We engaged Gaul's Legacy Tours for a multi-day heritage tour to learn more about the region where my great-grandfather emigrated from in 1868. We had basic data including names of other family members, birth date, birth record and village of birth. My hope was to visit the village and learn more about his times and life and what may have induced him to emigrate to the United States. What we received thanks to Roland and Silvia was much, much more. As "the" expert on the Battle of the Bulge and the WWII battles across the Ardennes Forest Roland's contacts throughout the region opened doors for us throughout our visit...and not just doors associated with WWII. He went way beyond expectation and contacted multiple sources that led him to a living relative and arranged for a meeting--a true highlight of my visit.
During the visit my relative referenced a book of local history compiled and published in 1993. The book listed other relatives and identified locations where my great-great grandfather had a home--likely where my great-grandfather grew up. Upon mention of the book, Silvia, immediately googled the title and found a copy for sale on a used book website. She ordered the book on my behalf...and then arranged to have it shipped to me in the USA where the book was waiting for me on my return...talk about customer service. Way beyond any expectation!
My relative had no knowledge of my great-grandfather's birth or emigration but there is no doubt from our common records there is a family link...and while the reason for his departure from Luxembourg remains a mystery we came away with much deeper knowledge of the region (thanks to visits to Vianden Castle, Musee Rural a Schiewesch in Binsfeld and Tourist Center Robbesscheier.
A true bonus was gaining the appreciation for the impact that WWII had on the region through Roland's many stories that brought to life the heartbreaks, courage, determination and sacrifice displayed during the war.
The visit to the National Military Museum, formerly curated by Roland, was another bonus adding perspective to my knowledge of what my father experienced as a GI from June 1944 until he returned stateside in December 1945. While my father was not a participant in the Battle of the Bulge, his unit was stationed in France and the many artifacts helped me better understand and appreciate his experience--one he was reluctant to share while alive.
All the while Roland regaled us with tales ranging from the middle ages to present day, Silvia expertly drove us from site to site navigating bicycle races, parking challenges and winding roads. And one could see there was a genuine partnership between Roland and Silvia...
Excellent, outstanding, fabulous, wonderful...should we ever return to the region for a full Battle of the Bulge tour they will be my first call. It is so easy to see why their rating as a team is 5.0. Thank you.

If you want to immerse yourself in the Battle of the Bulge, hire Gaul's Legacy Tours. Roland Gaul, a native of Luxembourg and co-founder of the Battle of the Bulge Museum in Diekirch, will tailor a tour to personalize your interests.
Roland is the expert for the Battle of the Bulge. His all encompassing knowledge will include the major elements of the battle as well as vignettes concerning little known American and civilian heroes. Sylvia Gaul's superb organization and expert driving allows Roland to use the time between numerous stops to answer questions and provide additional information. He is a superb oral historian.
Our four days with Roland and Sylvia were a rewarding and memorable endeavor.

We arranged with Gaul Legacy Tours a one-day tour of the ‘Bulge’ - knowing that there was more to see that we could see in a day. Via email, Roland worked with us to identify our priorities, and created an itinerary especially for us. My interest was that my father had been in the Bulge during the war, and in architecture. My husband’s interest was in tanks and general WW2 history.
Roland picked us up at our hotel in Luxembourg City, and, with our driver Patrick, we saw so much, and learned so much about the region and about the history. We saw Diekirk, Vianden, Clervaux, Bastogne, and Manhey. Roland also stopped at several ‘bonus’ sites for us along the route. Roland’s knowledge was incredible.
I highly reccommend a tour with Gaul’s Legacy Tours!

My family was coming to visit Luxembourg from the US and I wanted to plan a WWII tour for my dad, who is a WWII buff. Roland and Silvia were super easy and helpful to work with, were very eager to plan a tour with us that would suit the whole family (WWII and non-WWII buffs alike) and were especially accommodating concerning dietary restrictions.
Roland was extremely knowledgeable and a great story teller. He knew all the right spots to go to see remnants of the war (foxholes, bunkers, etc.) with all the interesting facts.
We were all highly satisfied with the tour itself. We did two days around the Battle of the Bulge surrounding Luxembourg and were exhausted at the end (in a good way!). We had been given so much knowledge and seen so much and we still cherish the memories and often look at the pictures we took. I would recommend that anyone visiting Luxembourg contact Roland and Silvia to have their own tour planned - it is definitely worth it!

Best tour ever! Silvia and Roland far exceeded my expectations. I had been emailing them for months with information for my tour following my father's footsteps during WW2. They were able to take the information and create a tour that followed the path my father took as part of 3rd Army. It was no easy task because it included a visit to an estate, a fort, and hiking along a mountain trail to a location where my father earned a Silver Star for gallantry in action. Their knowledge of the history of events and the terrain involved was superb. These are just a couple of highlights that took place over a two day period. If you want an excellent tour with two very knowledgeable and dedicated people I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GAUL'S LEGACY TOURS.

Hello again, Glad to learn that you safely made it back home with pleasant memories !. As you had done all those efforts to research your father's WWII footsteps (especially as he received the prestigious Silver Star in action in the German-, French,- Luxembourg borderlands before the "Bulge", during the 3rd US Army's operations in the greater Metz- and Moselle region and during the ensuing Rhineland campaign), it was just a natural and an honor for Silvia and me to get you to those areas you knew from records and newspaper articles of 1944/45. We ourselves had never been to some of those places. It made both of us happy to see how close in mind you and your wife became to your father by walking his footsteps. This is really what we always intend to do: provide a very personal tour based on family legacy and have great people - like you - "relive" their relatives' WWII experiences and realize that they once were part of the greatest generation to help liberate Europe and contribute to victory as American- and allied soldiers. Thank You again for your favorable comments and please keep in touch. Silvia and Roland

If only every tour, and tour guide, delivered like Roland Gaul and his wife and sidekick, Silvia. A friend and I, on our way to a bicycle tour in Germany, flew to Luxembourg hoping to have a Battle of the Bulge experience while briefly in Luxembourg. We contacted the city tour office and they referred us to Roland. From the moment we met Roland and Silvia, we knew we had the real deal. Roland is literally overstuffed with knowledge, data, stories, and intimate details involving every feature of the Battle, the terrain, and the events of late 1944 and early 1945. Our 830-600 day long tour lasted until 830pm (no extra charge) simply because Roland insisted that we learn more, see more, and hear more than the original allotted time allowed. And so we did. His deep passion for his work, and his wife's charm, able driving and management skills (keeping Roland somewhere approximating his time limits is clearly her biggest job), provided us with an experience we will never, ever forget. I am a lawyer and trained to inquire. Throughout the day never did Roland fail to answer any question about anything with less than commanding knowledge. Roland is The Dude. Accept no substitutes. He made impacts on my friend and I in ways we never expected. When i return with my wife, Roland and Silvia will get the call, no doubt about it. I look forward to sharing more time with him and learning ever more about a subject he clearly loves. Jeff Keane, Seattle

Thank You so much for your lovely comments. Silvia and I greatly enjoyed meeting and interacting with you while on our tour. We quickly became aware that you were deeply interested in the subject, eager to find out more about Luxembourg's WWII experience, especially during the "Bulge". Hence, time flies quickly during the tour and never mind (on our side) that we exceeded a "bit" the timing we initially had agreed upon. Again, if both of you were happy -- we are happy! Thank You again for a wonderful experience and day we could spend together. Silvia and Roland.

It’s hard to put into words what a special trip Roland put together for us. He is absolutely accommodating and kind at every turn. We were attempting to cover some meaningful ground in the battle of the bulge and lost kin, while keeping a 7 and 9 year old engaged in the process. Roland was flexible, engaging and creative at every turn. Not to mention possibly the most knowledgeable man in the planet!

Dear Jess and family,
Thank You for your lovely words and rating. For Silvia and me it was important that You and your children, grand-child and great grand-children of were able to visit the grave at the Luxembourg-American cemetery of your dear grandfather and great-grandfather who gave his life on Dec 25, 1944 over Diekirch/Luxembourg, as a member of a B-17 aircraft that crashed here. Stanley Wrubleski is one of those countless American heroes who gave his utmost and who rests in Luxembourg. We can never be grateful enough for his sacrifice and for the one of thousands of others of the "greatest Generation". It was an honor and a pleasure to take you, your husband and children around and also associate you all on a small commemorative ceremony on Nine Eleven 2019 remembering Nine Eleven 1944, when the north of Luxembourg was liberated by US armed forces and when - at the same time - the first American soldiers set foot on mianland Germany. We value that you brought over your small children - they will understand soon and will be proud of their great-grandfather. It is important that the torch of remembrance is passed to the younger generations to ensure that those who died during WWII for our today's freedom and democratic values, will never be forgotten. Thank You Silvia and Roland

Roland and Silvia were in a word OUTSTANDING as they hosted our family in remembrance of the loss of our father/grandfather in the "Battle of the Bulge" as a member of Patton's Third Army in Southern Belgium in late 1944. Their individualized care was clearly evident from our first planning meeting, as they strove to make the experience truly personalized, memorable and highly significant for each member of our family. Roland's unequaled expertise in the field of military history and local culture, coupled with Ms. Silvia's attention to detail to assure our comfort and safe travels were absolutely fantastic and very meaningful to us as a family. The accommodations arranged for us at Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel in Clervaux during our stay were also very clean, comfortable and convenient to our touring purposes! The Gauls' considerate responses regarding schedule flexibility, required in consideration of my elderly parents was also above and beyond anything we expected and I would consider the tour value for the monies expended to be excellent! A truly "Concierge" touring experience!!
We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for anyone's personal and/or family trip to the area! As we told them at departure, we came to connect with a competent tour guide company (which we definitely did...); but we now have FRIENDS as tour guides who just happen to live in Luxembourg!!

Roland and Silvia were the best tour guides that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. They took the information that we sent them and expanded on it exponentially! My brother and I are so grateful to them for enabling us to walk in our Uncle's footsteps in the final days of his life during WWII. Roland has an encyclopedic knowledge of WWI and WWII and the battles fought in France, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg. In addition, they are the loveliest people you could ever hope to meet! After 48 hours together, they are like family!

Thank You, Debby for your lovely and very favorable comments! It was for Silvia and me an equally-sentimental experience and we were both glad to have been able to get you to those areas You always wanted to see, as it is deeply family-related. We were aware that this trip in honor of Your uncle, KIA in Nov 1944 was very important to you. We hope the tour provided a number of answers to open questions and may have contributed to put a range of thoughts to rest. May your uncle RIP - may your family be proud of him: he gave his life to help contribute to liberate Europe and protect the US. You have friends in Luxembourg!.

Roland and his associate Tom were the consummate tour guides. They were prepared, knowledgeable, and as interested as my siblings and I were in where our father had been. They had photos and Powerpoint slides ready to help us see the big picture and where he had fit in. Going to his exact locations was priceless.
