This was a bucket list goal for my husband and I. We are pretty athletic and it was challenging. Very steep and rocky but very rewarding. I am so glad we did it.! There are 4 “break” stops on the way up, and the views were amazing at the top. I would recommend to go very early to beat the heat, bring lots of water, maybe some snacks, bug spray and towel. You will sweat a lot!!! Our tour guide Arrol was great, informative and encouraging. He barely broke a sweat, it was impressive! :) Don’t forget cash to tip! A cold Piton beer tasted so good once we got back down. I would highly recommend this hike!

Walked with 3 teenagers having booked via hotel

We have done a number of long walks in the US and the Alps amongst others so have some experience. This one is aptly highlighted as challenging by many commentators due to the path quality with lots of rocks, almost constant ascent and steep and high steps. Its a hard slog and took is 3 and 3/4 hours up and down including stops

We had 2 guides provided - not really necessary for both

First quarter isnt that steep but is quite rocky
To half way is steep but the view here of petit piton is the best on route (note there is little to see on the route as its in the forest)
The 3rd quarter is tough. Steep and good to have the rails to hold
Last quarter is again steep. Top is a small clearing of rocks with views into the interior and to south. No views towards the Piton

Glad we did it. Not sure i would walk it again due to the lack of inspiring views

My husband and I really enjoyed this hike. It’s challenging but definitely do-able. Our guide, Abigail, was amazing!! The cost to complete this hike is $50 pp and takes about 3-5 hours to complete. The views were great and we definitely felt accomplished after completing it. They have 4 break areas throughout the hike if you need to rest or eat a snack which was nice. I would recommend to go early (we got there around 7) to beat the heat.

My review will start out the same as many of the others, go early and bring plenty of water! My husband and I are in pretty good hiking shape, we did this in about three hours and 40 minutes. I did not use a hiking pole, and I did not miss it as often on the way up, I was using my hands to climb boulders or hold onto railings. Similar experience on the way down. We left at 8:15 in the morning and I’m glad we didn’t go any later than that, the people on their way up a couple hours later looked quite overheated. Some reviews had said the view from the top was not that impressive, but they were quite nice! I will say if you’re not up for this challenge, the Tet Paul, nature trail had magnificent views for much less effort, time and cost.

This was NOT an easy hike, so be forewarned. We wanted a challenge and got one - my wife and I are in our early 40s and in pretty good shape and this mountain kicked our butt pretty good. We unfortunately had a hazy/cloudy day so didn't get the views but the tour is professionally run and the guides are knowledgeable and friendly.

I would HIGHLY recommend hiking the Gros Piton if you are physically able to. It was a difficult hike (definitely rocky and quite steep), but it was an unbelievable view and experience. Took our group about 4 hours in total for almost 5 miles round trip, with more time required to descend than to get up the mountain.

Also, you can rent poles for $10 at the start of the hike. This was NECESSARY for me due to a history of ankle injury/instability and ended up being helpful for my husband, whose hiking boots actually broke on the trail (soles came off) and left him essentially descending the mountain in slippers. Would for sure recommend ankle support or hiking boots for this, and be aware that your shoes will probably get muddy!

Make sure to bring enough money to tip the guides!! They send you with a group of four and they are mostly all young people from the small village at the base of the mountain. They were all super spirited and unbelievably adept at the hike; we had a great time joking with them about how slow we were going and hearing their stories about other hikers. We didn't know there would be as many of them or we would have brought more than $30.

This is not for the faint hearted! I wouldn’t call it a hike. It’s a lot of clambering over wet, slippy rocks and steep uneven terrain. We are in our 30s and pretty fit and active. My husband is a keen hiker and used to this terrain and he said it was a pretty tough pursuit. Going up is harder physically but coming down is really sketchy and pretty risky I felt. I have no idea what the procedure would be if there were to be an injury or accident. They make you sign a waiver before you begin releasing the company (Soufriere regional development foundation) of any responsibility for injury or death. Which put me on edge from the start 😂

It’s an amazing experience to do and I’m glad we did it but what let it down was the tour guide. We had Coreen. She seemed really disinterested and disengaged. She walked very far ahead of us the whole time and said maybe a few words to us the whole trip. The tour guides talked a lot to each other, which is completely fine but we would have like her to engage in a bit of convo with us or at least check in with us a bit more? We tried to engage in conversation but we mostly got shut down with one word answers 😂. I don’t expect every tour guide to be the jolliest people on the island and I don’t mind that she wasn’t talkative, but I do mind that she really didn’t seem to have much consideration for our safety. We felt like a bit of an inconvenience.
All we would have like would’ve been if she’d at least stay closer to use and actually guide us and help with footings and the climbing.
From reading other reviews, this seems to be a common experience with the tour guides. It was a lot of money for not a lot of guiding. We don’t mind supporting the community and the area of beauty, but we often felt like the tour guide may as well have not been there.

The views at the top were okay but we’ve seen nicer views else where on the island to be honest. I think ignorance was bliss and if we had a crystal ball to see how we would have found it, we wouldn’t have done it.

I think just be prepared for what you read in the reviews and the risks.

Side note: our driver Danny boy and John Wayne who took us there and back and a car tour were fantastic. So friendly and knowledgable. The tour with them was the best bit 😂

I had an excellent time hiking the Gros Piton trail. My tour guide, Cameron, was absolutely amazing. He provided lots of information about the plants, area, history, and St Lucian life while on hiking through the forest and up Gros Piton. The views were amazing and it was a great hike. If you are looking for a moderate to difficult hike, this is a great one to complete. If you try it and you think it is difficult there is a halfway point to stop at while the group continues up. Not a bad place to stop. It still has panoramic views of Saint Lucia.

This is a moderate to difficult hike. Don't attempt it if you don't have a baseline level of fitness or have mobility limitations. There are next to no flat stretches or paved parts, you walk uphill the entire time, almost exclusively on rocks and roots. The trail has four sections, the third and fourth one are particularly steep. I'm moderately fit and do hike here and there, and this was a tough one. I did it in running shoes, which was fine as the trail was dry. After rain, only do this in proper hiking shoes, if at all. The way down isn't necessarily easier, partly because by then, your legs will feel like jello - go slow and walk carefully, some parts you may need to slide or go backwards. They offer to rent a walking stick - I didn't take one and was glad I didn't. On the way up, it would have been a nuisance, on the way down, it was easier to crouch as low as possible to make it past certain parts. Quite frankly, this is more a hike to challenge yourself physically, while you can get the same views you can get elsewhere without having to hike. Halfway up you have a nice view of Petit Piton, all the way up you can see the Southern part of St Lucia and sometimes on clear days other islands. Other than that, there's very little views along the way and you're basically focused on not tripping anyway. Most of the hike is shaded to a degree, but try to start early before 8am anyway. A guide is mandatory (50US$), but I found mine to do quite little guiding - he walked ahead a fair bit most of the time, I'm not even sure he really knew where I was or if I was ok. I prefer quiet hikes so appreciated the lack of narration, but it made me wonder if someone less experienced and less fit would get the same limited attention as I did. I'm sure this is luck of the draw, other guides seemed more engaged. I did the hike up in about 1 hour 50 including brief breaks after each section, the way down in 1 hour 20 without any breaks. It's best to assume this hike will take 2-3 hours up and about 2 down though. Don't rush it and be careful. They tell you to bring 1.5l of water, I recommend you bring quite a bit more - you will sweat like crazy and the risk of dehydration is real. I drank about 2.5l of water plus a Gatorade right after the hike. It's best to also bring a couple of granola bars or some salty snacks.

I am a moderately experience hiker and thought I would have no trouble with this hike. It was actually much more challenging than I expected. The trail has very few flat sections where you can catch your breath and the extreme heat and humidity make it even more challenging. The steps on the trail are often pretty steep (18" plus) and the surface can be slippery so you need to pay attention to every step.

I was very glad that I did it, but I should have been training harder in preparation. The heat really affected me and I felt winded and way overheated for the first half of the trail (it gets cooler as you gain altitude). As background info, I exercise every day (yoga, pilates, walking) and have done lots of hikes in cooler climates, but I think it would have been easier for me if I had trained by running hills or on a treadmill at an incline. My husband is a runner and did much better than me on the way up, but his knees and hamstrings took a beating going down (going down was easier for me due to regular yoga).

The trail itself is amazing and the view is breathtaking. I would urge anyone to do this hike, but do yourself a favour and train in advance. I would say make sure you can run at least 5km and do some hill training too. You need good hiking boots. People do wear runners, but the rocks are slippery and you're just asking for trouble without proper footwear. My boots were covered in scratches after this hike but my feet were fine.

I'd say the guides vary. You might need to be a bit assertive about setting your own pace. Ours took off way too fast and I ran into trouble as a consequence, but when I talked to her at the halfway point she was understanding and slowed down. It took us 5.5 hours to do the whole hike, but I needed to rest quite a few times on the way up.

On that note, make sure you tip your guide. They do not get paid unless they have customers (they don't get a salary) and this is a very hard way to make a living. Be assertive if you need to about the pace you want, and feel free to ask questions, etc. but pay them for their time and trouble. Our guide was a little brusque to start, but she was actually very helpful once we started chatting. Treat them respectfully and you will have a better experience. I have to say I was disgusted by a couple staying at Sugar Beach who didn't tip their guide at all - if you can afford a 5-star resort, you can afford a tip for people who are scratching out a living doing a very hard job.

In conclusion, this is a hard climb. Do the necessary preparation and you will have an amazing experience.
