Situated at the heart of the Badulla town. One of the temples belong to’Solosmasthana’. The Lord Buddha visited this place on the invitation of God Indaka after visiting Kelaniya. The pagoda contains the sacred sweat that said to be turned into pearls and hair. The pagoda was later reconstructed and renovated by many kings. This place also has the Ananda bo tree. Even it’s situated middle of a busy city this place very calm and peaceful. Parking is available in the behind the temple which is chargeable.

Muthiyangana Dagoba in Badulla:
Badulla is situated at the foot of Mount Namunukula, which is the most significant and impressive peak in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka’s highlands. Similarly to Siri Pada (Adam’s Peak) in the southwestern highlands, Namunukula is guarded by a deity. Whereas one of the highest gods of the island, Samana, is the protector of Siri Pada and the Ratnapura at the foot of Sri Lanka’s most venerated mountain, it is a local deity,named Indika, who is the mountain god in the Badulla area. And just as Saman is connected to the legendary visits of Lord Buddha to the island, Indaka invited the Buddha, too. So the legend goes: When the Buddha, in the eights year after his enlightenment, visited Sri Lanka for the third time, he did so on invitation of King Maniakkika of Kelaniya. After resting at the foot of the mountain in Divaguhawa, he went (or flew) to the top of Siri Pada (Adam’s Peak), leaving his footprint on the summit, which is protected by Saman. But then he was invited by the guardian deity of the Namunukula, the above-mentioned Indaka, to visit his home region Badulla, too. So the Buddha did. When he rested in Badulla and held a sermon, beads of perspiration dropped to the ground, instantly transforming themselves into pearls. “Muthu” means “pearl”. So this place became known as “Muthiyangana”. It is held in hight esteem among Sinhalese people and counted as one of the 16 places of the island honoured by the presence of Lord Buddha. These Buddha-visited places are called Solosmasthanas. Badulla Muthiyangana Dagoba this being one of them. This stupa was erected by Indaka at the place of the sermon. Besides the pearls, it also contains hairs of the Buddha. Dagobas enshrining parts of the body of the Buddha, of course, are the highest category of Stupas.

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the middle of Badulla town. It was visited by Lord Buddha and it is a must visit place in Badulla specially for Buddhists. Very calm and quiet environment.

Muthiyanganaya Temple is a sacred place being worshipped by Buddhists as it was visited by Lord Buddha. This temple is close to Badulla town and easily accessible. Very calm and quiet place. And a must visit in Badulla.

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, in central Badulla, is one of the 16 sacred places of Buddhist worship in Sri Lanka. It dates back to the 3rd visit of the Lord Buddha who arrived with 500 monks in about 520 BC. Indaka, the local chieftain of the Deva people, had invited Buddha to visit his kingdom in Badulla and, after hearing Buddha’s sermon, asked for something from Buddha to worship in his memory. Buddha gave a few hairs and some drops of sweat that turned into pearls. These were enshrined in a stupa and a temple complex developed around it. The Globetrotter Atlas states that the shrine also houses Buddha’s jawbone. This is incorrect, and should refer to Mahiyanganaya, also in Central Province, about 65km to the north, which is rumoured to contain part of Buddha’s neck.
The Muthiyangana stupa has been developed and renovated many times, but the stupa that you see today was constructed in 1956 on the ruins of the ancient one. Today the temple complex, besides the stupa, contains the Thorana entrance, image houses, statues of Buddha and Indaka and 4 bo trees. One of these bo (Pipal) trees, the oldest and most important, is surrounded by a gold plated fence and was a sapling or cutting taken from Sri Maha Bodhi (The Sacred Bodhi Tree) at Anuradhapura. The Sri Maha Bodhi itself is from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree at Bodh-Gaya, India, under which Buddha attained his enlightenment in 528 BC, and is now the oldest historically recorded tree in the world.
