Such a beautiful Castle and Garden! We enjoyed our tour greatly, learning much about the history of this grand home and witnessing the masterpieces of trade that made this place. The gardens were lush and so beautifully maintained. We found this to be far superior to Butchart!

Hatley Castle is in a lovely area and literally on university grounds. We opted to enjoy the surrounding area of the castle, including the vista from the water's edge. From there you can see the snow-capped mountains in the distance on the mainland. Many photographers and bird watchers appeared to be visiting, as well.

Awesome place to see. Lot's of Canadian history. The one hour tour was only 20.00. The guide was very knowledgeable about the history. If you love castle's like I do this is a must see one.

I am a photographer. After visiting many of the places to see in the Victoria area (2 castles, 2 cathedrals, Buchart, Canada's oldest Chinatown, an Island etc). The highlight of the trip was the Hatley Castle. After showing all my pictures to two other photographers it was unanimous, the Hatley won. Why? Artistically, from the elaborate stone crafted walls to the sculptured hedgerows, to other architecture, statues, Italian, Japanese and rose gardens, the overall feeling was pleasant. I hesitantly went to the Hatley Castle (reviews) but so glad I went!

Grounds are beautiful, tour a bit underwhelming, and only on the first floor. But my main problem was the bewildering lack of signage. The castle was difficult to find, since there were no signs on the streets to indicate where to turn. Then you meander through a university campus, with no signage to indicate where the castle actually is. When we finally found the parking lot, it was not clear that we needed to pay, but a man told us and showed us where to buy tickets. Then we got to the castle, but couldn't figure out where the tour was. By the time we found the appropriate door, it was too late to buy tickets. The door wasn't marked to indicate that this was where you enter for tours, and there are several doors on the building. Ticket booth was also hard to find, in a little tucked-away spot on the side of the castle. We're in our 70s and have toured many historical sites, and this was hands down the most frustrating. Problems would be easily corrected with helpful signs to indicate the proper procedures. The cafe was another anomaly. A simple sign pointing off in the distance indicating the cafe was in Grants Building. Where or where is that? No map, you're just supposed to know. Weird. Best part was definitely the absolutely lovely gardens, but even that was odd- no sign to direct you to the Japanese garden, which we stumbled upon. Just a strange place!

Most uninspiring. This castle looks grand from the outside and is definitely a work of art, showcasing fine detail within, and a beautiful story taking you back in time.
However, whilst the castle has 40 rooms. The $24 tour and $6 for parking ($2/hr) gives you access to 4 of those rooms. Very expensive and underwhelming. The tour saw us stand outside the front doors of the castle for 30minutes before we entered. Once inside, we were there for 20-25 minutes before being given 5-10minues in the museum. Not enough time to get through all of the documents within the museum, but more enjoyable than the tour itself.

The gardens were overgrown, giving it more of a cottage garden feel and there was very little in bloom. I suspect in spring the gardens would be more inviting.

The map of the site is quite poor, and not easy to use as a guide. Definitely needs a revamp.

If you plan to visit I suspect spring may be the best time and would be worth checking if there is a function on as this reduses your access to the site but not the entry fee.

We loved this castle. The parking is paid here so make sure you consider that. The surrounding gardens are so pretty and free to view. You can also go inside and pay for a tour! We didn’t do that but personally still loved just exploring the gardens. It’s an easy walk around! It was cool how x-men was filmed here!

Stunning buildings, and extremely well-arranged and well-maintained grounds, with benches facing the lagoon in some places and others facing the scenery of the park. Geese and peacocks strut around freely, and overall, one can feel an incredibly relaxing air of stately tranquility. The Japanese garden was especially verdant, and it was arranged to show its scenes only as one walked along its paths, the arched bridge and "babbling brook' perfect compliments to the feeling of contemplation induced by the abundance of green. The lagoon in the distance, with mountain peaks at the far side, also adds to the "one with nature" feel that permeates this beautiful park.

Relaxing spot with a beautiful castle (where some of the X Men movies were filmed). Peacocks roam the grounds freely. Costs $2.00 per hour to park.

Hatley Castle was built in 1908 for the lieutenant governor of BC – and former Premier – James Dunsmuir. He’d purchased the property in 1906 and commissioned the building of a countryside mansion in the “Scottish baronial style.” In this regard, the structure is very reminiscent of classic Scottish castles. Viewing the castle from the outside, it’s ornate stone masonry work, extensive use of battlements and elaborate gardens hint at the elegant lifestyle that flourished during this era in British Columbia. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that Dunsmuir was one of BC’s richest politicians, too!

In any event, my partner and I drove out to Colwood to view this early 20th century castle. It’s surprising to me that, even though I used to frequent the Langford/Colwood area with some regularity in the past, I’d never stopped to visit this special place. It’s funny because this place was practically at my doorstep!

When we arrived, the clouds were quite dark and angry looking; the wind was picking up and it was clear rain wasn’t too far away. Despite the deteriorating weather, Hatley Castle and its grounds were still quite lovely. The bright autumn colours served to contrast against the grey skies.

We only spent about half an hour wandering the grounds. It would’ve been nice to explore the interior of Hatley Castle, but it appears as though tours have yet to resume (I wonder if they ever will?). Still, it was neat to be in an area rife with social, political, cultural and military history. I mean, come on, parts of DEADPOOL and THE BOY were filmed here. How cool is that?

Anyway, from a touristy perspective, would I make a special trip out to Colwood just to visit Hatley Castle? Probably not; however, if you’re in the area – or passing through, as we were – I’d definitely take the time to view this handsome castle turned educational institution and its associated grounds.
