaited family get together. Paid for our mains and left. Might not return in a hurry. Very disappointed

Good value for money (people forget they have to feed the animals, heat the buildings and pay staff). Good range of animals to see (we saw them all) and they all looked happy and healthy, with good size enclosures, which had things in them for the animals to do. The tropical house is brilliant, very good for getting photos of the animals. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the animals. Very nice tearoom, with good range of food and drink at good prices. Brilliant farm shop too, wide range of products and helpful staff. Look forward to going back. The only thing we would say, is would be good if there were more toilets.

Some of the animals were in suitable enclosures but many especially the tortoises were in dreadful conditions. They had no food to eat, the water water bowl was not large or flat enough for them to lay in (they take in water to hydrate through their anus) The floor was concrete with scattered soil so absolutely impossible for them to burrow which is how they are comfortable and control their temperature. The poor tortoises was showing desperately trying to dig and climb up the sides of the cage. With no exposure to sunlight they couldn’t bask and so not getting the UV rays that are essential to their health and growth.
The whole family came out in shock in how the animals were treated.
We tried to find someone that worked there but couldn’t find a single person in charge of the animals.

My husband and I went to Johnsons for a meal because we did not want to go too far from base.
My husband ordered the Henry VIII breakfast with brown toast and no black pudding. He was asked if he would like to replace the black pudding with extra mushrooms or egg. He said yes please. I ordered a Little Edward breakfast and for drinks we ordered a decaf tea and a breakfast tea.
There was quite a wait for the teas and even longer for the breakfasts. The breakfasts arrived but we received 2 Little Edward breakfasts. I had to wait for a while in order to speak to someone about the mistake that was made. I explained to the manager exactly what I ordered and that the young girl at the till must have understood what I said because she asked me if I would like something else in place of the black pudding. I asked the manager to walk with me to my table so she could see my husband's meal. She said she will get it changed. In the mean time my breakfast and pot of tea had gone cold. After about ten minutes my husband's meal arrived. When the young lad brought this breakfast he said I would have to pay for the extras but no need to do this until we were ready to leave .As for the food the fried eggs and the mushrooms were floating in fat on the plates and there was only one pat of butter for the 2 pieces of toast for each meal. I asked for an extra butter for the toast and the young lad said he would get some, but we never received any, so my husband had to eat a slice of dry toast.
When we finished I went up to the till and said to the young lady, 'I have been told I have to pay for the extra even though the mistake was not mine. I explained to you what we wanted to order and you double checked that with me but you managed to get it completely wrong and make it out that it was my mistake'. I didn't see why I had to pay for something that was not my mistake.
As for the price of the meals we thought it was a rather extortionate price to pay - over £24 - I could have had a steak and all the trimmings where I come from for that.
We were going to go round and look at the animals but the meal experience completely put us off.
NEVER AGAIN!!!

This has been a consistently excellent place to visit for many years. However, a significant part of its appeal has recently been lost.
Basically, there are no longer any free family-friendly areas anymore. By this I mean previously there was an excellent kids play area and you could look at the animals for free. This was half the appeal of the venue and helped justify the longer journey time and the splashing out of a little extra on some quality food produce. End result was a win-win, happy parents and happy kids.
That has changed and it's now £3 per adult and £2 per child to get through the pay fence to access those play and animal areas. Effectively meaning the sole reason to travel now is the shop and restaurant - which today were both the most empty we have ever seen them. The kids were moaning throughout about not being allowed to see any of the animals (we were on a quick visit). They will surely moan throughout on all the other such occasions also. We might be better off not going at all - and certainly not for quick shops.
I can't help but feel the owners have bitten off more than they can chew here. The recent direction has been to purchase a handful of big exotic animals and I'm sure the upkeep of those is very expensive. But there isn't ultimately enough to look at for the charge. Especially considering there's risk of not seeing the pair of pumas and brown bear, etc, because they are sometimes out of view.
It would be more palatable and encouraging if, for example, a single family pass was issued for free when spending over £50 in the shop/restaurant. Visit valid for the actual day of purchase only. If you're seeking to eject the freeloaders and increase revenues.
What I can say with 100% confidence is this: the kids are equally delighted looking at a selection of cheaper animals such as the goats, donkeys, chickens, meerkats, birds, deer, etc. Make no mistake, the wonder of it all has been written in their eyes for years at Johnsons - long before any of the exotics arrived. But now all the long-term equity generated from that visitor appeal seems to be used to purchase animals much higher up the food chain. Which the kids can't get as close to and adds £10 to the already premium shop. From a business point of view, I just don't see the logic in this new direction. And the front-of-house looks like a scene from The Great Escape now, too.
The bitter words come from the heart because Johnsons has been an exceptional place to visit for many reasons. The crew are all very friendly and helpful and the food is top notch. And we've watched in wonder at the tireless expansion and upgrading of the facilities over the years. However, by dissecting the location into two distinct areas, I fear the long-standing appeal for many family shoppers has now been sacrificed on the altar of acquiring a few showcase animals.

Our family visited here and had a lovely day. We were ages 3 through 68 and everyone enjoyed our time. The kids especially liked the play area and we all liked the animals. The alligator exhibit is incredible. Our lunch in the cafe was delicious and the deli and shop was full of yummies to take home. Don't miss the medieval local church and graveyard right next door! We were fortunate enough that it was open and got to take a peek inside as well.

Hi
Just checking there are no sheep here? I'm pregnant and avoiding farms with sheep due to toxoplasmosis risk! Many thanks
