So much to see here. We went as a group of three friends and had a lovely time. It's great to see so much creativity in one town The cafe is lovely and delicious coffee too.

Local/regional museums are a joy, and often give one a better inside into town and area they represent, with small temporary displays a bonus. This museum is no different, and is a great example of this! From Stone age to now, this museum gives the visitor a true history of Buxton. The collection of pottery is impressive. While the staff where friendly, helpful and informative, the small gift shop could do with a bit more stock. Free to enter, I could not recommend a better museum in Derbyshire!

This museum is in a beautiful old building and it's very easy to get to. Entrance is free. There is a gift shop at the front. Staff here are super professional.
They have permanent galleries that showcase their core collections of Peak District archaeology, geology, art and local history. Wonderful coin collections, video photography on display and a rather unusual mermaid.
There is an exhibition about archaeologist Sir William Boyd Dawkins. He was a British geologistand archaeologist. He was a member of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, Curator of the Manchester Museum and Professor of Geology at Owens College, Manchester. He is noted for his research on fossils and the antiquity of man.
There is a particular piece in here that fascinated me. There are a couple of sheep heads on the wall. This pair earned a distinction in 1830 when they were sold by their owner in Hope Valley to a farmer in Kent. It seems that the sheep weren't impressed with their new surroundings and decided to walk back to Derbyshire- a journey of 200 miles. As a reward for their loyalty, the intrepid duo lived out their lives back home where they enjoyed a degree of fame. When the sheep died, their owner had their heads mounted.

Great little museum, 2 mins walk from town centre, in an historic building with great stained glass. Several exhibition spaces, including permanent archaeological section and rotating art exhibition. Gorgeous recreation of the study of a Victorian antiquarian, with cabinets of curiosity and the smell of books. A gorgeous small display of a 19th expedition to the NW passage with Inuit art and sculpture. Not just worth seeing, definitely worth going to see, and with inspiration for other things to visit.

Free entry, and a great place to spend an hour or so on a wet day. Fascinating range of exhibits from fossils to Ashford Black Marble (I could live without the bear though). Enjoyed the exhibition on industrial heritage, and much appreciated a staff member discussing the large drawing of old Buxton behind the information desk.

From the outside, I thought the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery was just a couple of rooms, no bigger than a large shop. However, on entry (which is free) I realised that it’s much bigger - with access to lovely rooms and galleries, packed with exhibits and guides, plus excellent films and slide shows on continuous display. A good range of paintings and drawings is mixed in with the historical exhibits. At the time of my visit today (11/3/23) one gallery had a wonderful array of paintings titled ‘Farm on the Hill’ by David Lowther
It is a series of works in different media of the same area near Buxton.
Exhibits included a room dedicated to Victorian archaeologists, a small display about Inuit peoples and the Terror-Erebus disaster (after Sir John Franklin tried to explore the North West Passage in Victorian times); one room featured lead, lime and coal mining in Derbyshire, and next to it a large hall had excellent exhibits of fossils, palaeontology and geology, local history and artefacts going back to Roman times and the Bronze Age. There was also a display of various inventions associated with the area, an exhibit of Blue John fluorite minerals, and Black Marble furniture and vases (it’s neither black nor marble). Plus loads of other things to see.
If you’re in Buxton Town Centre, a visit to the Museum and Art Gallery is a must!

No dedicated parking, but there is a public car park on the green park opposite. It should not be difficult to find on-road parking if you are prepared to walk a short distance.
