No need to remind the sadness of this last year... the end of the world as we loved it.... uncertainty is still here, I watch old photos of beloved destinations and wonder when and if ever I will see them again.... And our children...
I want to travel again, not destructively and excessively, just to gently travel and wonder at the beauties of this world.
In the meantime, I stopped writing. First about what, secondly, even if niceness would come in small quantities from time to time, who had the mood?
But now I am trying to get out of the hybernation. I might not have the long term determination but let’s try....
Last weekend, we’ve tried a small city just outside Brussels, at the frontière of « Pays Flamande ». Mechelen.
And what a delicious surprise. Ordered, clean, green, peaceful, a moment of tranquility and joy. Walks on the commercial streets, discovery of hidden oasis of inside gardens and small canals. Polite bicyclists who will slow down for you, or negotiate calmly their priority.
Tons of delicious cake shops - the creamy, fluffy, calorious ones ☺️
And then hidden surprising statutes - an owl, a yellow upside man (apparently in the memory of a less than faithful husband) a dance of nymphes. So many moments of Esthetic enjoyment and opportunity for souvenir photos
And than there is the famous magnificent cathedral. A total must especially for lovers of history but also for hopeful souls in search of a miracle, because the church hides an icon of St Vierge maker of miracles. With two full walls covered in marble plaques of recognition and gratitude. I made my wish ...

Se il tempo è bello, il tour può comodamente iniziare dalla stazione che è molto vicina alla piazza centrale. Lungo il tratto che la separa, si incontra la chiesa barocca di San Pietro e Paolo del 1670 dai belli ornamenti lignei tra cui il pulpito e 14 confessionali incassati nelle pareti. Più avanti sosta nella centrale Grote Markt, circondata da costruzioni rinascimentali e barocche. Insistono nella piazza lo Stadhuis del 1320 con il fiammeggiante Palazzo del Gran Consiglio terminato nel 1900 e qualche costruzione del XIII-XIV secolo (casa degli Scabini).La statua in onore di Margherita d’Austria ricorda che Mechelen nel 1473 divenne capitale dei Paedi Bassi e governata dalla illuminata sovrana per circa trent’anni. Ho proseguito il giro entrando nella cattedrale di San Rombaldo dove é esposta la Crocifissione di Van Dyck (1627). Non sono potuto salire allo Skywalk della Torre Campanaria, alta 97 metri e patrimonio unesco, perché non è sempre aperta (informatevi degli orari di apertura). Da lì ho proseguito per l’antica piazza Ihzerenleen (ancora visibili le antiche balaustre in ferro) per raggiungere il magnifico ponte duecentesco sul Dijle. Là inizia la Dijlepad una passerella di 600 metri che corre lungo la sponda del fiume. Incuriosisce, quindi la passeggiata va fatta.
L’arte, nelle sue più varie manifestazioni, è sparsa un po’ ovunque nella cittadina: eccelle come da consuetudine nelle chiese; non vi perdete quella di San Giovanni del 1443 dove è esposto sull’altare maggiore il trittico dell’Adorazione dei Magi di Rubens; altro suo capolavoro, il trittico della Pesca Miracolosa, lo trovate nella chiesa di Nostra Signora al di là della Dijle.
Delle antiche fortificazioni rimane solo la caratteristica porta ogivale dì Bruxelles del XIV secolo. Anche il Grote Begijnhof è patrimonio dell’Unesco; è differente dagli altri perché non è chiuso da cinta muraria ma si sviluppa tra le viuzze, in un insieme di vecchie case a frontoni con torrette. E poi ci sono ancora strade con case antiche, il museo civico, la manifattura reale di arazzi, il museo dell’olocausto, il teatro municipale, la superba residenza di Margherita, la chiesa di nostra signora di Hanswijk, il giardino d’inverno del convento delle Orsoline.
