A little gem
jun. 2021
A wonderful little croft retained as far as possible as it would have been during Mary Ann's occupation. The lady guides were all so enthusiastic and knowledgeable it was an absolute joy to visit. We only found it because as we arrived at the Castle of Mey it was closing at 3.00pm and we saw a small sign about Mary Ann's cottage. Very please we went to have a look

A gem
aug. 2019
The story of Mary Ann's life and family reveals itself beautifully, thanks to the Croft, its original contents and the infectious enthusiasm and knowledge of the guides. Allow more time than you think, about 90 minutes. And make sure you have cash with you to pay the modest entrance fee. Well worth a detour.

Well Worth a Visit

Really enjoyed our visit here while in the area on holiday. Didn’t expect such a in-depth guide to crofting life. The volunteer guides were so knowledgeable about Mary-Anne’s life and so nice to see the cottage with all the original family belongings.

Interesting to see how this family lived and the changes to the croft through time.I think it was the distance they had to go to get water that struck me most. The guides added to the experience.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a charming place, full of history about how they lived in the Croft. The volunteers that take you round are enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about life in a Croft. Definitely worth a visit.

This croft is well worth a visit. The guides are extremely knowledgeable about Mary Ann's life in the croft and the items on display. The visit took an hour and a half and we were engrossed. We are looking forward to tasting the home made rhubarb jam when we get home. Thoroughly recommended.

Hidden Treasure well worth a visit

This small museum is an excellent visit. Margaret and Donald McKay, Sheena and the team of devoted volunteers who keep this wonderful place alive make the visit very special. Their enthusiasm shines through, because many of them knew Mary Ann and keep her legacy going through her interesting crofting home. You can also purchase delicious home made jams and gifts which also helps support this local museum. A little off the beaten track on the outskirts of Thurso it is worth ,making the detour to learn about life, work and the sociail life of this incredible lady and her family. Enjoy!.

Visited here while we were staying at Dunnet head caravan park. It's a little gem. People in charge were very friendly an informative. The whole history of the house is very interesting. Everything is so well kept and you felt you were stepping back in time.

Really interesting and very knowledgeable guides

Loved visiting this place - enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable volunteers shared lots of information and gave us fascinating insight into the tough lives of the crofters. We stayed far longer than expected, allow a good hour to hour and a half as there's lots to hear about and look at.
The cottage is only open 2 - 4.30pm daily (except Tuesdays during the summer when it opens at 10).
