The hike was beautiful. There was still a lot of snow on the hike. We had hiking shoes but no spikes which probably would have helped at the steep parts, but it was still very doable without them. There are so many amazing views as you get further up the mountain. Once we were there, it was just so peaceful and a great spot.

It was incredibly disappointing that our hike was totally encapsulated in fog. I would have loved to see the views of the mountains across the alpine lakes. With that said the lake was an interesting view in the fog. Despite so many people on the trail, the fog really made you feel you had the mountain to yourself. Dream lake is a nice climb from Bear Lake and even Nymph Lake. The walk over the streams between the lakes was nice as this was also the only really views we get of the lakes and surroundings. We turned around at the west end of Dream Lake as it did not seem worth the effort to go to Emerald Lake when you could only see 50 feet ahead. Still I am glad we made the trek to Dream Lake.

Hiked this in July 2022 with my wife and five small children (aged 10 years down to 4 months). It was spectacular and a highlight of our month long roadtrip from New Jersey to Colorado and back.

What worked super well for us:

- Camped at Glacier Basin campground for a week, which meant we did NOT need a timed entry ticket for the trails in the Bear Mountain corridor.

- Camped in the park, which helped us avoid the absolute insane lines to get into the park.

- Camping near the trailhead helped us to get a super early start the two days we hiked in this part of the park, as we could walk across the street to the bus area and get right onto a bus to the Bear Lake trailhead. You can also take a bus from the campground itself, but it won't go directly across the street to the hiker shuttles.

- A super early start helped us avoid the worst of the crowds, as this stretch of trail is SUPER popular for very good reasons. It also helped us take our time going uphill. There were plenty of nice spots to give the kids a break to breathe (just kidding, it was to give the adults a chance to breathe) and our 3 year old actually made it all the way up to Dream Lake under his own steam, a relief to his dad's back and lungs.

- We brought long sleeved warm layers, even though it was July. This was good, because it was super windy at Dream Lake, and we were glad that we had them so that we could eat a snack there and take time to admire the views, instead of rushing back down to get out of the wind.

- We started right up to Dream Lake instead of getting distracted by Bear Lake. We did Bear Lake after we came back down, which was very pretty, then headed over toward Bierstadt Lake for about a 7 mile hike. The trails over to Bierstadt Lake were MUCH emptier than the trail to Dream Lake, and going the direction we did put us downhill more than uphill, which was nice for the kids (aka, the adults who couldn't breathe).

What didn't work super well:

- Even with our early start, the tail end of our hike saw us get caught in the daily afternoon storm because we just didn't move that fast between the views and the kids. Going down the zillion switchbacks from Bierstadt Lake to the shuttle bus while getting poured on (we did have our rain suits, thankfully) wasn't ideal, but at least we were part way down already when the rain started. I'm REALLY glad we got such an early start so that we didn't end up in the storm for a much longer stretch.

Excellent hike with two senior citizens and two young kids in tow. Plenty of spots to stop and catch your breath on the way up. Highlight of our visit to the park that day!

I’m not an experienced hiker, and this hike was just the right amount of challenging and rewarding for me. This is the second to last stop on a chain of lakes hike in RMNP that starts at Bear Lake. It requires a decent amount of stamina but it’s a beautiful and rewarding hike. I highly recommend bringing water and a snack to enjoy at the lake before making the hike back because you’ll burn a ton of calories on the way up and arrive hungry for more than the gorgeous views. In my opinion this hike is suitable for most ages. Plan on spending 2-4 hours on this hike depending on the speed and number of stops you decide on. Also, be aware that you need park reservations to get into RMNP and also that you need special reservations for this area because it’s so popular.

This is the middle lake in the Emerald Lake Trail triad. It is gorgeous, clear water (you can see fish ) and very scenic — great views of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain. It is also very easy to get to — 1.1 miles on the trail with 425 feet of elevation rise. We hiked in the morning and the lake and the train near were very crowded — tons of people taking selfies and group pics. It did not get better on our way back from Emerald Lake, the final lake, which was 0.7 miles away up the trail.

Easy hike and such beautiful views! Lots of people even when arriving early in the morning. If you’re not used to the altitude you will feel it a bit more.

Gorgeous and peaceful little lake. The water is very calm, and you can see fish swimming around.

Only accessible by hiking. It’s about a mile to get to. Quite a few steps.

When I arrived at the Bear Lake trailhead at 7:30, there was plenty of parking and just a few other people on the trail. The hike to Dream Lake is relatively short at just 1 mile, but at close to 10,000 feet, it can be a little tough.

Once you get to the lake, you're rewarded with a spectacular view of Hallett Peak and Tyndall Gorge. There are also a couple nice cascades you can stop at on the way up or down. Truly a must-do when in Rocky Mountain National Park.

We had walked around the lakes in RMNP, but never considered the hiking trails. Taking the trail up to Dream Lake was above and beyond our expectations. It was so beautiful. We will be doing a lot more exploring "off road" from now on!
