I joined a week long tour of villages surrounding San Cristobal in Chiapas with a small group of individuals who each have a great appreciation for the unique textile traditions, as well as having their own weaving practices. Fascinating! Every day included diverse aspects of each destination, and all of them included warm welcomes and mutual respect cultivated over many years of friendships. Everyone was delightful, and most especially our host and guides. Norma Schaefer and Eric Chavez operate this wonderful business, Oaxaca Cultural Navigator. Gabby Yaz was our brilliant guide, herself from Chiapas and university trained in history. Aside from all this rich immersion in a world I could not possibly encounter on my own, we had a lot of fun together!

I just completed my third textile tour (to Chiapas) with Norma Schafer and Oaxaca Cultural Navigator. In fact, I would not even call it a tour. All of Norma’s trips are intimate and deeply personal experiences. Norma has lived part-time in Teotitlan del Valle (Oaxaca) for years. She is incredibly knowledgeable about textiles and other Mexican artisan traditions, has an abiding love for and appreciation of Mexico’s indigenous cultures, and personally knows all of the incredibly talented artisans and their families we visited. And Eric Chavez, her partner, is a well-known Teotitlan weaver from an equally well-known family of weavers and natural dyers. His experience and extensive knowledge about the weaving traditions and techniques of each community perfectly balanced Norma’s insights.
Each day, our small group visited different communities in the mountains surrounding San Cristobal where we were based. We met with award-winning artisans who demonstrated their weaving and dying practices, shared with us their beautiful creations, and explained how their designs and symbols represent the cosmos, the natural world, and their spiritual beliefs. Many welcomed us into their homes and shared a modest home-cooked meal. We also met a weaver whose creativity and modern adaptations of traditional designs have won him much acclaim in Mexico, as well as in the New York fashion world. In addition, we visited local markets and churches, including the very famous church in Chamula, and had memorable meals in San Cristobal, including one at a restaurant owned by an award-winning “Iron Chef” from Chiapas. It was truly an unforgettable trip thanks to Norma, Eric, and our fabulous local guide, Gaby Yaz. I returned home with an even deeper appreciation for the unique history and natural beauty of Chiapas, as well as the variety, artistry, and technical virtuosity of its weavers -- not to mention the new friends I made during our all-too-short week together.

I love culture and history, I love meeting local people, artists, craftsman and visiting them at their own home. I got it all in this trip! Meeting artists who work on preserving indigenous art of pottery, weaving, embroidery, sewing and jewelry making was inspiring.
I usually do not travel with organized trips but I know that I would have never reached these remote villages on my own. The leaders of the trip being local, knew the area, its culture and traditions and introduced us to an authentic cultural experiences.
The trip was well organized and met the needs of all members in the group.

This is an informative, beautiful trip for textile lovers. We were able to connect and meet with fairly isolated textile cooperatives and communities; learned a ton about indigenous weaving traditions, embroidery and pottery. Each village had artisans who are experts in their craft and are innovative in making their art. Norma and Eric are clearly trusted by all of the people we met.

I've participated in the Oaxaca Navigator's tours three times or more, and I'm thoroughly satisfied with both the owner, Norma, and Elsa's day tours.
So far, I've joined group tours to Chiapas, Costa Chica, and Oaxaca Mixta. What I love about each tour is visiting Indigenous people's homes and workshops, where I can deeply learn about their lives, designs, and culture. Thanks to them, I've grown to love Mexican culture even more, and my impression of Mexico has completely changed. For those who haven't participated, I highly recommend joining. There's so much to learn and be inspired by. Norma, Eric, and his wife Elsa, who I work with, are all incredibly attentive and kind in their navigation.
I join alone, but I’m always excited to meet owner Norma and everyone in the group shares the same preferences and aspirations. I’ve made lifelong friends and met friends I’ve encountered on tours multiple times. That, too, is a highlight for me.

I just finished my 4th trip with Oaxaca Cultural Navigators and I loved it as much as I loved my first trip with them to Puerto Escondido. Norma loves the textiles of Mexico, she loves the artist/weavers, knows where they are and they love her right back. Eric Chavez, her partner, is a weaver who grew up in a family of weavers - his father a Master Weaver. The two of them offer a top notch educational experience into the textiles and crafts of the region. We have traveled long, dusty, bumpy roads to meet some of the most beautiful artisans of Mexico. If that was all we did, it would be worth the trip - but we also see beautiful scenery, eat food prepared for us by the artists in their communities, learn about customs and history and get to hear the artists share how their knowledge has been passed down through generations. I love my time spent with them and have another trip scheduled in 2025.

I have been on a number of trips with Oaxaca Cultural Navigator, beginning in 2015. Every trip is unique, valuable and eye opening-to the beauty, the talent, the artistry and the sacredness of the art itself.
I hold dear the experiences I have had, the friends I have made and what I have learned on each trip.
Norma and Eric have such extensive knowledge not only about the exceptional artists, textiles and each village, but about the people who live there, their history, their families and their day to day lives. Gaby is an added bonus with her deep understanding of the culture, past and present.
Seeing the love these artists and their families have for Norma when she arrives says it all.
Thank you Norma, Eric and Gaby!!!

Exciting, educational, eye-opening, mind-broadening. Those are a few of the words I’ve used to describe this in-depth study tour with extraordinary leaders Norma Schafer, Eric Chávez Santiago (a native of Teotitlán del Valley, Oaxaca) & local tour guide Gaby Yaz.
We started our study in the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas with an introduction at the exquisite textile museum & privately owned business Casa Textil, followed by a private group meeting with healer Sergio Castro who shared his in-depth knowledge of native traje - costume, each with its own symbols & meanings.
Wandering through the streets you see the distinct contrast, yet the mingling, of gringos, locals, & the indigenous people of the mountain villages in a somewhat cosmopolitan city. An unexpected delight.
Over the next few days we visited 6 Maya villages where we were welcomed into private homes for demonstrations, sales opportunities, & often a simple, delicious meal. We visited markets, women’s cooperatives & studios. The opportunity to meet these people, to share their homes & their dreams through the interpretation of our guides was not an ordinary experience. It was an opportunity to truly connect.

I’m a big fan of Oaxaca Cultural Navigator. After going on the Oaxaca Coast textile-focused trip in Feb 2023, I quickly signed up for the “Bucket-List” Monarchs and Michoacan trip in Feb 2024. The reason? Norma Schafer and Eric Chavez Sanchez curate an intellectually stimulating travel itinerary that is a feast for the eyes and food for the soul. Stops include national art treasures, historical sites, cultural museums, and amazing intimate visits with nationally recognized, award- winning artisans in their own homes. Norma has an eye and many friends among the people we meet. To step off the tour van and be welcomed into a courtyard to celebrate the work of noted artists with Norma and Eric is a privilege. The opportunity to support working artists and bring home handmade treasures is exceptional.
Mexico’s culture and history are fascinating and Norma and Eric make a point of infusing educational content about current and historical political events, forces shaping daily lives and communities today. In addition to Eric, who is invaluable as an expert weaver and natural dye master when we visit textile makers, other excellent guides join and enrich the experience, bringing attention to what we would have missed or never known. Norma and Eric are fun to be with. They run a seamless operation and no detail is overlooked. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

I cannot use enough superlatives to convey my enjoyment, learning and satisfaction with the textile tour into villages in the mountains of Oaxaca and southern Guerrero states. The tour leader, Norma works with an amazingly knowledgeable guide, Eric and a very competent and kind translator, Denise. All together, each day of the tour was amazing: hotels clean and convenient; food local and delicious, transportation via van comfortable and safe. At each weaving cooperative or individual home we visited, we met lovely indigenous people who are carrying on ancient traditons related to making their own clothing and woven goods, but also stunning huipiles and other items for sale. We learned about people growing local cotton, watched spinners with drop spindles create threads, then dye (plants, sea snail juices, fruits, bark) and weave threads on backstrap looms. Culturally, the experience exceeded any tour I could have imagined. All 12 tourists were well taken care of and I felt completely safe. My major takeaway was the respectful relationships Norma and staff have established with local artists. Kudos. This will not be my last Oaxaca Cultural Navigator tour.

Hi I am interested in studying the carnival traditions in Oaxaca, mask and figure making. Are there studios which are open to visitors/volunteers ? I have not yet arranged a time to be in Oaxaca.

Please contact the wood carvers and painters in San Martin Tilcajete. They make masks for Carnivale.

Can I get a phone number of anyone who does natural dyes especially indigo please?
Geschreven op 2 mei 2018
Contact Norma directly on her website instead of waiting for her to see your question on Tripadvisor. Beware that many of the locals who offer presentations on using dyes, don't actually use them in their weaving. It's a way to get you in the door.
