The Alluvial Fan is the result of the failure of the Lawn Lake Dam which failed in 1982 and sent 200 million gallons of water down to flood both the Park and nearby Estes Park township. What is left today is a large field of rocks & boulders spread in a fan shape down the side of the hill and a waterfall serving the river/creek below. Easily reached in a short trail from the carpark below.

This trail is one way with a parking lot at either side. It is fairly short and level so even handicapped people can enjoy it. Parking can be difficult although the lot is a good size. A flood had happened here and 3 campers died.

This is such an interesting and beautiful site in Rocky Mountain National Park. There are several informational plaques telling about it. It is highly accessible for those with handicaps, including a nice waterfall view, which is nice. The various rock formations are really interesting. There is also a nice picnic area next to the west parking lot.

Take the Old Fall River Road; the first part (from park entrance) is two-way, and you can get to the Alluvila Fan, and go back. However highly recommend to continue on the one-way dirt road (Old Fall River Rd.) it gives you more appreciation how people 100 years ago traveled.

A hat and sunglasses are all you need for this paved trail that shows visitors the power of previous floods. Reading up on the area before you arrive will help put the limited information on the posted plaques into perspective. Park at the second (upper) lot if you want a ramp instead of stairs from the parking areas.

Old Fall River Road starts just after the Alluvial Fan area where there are rocks and stones from the rush of cascading water released by a failed upstream dam. A water fall offers opportunities for brave visitors to slide down. There are two entrances--east and west. they seem to. be about the same leading equally to the same location. You can see a view of the Alluvial Fan from Rainbow Curve on the Trail Ridge Road.

We came in early June and there was a lot of water over the Alluvial Fan. The hike is easy from either parking area with a wide, smooth path. On our second trip to the falls, we were greeted by a moose who decided to cross the stream to eat the leaves on the other side.

Beautiful spot. The rocks and waterfall. Easy walking path. We saw a moose in the parking lot grazing. Close to Sheep Lakes so you can go right from one spot to the other.

Great scrambling above the initial pool. Spent about 1-2 hours at the site. Really enjoyed the views up and down.

We went early in the morning for photography. The walk is easy and short from either parking lot. Make sure to read the signs at the overlook explaining the fan. There is a nice picnic area from the parking lot. We saw elk and Steller’s Jays in the falls picnic area. From the lot you can walk Old Fall River Road as far as you’d like to go. On that walk we saw a large herd of elk and Magpies.
What we wish visitors would remember is to respect the park. We saw a woman decide to take her dog out for a bathroom break on the rocks along the path to the falls. Fortunately, a ranger was in the area and quickly approached her and immediately walked her and her dog to the car.

Is Endowvalley road which cuts from highway 34 one way? i read somewhere that this road then becomes old fall river road and is one way and also is this a paved road?

Hi all,
I am planning to go the Alluvian Fan next week during our visit to RMNP. I am planning to reach there late afternoon, around 5 pm with a 3 yrs old. Is it a good time to go there? Also, from the park map I think it is not a one way drive for Old River Fall Road but when I ask the direction I google map for way back to Estes Park it is asking me to drive all the way Old River Fall Road then returning by Trail Ridge/34/36. Also, the ORFR is not opened yet I think.
Please let me know if I can return to Estes Park.
Thanks.

Endovalley Road to the Alluvial Fan from highway 34 is a two way road and you can backtrack to highway 34 after visiting the Alluvial Fan. It is a google maps error that indicates you must travel Old Fall River Road to get back to highway 34. We actually discussed this on the TA Rocky Mountain National Park travel forum back in early November when you were planning this trip. If you want to look back, click on your screen name and all your posts on TA will come up.

Is the map on tripadvisor accurate as to where the Alluvial fan is located? It seems like after researching the Alluvial fan is located in a completely different place.

If you enter the Fall River Entrance to RMNP, the Alluvial Fan is about 3 miles from this entrance. You will see the right hand turn off highway 34 onto Endovalley Road. There is a sign. You can download the official RMNP map on the park's website. You will see the Alluvial Fan on the map.

Can I return to EstesPark from Alluvial Fan parking lot directly or I need to complete the old Fall River Road following the Trail Ridge Road?

It's a short drive back to Estes Park, passing the Fall River Visitor Center on your way.

That depends on what you mean by accessible. The paved trails that led from the east and west parking lots to the waterfall are no longer there. The road has been repaired. While some of the flood debris between the road and what remains of the waterfall has been removed, the footing through this area is tricky as you must maneuver around downed tree trunks and rocks and boulders. The footing on the south side of the road (not the waterfall side) is a little better. If you saw this area before the September 2013 flood, the change is very dramatic and not for the better. For those of us who have such great memories of the Alluvial Fan before, it is hard to appreciate it as much now.
