My sister and I took the Suibokuga Class (Japanese brush & ink painting). I really enjoyed the experience, our teacher was very patient - teaching us the different brush strokes required.

The afternoon flew by and suddenly it was time to paint our bamboo master piece on our shikishi a gold rimmed canvas. Nishimura Sensei translated our names so we could sign our work.

I would recommend this class, release your inner artist :)

The gallery is lovely and we were able to purchase some original pieces of Japanese art.

The great thing about the Momiji Gallery is that it showcases local artists. Being an artist myself, I always like to see what people are doing when I visit a new place, and a ski resort isn't usually the place to go looking. But this gallery is right in the village.
The Niseko landscape is so beautiful, it wasn't surprising to see that much of the work was landscape. Good for me, as that's what I do. There were also woodblocks, and silk paintings etc. I really liked the mix of contemporary work and the traditional. There were also really good examples of ceramics and Japanese antiques. Judging by the prices, they were the real thing.

While in Niseko I took and afternoon off skiing and did a class at the Momiji gallery. The class took us through the different techniques of brush and ink painting. While language was limited the instructor was able to demonstrate the techniques well. The small class size was an added advantage with the instructor able to give us plenty of 1:1 time. I came away with a great piece of art and a thirst for more. Cannot wait till next trip to book more.

I took an afternoon calligraphy class while in Niseko, taking a break from skiing after a fall. The class went for two hours and was very relaxing. The teacher was fantastic and patient with my big brush strokes! At the end of the class we chose a symbol to put on special cardboard to take home as a souvenir, and enjoyed lovely green tea. The Momiji Gallery owner, Margot, is very passionate about Japanese culture and her gallery is a fabulous mix of contemporary artists and interesting historical pieces, some of which are for sale. A must do if you want a break from the slopes!

I did ALL the activities on offer....Tea Ceremony and Kimono Dressing, Calligraphy and Brush and Ink Painting. Just terrific. The owner of the Momiji gallery is passionate about all things Japanese and she has succeeded in finding friendly and talented local people who present activities which are gentle, engaging and instructional. Classes are small, personal and hands on. You could feel the agitation and anxiety dissolve as people relaxed and had a go. Language not a problem, you got the idea, the brush stroke, the movement.
I bought some ink and brushes home (get them at the gallery:cheap) and am enjoying these practices since returning to Australia.

My sister and I took one of the Calligraphy classes at Momiji, and I gotta say it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The instructor was very friendly and helpful, she provided clear demonstrations on how to write particular Kanji and gave us ample time to practise. She even made us some tea while we were honing our brush stroke technique! Highly recommended.

Do yourself a favour and go to the Niseko Cultural school . I participated in the TEA CEREMONY and KIMONO DRESSING - such pleasure!
A friend took part in the BRUSH and INK PAINTING- he came out beaming with his achievements!
It is also extremely enticing to open the wallet in the Momiji Gallery on entry!

My 13 yo daughter and I enjoyed some Japanese culture by learning Ink Calligraphy Kanji writing at the Momiji Cultural school in Niseko. Our Japanese instructor was very clear with her demonstrations and quite patient as we tried our best to learn this unique art. Class size was small - 6 people, allowing for easy communication to flow in the room. The atmosphere was relaxed and calm. We were quite proud of our end result produced on a hard white paperboard with gold trim and stamped with school's own red inkan (not sure of spelling).

I recently took 2 classes at the Momiji Cultural School. Both were excellent, and very good value.
Both teachers were very talented, and demonstrated the art of calligraphy and ink painting with great skill. Nice to learn more about Japanese culture.

I took a class in Japanese Caligraphy. 4 in the class, with a skilled Japanese tutor, who demonstrated, explained the reasoning , and then we practiced on our own. The 2 hour class cost y4000, and was well worth it. As well as quality materials, we all got to take home a gold-edged display board with a piece of our own work. I loved it! You can also do cooking, art, tours, tea-ceremony and kimono dressing. Learn something about Japan, as well as great skiing.
