This was the final activity, on our itinerary, whilst on this mini break based in Tintern. After lunch in nearby Coleford we journeyed back to Tintern to visit this vineyard. We couldn’t visit earlier in our stay because the winery currently doesn’t open on Tuesday or Wednesday (we had arrived here on the Tuesday). We had not arranged our visit in advance, and arrived just after 14:00.

Parking here is very restricted; the access road is narrow and has a couple of blind corners. The access road is clearly marked, and is on the right hand side of The Wye Valley Hotel on the A466.

We parked-up and walked the short distance to the visitor reception and shop, where we met proprietress, who asked if we wanted to tour. As it was Welsh Wine Week the self-conducted tour was free, and we were provided with directions to the actual vineyard where vines are grown. This wasn’t far and it wasn’t an arduous walk (that ‘pleasure’ was to come). We were told that Dave; the viniculturist, would be in the vineyard. Dave is responsible for tending to the vines; ensuring that they are healthy and produce the best yield at harvest. He then blends the various grape varieties into the wine.

Dave was about to spray vines, and asked us to maintain a respectful distance as we walked around the vineyard. There were chemicals in the spray that could harm us if we came into too much contact. There was no danger because he would also avoid coming close to our route, plus there was no breeze to carry the spray.

The 17 varieties of vine grown here were planted in neat rows, and it was possible to see the beginnings of the bunches of grapes on many of the vines. Each plot of wine was marked with its variety and information about the growing conditions and the grape produced. A clearly signposted route led us up and across the vineyard. It was very steep here, and a very warm afternoon, but the views of Tintern village and the Wye River were spectacular. Info about the vineyard and some of the vinicultural process were described on more printed signs dotted around.

After about 20 minutes of walking in the vineyard we returned to the visitor reception and shop. We discussed the merits of various wines and, in particular, the blends that result in the wine produced here. We had a small tasting of a still white wine which was very pleasant. We tasted a red but we do not drink red wine. The sparking wine couldn’t be sampled of course.

We purchased two bottles of the splendid still Bacchus 2019 (Bronze medal) and a bottle of the sparkling Dathliad Rose (Silver medal).

We then set off for the 45 minute journey to home, in the knowledge that if we want to buy more wine, we can get here with ease.

An interesting visit with spectacular views providing you embrace the climb.

We enjoyed our time at the vineyard. Most of the grapes were harvested but some red ones remained. It is on a hill, but one is rewarded with great views of Tintern. We visited with the owner, drank some wine, bought a bottle.

We did the self guided tour on arrival. Knowledgeable proprietors who explained carefully the types of vine and vineyard layout. Steep paths but worth it. We were charged £2.50 each for the tour but felt it worthwhile with useful history and explanations. Wine tasting of the different grades ensued. Big choice but we came away with the Pinot Noir rose which we found very palatable. Worth going!😊

What an absolute delight. It was a pleasure to pay the small amount of £2.50 for a walk around the vineyard. Lots of useful information to read as you wander around taking in the beautiful views as you do so. There is no rush as you can take as long as you wish. Returned back to the shop where we had a great wine tasting session. I have never been a fan of rosé wines until now! Wow, it was excellent. As were the red and the whites. The wines are also really well priced for the quality and care which a small family run business obviously put into making it. We will return very soon.

We were staying in the Wye Valley Hotel next door so wandered up the lane to visit. We went on the £2.50 self guided tour to the very top of the vineyard where we had fantastic views across the valley. The Vineyard was well laid out with come interesting notice boards to tell you about the grapes etc. After the tour we stopped in the shop where we had wine tasting and bought some mead. The prices were reasonable compared to many English vineyards I have visited. A pleasant way to spend 30 -60 mins

So glad we came across this place. The walk was a very steep climb in the heat, but well worth it for the views and to read all about the wines. Afterwards, we had a tasting of a variety of the wines and walked away very happy customers after purchasing a few bottles, which are very pleasing indeed!
