Gebeld, zelfs nog in de avond ervoor en kreeg goede uitleg van de eigenaar zelf!Persoonlijke benadering! Erg fijn!! Tickets de volgende ochtend opgehaald bij hun fietsverhuur op 571 Poststreet. Daarvandaan met een Uber ritje naar Fisherman’s Wharf waar o.a. Pier 33 en Pier 39 zijn. Eerst om 12:30 uur vanaf Pier 33 gevaren naar de gevangenis op Alcatraz en hier de audiotour gehad. Erg indrukwekkend! Daarna o.a. naar de Golden Gate Bridge tijdens de Baycruise, geweldig! Vertrokken 17:30 vanaf Pier 39. Tussendoor bij Pier 39 gekeken in de shops en wat gegeten en gedronken, ook leuk even tussendoor. - Q9433VLphilippep0 bijdragenTe mijden in de mistDe boottoer was leuk en de trip naar Alcatraz ook. Jammer aan de boottoer is dat ze niet aanpassen in functie van de mist. We hebben een hele toer gedaan met dingen die niet te zien waren en toch bezocht werden omdat de audiogids op de boot zo geprogrammeerd was. Alcatraz zelf is als museum een beetje overroepen en onverzorgd. De echte beleving kon ik voelen in het gevangenisgebouw al de rest was bijna ruïne.Geschreven op 20 augustus 2023

Nice trip around the SFC Area.
Would have given 5 stars if the driver wouldn’t say it so many times that we have to give 5 stars.

We had a wonderful time! The day started with a ferry ride to Alcatraz which was super cool, from there we went to Muir national forest which was incredible, and we ended the day is Sausalito, a very cool bay town. Ben our driver was fantastic and very accommodating!

The trip and tour guide for muir Woods was amazing, Alcatraz seem like it might have been boring, but once we got the audio tour going, it was amazing as well, and we ran into an author in the bookstore. I seen on the cake.

It was a great experience with our travel guide who was from Germany. Friendly, entertaining, and informative. We could not get tickets through main alcatraz site. Doing Alcatraz first, we drove to Pier 33 and did the Alcatraz experience all on our own with instructions to meet at Black Mercedes van at 12:50. We enjoyed the tour and interesting info. The last living Alcatraz inmate William Baker was actually there and doing a book signing which of course I bought and can’t wait to read. Got back early and went just a little down towards pier 39 and got a drink at Louis. Food looked good too but didn’t eat and perhaps should have. Thought we would eat in Sausalito and didn’t have much time, but were very hungry by that time since it was the last stop.
We had a full van, comfortable though, and were driven to Muir woods to see the Redwoods. Had a little over an hour to go to bathroom, explore the path in the woods, and go to the gift shop. The map tells you how long each path will take. We were worried we might not take the right path and get back late which was not ok because they WILL leave you. So we went to bridge 2 and went back just in time. Saw some deer and a buck while waiting for van driver.
Then off to Sausalito to basically eat. We were starving and that town looked pack so when the van parked we were again on our own to be back on time, about an hour. We went to the closest place to eat, Spinnegers (exact name may not be right) down by the water which was a great view and atmosphere. We were not attended to for an uncomfortable amount of time and started worrying about getting to eat and being on time. Saved by one of the waitresses. Rockefeller oysters were delish. Halibut dry and not awesome. Scallops with bacon were delish. We were happy.
Returned to Pier 33 to 39 as matter of preference around 6pm. Decided to visit Fisherman’s Wharf or Pier 39 which are one and the same. It was awesome and felt great. We saw a bunch of good restaurants including Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump’s shrimp factory, ice cream, and more.
We almost wished we had of eaten at lunch and then ate dinner there under relaxed conditions. The weather was great, there was a juggler/circus guy and many stores. They have the best Alcatraz t-shirts, some other souvenirs, although Alcatraz did have some other unique options.
Only thing scan add is wish we had a little more time to eat lunch after Alcatraz since we wanted to eat, and wish we had a little more time in Muir woods and Sausalito. We were always rushed. One reason to do it on your own if that is important.

Your advice to grab a bite after Alcatraz is great—if you're doing the morning tour, it's always smart to eat in between. The ferry ride back also offers light snacks for purchase.

This was very enjoyable. Our guide, Dustin, was knowledgeable and made it fun. The visit to Muir wood was a lovely easy walk and Sausalito a pretty town for a lunch stop. The only less than perfect thing was that there were six of us going on the ferry to Alcatraz but one joint ticket which meant strangers sticking together , but only once we were on the ferry. Alcatraz was definitely a must do thing when visiting San Francisco..

Only had 3 hours in the island (1st part of a day tour). Wish I had a bit more time to hear the park rangers tell their stories about Alcatraz. Fascinating place!

Tour includes tickets for ferry to Alcatraz and entrance to the island. You are on your own for this portion. They send you a link with your ferry tickets and are given a time to meet the tour van at the Pier with the time of the last ferry back from Alcatraz you should take to meet the van on time. This is a good way to get to Alcatraz if you’re seeing individual tickets are sold out. Once on Alcatraz you can take the included audio tour (headsets given to you at entrance have narration available in several languages). They also have times listed for ranger or docent talks. The island is steep and hilly, but they offer a tram to the cell block tour area for those with mobility challenges. Ferries back run about every 30 mins. We walked around a bit looking at the old buildings, listened to a ranger talk on escape attempts and did the narrated cell block tour in about 90 mins and that was enough for us. No food or beverage (accept for water) is allowed on the island. Ferries have beverages and snacks and sandwiches.
After Alcatraz we met the sprinter van just outside the entrance to Pier 33 for ride to Muir Woods. Van was comfortable and guide shared some info about San Francisco as we rode along. We stopped at a pull off once across the Golden Gate Bridge for pictures and a restroom stop (about 10 mins). We were sent a text with a link to our admission tickets to Muir Woods. Once we got there the guide showed us a suggested route to take for our 1 hour and 15 mins. there. Muir Woods redwood stands were amazing. Wooden plank boardwalk to walk on in a loop and some trails going up hills if you wanted to do that. Enough time to do a loop and stop at the gift shop for a souvenir. They also have food and beverages there and some picnic tables and benches but food and drink have to stay in that area.
After Muir Woods we were driven to Sausalito where there were nice views and restaurants (fish and chips, ice cream, hamburgers, etc.) We were meeting a local friend so opted not to go back with the van and instead go on our own and return taking the Blue and Gold ferry to fisherman’s wharf. Super easy to do. (Ferry was not included, we paid at ferry terminal as we again opted to stay longer and not go back on the van with the group) Guide kindly walked us over to ferry landing so we knew where it was (just through big parking lot). We opted to eat at Copita’s and had tacos, chips and salsa and some drinks (Margaritas’s sister was our fave cocktail).
Overall nice package if you are comfortable being self guided and want to see several things with
transportation included.

All parts of the tour were amazing. I personally took the trolley to the top of Alcatraz (bad knee), so be prepared for lots of uphill climbing. Lunch at Sausalito was very good and we ate in the local park. Muir Woods was beautiful and we had lots of time to enjoy it.

how do we get back to our cars from the ferry drop off point

First one on the Golden Gate viewing point about 30 mins after the meeting point. Then on the Muir woods gift shop about 40-45 mins after that first stop. After Muir it takes about 30-35 mins to Sausalito or even less depending on traffic and you can find another bathroom there. After Sausalito it takes about 50 mins to get to where you start the alcatraz tour and they have bathrooms there too. At least on our last trip there back in December. Traffic may affect the times a bit.

My mom doesn't like to walk too much. How much walking around is there in Muir Woods or Sausalito in terms of miles?

The trail at Muir Woods is not long. There is an up hill section but it is optional as there are also trails along the stream. In fact, some of the more interesting trees are near the stream.
In Sausalito, we ate lunch and there are options involving only a short, few minutes walk.
