Very interesting tour, especially if you into crocheting and the books by the author.
We came because we wanted a tour of the 900 year old house. The tour is given by the owner occupier and it’s very well delivered.
There is alot of history in the house and it was nice to see the house and gardens.

Fascinating time with the owner of this historic building.
We loved the doggy Birkie too.The garden was beautiful even in Nov as had no frosts yet.
I now want to read the books
We went to see the quilts which are quite incredible.

Book in advance. We turned up ad hoc as it says 'open' on the web we assumed we could turn up. This absolute gem is tucked away and takes a bit of finding. The delightful owner was gardening and greeted us, we asked if the house was open when she explained it was by prior arrangement. She asked for 10 minutes and agreed to show us round. It's a lived in family home and has been in her family for 70 years. It's delightful, her passion and love for her amazing granny shone through. We loved the house and fabulous garden. There are no loo's or cafe but an amazing home filled with fabulous stories.

A wonderful experience. The gardens are a delight and I will certainly be returning to see them, but I would definitely recommend booking a tour of the house. An amazing building, parts of it 900 years old, it is also a home. I wanted to see the attic room around which Lucy Boston’s books were based, and this did not disappoint, but there was so much, much more than I had expected.
The patchwork quilts of great beauty and incredible detail would be worth the visit alone. This was a wonderful afternoon.

Monday 5th September 2022, my husband, Jackie and I went to the village of Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire, where we went to visit The Manor Garden.
The house was built about 1130 by Payn Osmundsen, tenant of Aubrey de Vere. From 1256 – 1490 it was owned by the de Grey family. Afterwards owners were Edmund Dudley, Henry VII’s favourite and Richard Cromwell, Oliver’s grandfather.
The beautiful Miss Gunnings, Maria and Elizabeth, were born here in the 1730s. The house had been doubled in size by their uncle. The extension burnt down in 1798.
Lucy Boston bought the house on 31 May 1939 and restored it, as much as possible, back to its Norman original.
None of Lucy’s predecessors at The Manor had given much time to the garden so it was more or less two fields when she purchased it. During the war years she planted mostly trees and shrubs. As a child she was fascinated by the topiary at Levens’ Hall so she planted eight 10-foot-high yew plants on either side of the path to the river.
These became cones and then for the Queen’s Elizabeth II’s coronation she clipped them into crowns, orbs and the dove of peace from the old sceptre.
After the war she started to garden in earnest, collecting old roses and irises with the help and advice of Graham Stuart Thomas.
Now in the front garden we have a meadow patch with fritillaries followed by marsh orchids. The herbaceous borders are filled with plants to flower throughout the seasons.
Jackie, my husband and I wondered round this beautiful, colourful garden and I took lots of photographs. We even took a stroll along the river which runs at the bottom of the garden and enjoyed the views of the boats peacefully gliding along the river.
We spent some time sitting on a bench enjoying the peace and quiet of this lovely garden. I even found inspiration here as I wrote three poems called ‘In The Palm Of My Hands’, ‘Worry Warts’ and ‘Many A Tale’.
This is a lovely garden to visit if you are in the area.

Absolutely remarkable! Do the house tour! We visited to see the gardens which are really lovely and lead down to the river and footpath, intending to come back to visit the house another time, but luckily there was a house tour starting shortly and we were able to join it.
I don’t want to spoil the surprise(s), but for lovers of very old buildings (Norman), patchwork, or a certain series of childrens books, this is simply unmissable. The fascinating history was told in mesmerising style by the owner. An unexpected highlight for me was hearing the most amazing gramophone play in the music room, with tales of past music events during and after the war.
An amazing house, trapped in time, and an amazing story of the lady who restored it and lived there while writing stories and stitching patchworks, told by another amazing lady. Truly a remarkable experience. Thank you!

This garden is just so peaceful. There were few other people in the garden when we visited on a Sunday morning. The summer plants were just starting to make an appearance, but the Irises were not quite in bloom yet. They’ll be lovely, with the roses, at the beginning of June. At just £6 entry, this is an oasis of calm.

Beautiful garden - real English country garden style. Fascinating tour and definitely worth doing the tour if you can. Found out loads about the house, the history, the green knowe books and patchworks.

went yesterday - 19/05/22 - my wife's birthday and it was a glorious garden on a glorious day. We managed 2 hours looking round somebodies garden. The irises are superb at this time of year, ornamental hedging great fun too, and the whole garden wonderful. If you like gardens you wont be disappointed.
You do need to know where you're going as it's well tucked away at the end of the village.
We did have fun on the plant stall too!

Wonderful place to visit, highly recommended. The garden is beautiful and very impressive. The house (dating back to the 1100s in places) is full of charm and interest. Lucy Boston's patchworks really are works of art and are displayed on the tour, plus if you have ever read Lucy Boston's Green Knowe books, you'll recognise the house and garden. Diana Boston provided an interesting and informative tour of her house.
This place truly is unique and also has a very cheap entry fee for house and garden (£9 per adult, given the fascinating building and garden, plus literary connections, seems not a lot !)

Good Morning. Apologies for my delay it was Easter Bank Holiday. I have found the opening hours on the internet and copied them for you. I live in the next village so I am not the direct person to contact. However, if you google it there will be Donna Boston is the lady who lives there now and gives the tours. It is by appointment only but well worth you trying to contact her to make an appointment. There is no public transport you will need a car to get there. Hemmingford is just off the A14.
Best wishes to you and have a safe trip.
