Had a group visit last weekend with our local history research group. Very interesting tour from an extremely entertaining guide and tea and lovely home made cakes afterwards ! Really enjoyable and good value. Well worth going !

Visited this week and had a guided tour. Such an interesting tour by a wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly guide who really made it come alive. Due to Covid restrictions we could not see much of the inside of the buildings, but the guide more than made up for it with her knowledge and anecdotes. Beautiful buildings steeped in history, a wonderfully relaxing setting, sweeping garden views, an enclosed knot garden, and tea and biscuits with the two lovely tour guides. Would highly recommend.

Visited this site recently and have to say that it’s a wonderful site and the tour guide was both informative and interesting as well as being very helpful. Took us through the history of the site and showed us as much as she was able as some parts are still subject to Covid restrictions but it was still really good value for money. Would have paid the price just for the knot garden which was a magical place. Would definitely recommend.

We visited Buckden Towers this week, for obvious reasons the inside of the buildings were closed, however the gardens and the knowledge of our tour guide was brilliant. It has so much history attributed to it. We had a lovely evening. Thank you.

Went to visit Buckden Towers as it said on line that it was open but it WAS NOT. Surely someone could put a message on line saying it was closed due to covid………….. even the garden required a key to visit and looked unkept. I believe the site is run by volunteers but even volunteers could work in the gardens. Extremely disappointed after travelling from Lincolnshire.

My wife and I visited here during the Heritage Open weekends which are nationally held every September. Buckden Towers consists of a series of buildings which date from Tudor times up to the Twentieth Century. We were treated to a guided tour of some of the buildings. Our guide explained that site was originally built for the Bishops of Lincoln and that over the years many monarchs (including Henry VIII) visited the site. After the tour we had an excellent slice of cake and a cup of tea in the little tea shop. We also explored the "knot" garden within the grounds. Please note Buckden Towers is not open all year round and perhaps the best time to visit would be during the Heritage Weekends in September each year

A great place for a meeting - welcomed and cared for. Plenty of parking and a quiet, reflective place to be and plan.

A great little walk around the grounds in the sunshine. Just off the A1 and lovely pubs and hotels around.

The A1 thunders past Buckden but you would not know it when you walk around the historic town. We visited Buckden Towers which is about 25 miles from our home as part of a day out. Buckden Towers is a private property but they are happy for you to wander around the grounds. We were lucky to visit on a Tuesday when the gardens are open. The volunteer gardeners were most welcoming and were happy to talk about the gardens and plants. Take the time to wander around the town looking at the buildings. There are plenty of traditional hotels for a meal and drinks.

The village of Buckden now seems rather sleepy in rural Cambridgeshire, as the A1 rushes past a few miles to the west. In the past Buckden was much more strategic and connected. This is why the powerful bishops of Lincoln built a palace here in the 12th C. Most of the buildings today date from the 1470s and could have formed the inspiration for Hampton Court Palace. Buckden is famous for being home to queen Katherine of Aragon when she was exiled from the court in London. Outside open days or pre-booked tours, the public are free to visit the inside of the modern church and walk around the grounds. On the guided tours you go inside. The tour guide for our group did a great job at pitching it to appeal to people with very different ages and levels of knowledge.
The church is in three separate parts - the 1950s Church of St Hugh of Lincoln is a simple and uncluttered space with colourful stained glass. The Lady chapel is even more striking with glass that commemorates Katherine. But the space I found genuinely moving was the St Claret Chapel. A really calm, reflective space with the feeling of being inside a stained glass window.
The grounds are open to the public and you can walk around to the lake/ fish ponds at the bottom - quite dry after a long summer. And through an orchard with traditional fruits including medlars and quince. The highlight in the grounds is the knot garden. This is open to the public on weekdays but you need to ask for the key. It is arranged as a working herb garden with plants that would have been available to the tudors. These include those for medicines and making dyes. If you come on one of their open days there are sometimes demonstrations of how the dyes were made. The garden was looking good at the end of a hot dry summer, which makes sense given where many of our herbs are from. The pomegranate even had some proper fruit on - Katherine's symbol.
If you can try and visit on a open day, usually timed for national heritage weekend in September. There will be talks and guided tours, demonstrations and tea and cake in the knot garden.
