We cycled from Gelert Road to Burnt River... what a great rail trail. A cool trestle bridge, friendly ATVers, other cyclists... and in good condition.

The trail winds through some beautiful country, but it is ruined by noisy, aggressive ATV drivers, who seriously rough up the trail surface. The trail would be great if used by cyclists and hikers alone, but once ATV season comes around, forget about it.
Gelert Road, which parallels the trail for a good stretch, is perectly acceptbale for road cyclists.

This trail is long which is great but it's also quite bumpy along a large portion (we rode from Haliburton to about Gelert). On the way back to Haliburton, we left the trail and rode on the road that runs parallel to the trail for a bit (there is a nice bike lane) just to get a break from the bumpy ride.

We loved riding through the forest, meadows and marshland for 14 km. A nice smooth ride. Absolutely loved it, will make it a regular outing.

The tourism site describes this as multi use but it isn't really. Rough in spots with large sized gravel that makes walking difficult.i can't imagine cycling unless you have a mountain bike. ATv riders courteous but still kick up lots of different yet and leave a wake of gas fumes.

my wife and I did about 15-17km of these trails. They are of a easy standard, flat level trails for the most part with some sections of flooding. Whether it was to our fault for picking the wrong trails or not but we found them to be very monotonous with long sections without anything to see. Not withstanding there were some gems, a waterfall in particular made the trip more worthwhile. However having done other trails they were far more rewarding for the distance covered.

We did only part between Gelert and Lochlin. Loved surroundin veiw , falls, trees just started to become red. We enjoyed nature and it was not too bad for us that we had to walk our bikes time to time. The trail was too soft and/ or sandy for my road bike ( my husband has a mountain bike, he didn't have problems). It is multi use trail, much more popular with ATVs then bikes. Some yonge ATV drivers didn't care about bikers, they didn't reduce their speed and passed us really too close. But majority were very nice, wave " hi" and tried to reduce the clouds of dust which we had to breath in.

We joined the trail at Kinmount and headed North towards Haliburton. The path was far too soft with sand, gravel, moguls. We rode for 6km but had to turn around as it wasn't getting better. It was very scenic and will eventually be a beautiful trail if it is more suitably groomed for bicycles. We were riding hybrid bikes. Mountain bikes may fair better. Wonderful path for ATVs and snowmobiles.

This is one of the better sections of rail trail. There are fewer road crossings, more wildlife and better forests. Great for a walk, sledding, ATVing etc.

The Rail Trail is a great idea - it's something that is open to anyone to use and goes for miles and miles. It's easily accessed, is flat easy walking for those who want a very unchallenged stroll, and does make good use of a pre-existing feature. However, it's a bit of a boring walk. I like it better for bike, but it can be a bit sandy for that use. I haven't gone far on it, but my spouse has. The time I liked it best was in the winter - oh wait - the public is not allowed to use it in winter. I didn't know this of course, and had to dive out of the way into the snow every time the snowmobiles zoomed at me. Too bad - it's a great winter walk - easy, picturesque, and accessible even in significant snow
