We were on a Road Trip across Rajasthan in December 2011 and decided to go to Munabao (120 kms from Barmer) on the Indo - Pak border to welcome the weekly Thar Express into India on its way to Jodhpur from Karachi. We'd planned to stay at the RTDC Hotel, which surprisingly was locked (although there were people on the roof - looked like some folks were having a party and did not want to be disturbed). We were directed to the circuit house which is right next door. We checked into some surprisingly well maintained modern AC Rooms with attached Dressing Rooms and clean western style bathrooms. The room was large, had cable TV, Sofa chairs, a centre table and another table to keep luggage. The Dressing room had wooden wardrobes with a built in dressing table. What was brilliant was the price: less than 400 Rs for all this. The flipside with the place, as with typical Sarkari (Government run) institutions was the lack of service orientation of the staff and rigid meal timings which meant you had to notify the kitchen in advance and be at the table at an appointed hour to avail of your meals. Also, if there aren't others (read government officials) staying you may not get food at all and be asked to eat outside (there aren't any great options in town). The food (when available) was excellent and of the home cooked variety, although you had very little choice in terms of what to eat (except at Breakfast). The Circuit house is set well back from NH 15 and the rooms attract no noise or dust from the Highway (an issue with all the private hotels in town, if you can get over their gaudy decors that is!)…
