The Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is a renowned historic attraction that features the home of the late Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President Of The United States. Located in Cove Neck, New York, the site was known as the “Summer White House” because Roosevelt frequently spent much his summers there while he was President.
In February of 2024, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a tour of Sagamore and we very much enjoyed our experience there.
During our visit, my wife and I took part in a guided tour of the Roosevelt family home at Sagamore. Our tour guide did a great job on providing a concise overview of President Theodore Roosevelt, his family and their lives at Sagamore Hill. When touring the home, we viewed and learned about a multitude of the house’s furnishings ranging from gifts given by foreign dignitaries, pieces of arts and books, and trophies awarded to Roosevelt for his big game hunts.
Our favorite parts of the house were the bedrooms of the Roosevelt family, most notably the bedroom of Theodore Roosevelt, where he passed away in 1919.
The home was also visited by prominent figures such as Thomas Edison, Russian state officials and even President Franklin Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt.
When traveling Long Island, both my wife and I highly recommend that you visit this amazing historic destination.

Took the guided tour on August 11 at 3pm. Was able to order the tickets only a day before. The guide was super knowledgeable, passionate, welcoming and interesting. He shared so many stories about the history, the family background, the meaning for many special exhibits. This was an amazing tour - we enjoyed very much and so did our 22 year old daughter. Very warm recommended. Thank you dear guide for making this tour a memorable and very special experience.

Spectacular piece of American history where you can easily spend a couple hours. The house is magnificent and the grounds are wonderful to take a stroll and enjoy nature. I'm a history buff but I managed to learn a few things about Theodore Roosevelt that I didn't know. I really enjoyed my time here.

The only access of Teddy’s home is via guided-tour. The home is so densely packed with interesting items of significance, that a first time visit via the guided tour will feel extremely rushed. Recommend multiple visits if you can.

Beautiful setting. The hike around the property (from the house to the harbor) is pleasant, with a little bit of a climb on the way back. The museum is interesting and well done. The house is fantastic, full of interesting, original pieces. And our ranger was fantastic; very knowledgable.

We do as many of the presidential sites as possible wherever we go. We were thrilled to see one for Theo. Roosevelt, a favorite president. We knew to get reservations or at least check first but there was nothing available for the time we were going to be there. Many of the people we saw there were pretty disappointed when they couldn't get in the house.
But be aware you can learn a lot at the museum and the signs around the grounds. We enjoyed it very much and learned a lot about him we didn't know. Make reservations but if you can't go anyhow.

I visited Sagamore Hill many years ago when I was in elementary school, but have recently returned since it was one of the places where I could use my National Park Pass for a free tour. Reservations for the tour had to be made in advance on the recreation.com website. Tickets for the 10am and 1pm tours were released at the beginning of the month and those for the 2pm and 3pm tours were released the day before. A $1 reservation fee applied per ticket.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable about both Theodore Roosevelt (TR) and the house. He offered many interesting stories and facts about both. Many animals that TR hunted were throughout the house. Predators were displayed with their mouths open showing off their sharp teeth. Herbivores were displayed with their mouths closed. It was easy to appreciate the house itself and imagine TR and family using it as the tour guide talked about each room.
One thing to look for is a portrait of TR yelling at stern faced Joe Cannon, the speaker of the house when TR was president. There is an actual cannon that TR named “Joe Cannon” inspired by the person. It was on view in the museum which was free to visit. We had time to look at one of the exhibits that did a good job of looking at TR’s life including family, politics and his time in the rough riders. Will have to return one day to view the other exhibits and maybe explore the nature trails on the property.

We really enjoyed the fascinating ranger-guided tour of Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill house. This historic national treasure is amazing. Only Teddy Roosevelt and his family lived here. The house is full of the original Roosevelt family furniture, artifacts, and gifts to TR from foreign dignitaries, friends and others. There are also many of his “hunting trophies” mounted throughout the house. The house was a comfortable family home, unusual, welcoming, and warm; a house for telling stories of his many adventures. President Roosevelt died in this house.
Our ranger tour guide was fantastic as he guided us from the front porch, through the main floor and 2nd floor of the house. The tour was scheduled for 45 minutes, but lasted 90 minutes. Our guide had many interesting and funny stories about the Roosevelts, and had a wealth of knowledge about the house and its history. It was one of the best guided historic home tours we have been on.
The tours are limited to ten people. There were only three tours of the house given the day we were there. We only had six people on our tour, which made it even more personal. House tour tickets are available only on-line and get selected quickly. I ended up checking the website daily about a month in advance to get tour tickets for the day we wanted to visit this NHS.
The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The small museum at the Visitor Center has some interesting exhibits about the life of Teddy Roosevelt, and is worth walking through.

Very interesting, informative and well-maintained site. We had to get tickets online, which we are happy we did. The house tour seemed rushed, and the rangers seemed annoyed - maybe it was because it was a Saturday. I get that there's a lot to see in this house but the guide didn't "tell a story", like in many other Presidential homes we visited.
The whole home is wired and alarmed, my son got a bit too close to some artifact (my fault, I wanted his picture), and get a "stern warning", while another visitor actually tapped on the same item without any repercussions.
The small museum is a gem, well worth visiting with some amazing things.

Yes, there are nature trails, open fields, and roads. Cove Neck is a quiet residential village with public roads and not much traffic. If you are really ambitious you can go down to the beach and run along the water on the sandy beach.

Am I to understand that if there are no tix available for the tour online, that I should be able to get 3 if I'm there at 9:00 in the morning? Its summertime during the week. Thanks!
Thanks!

I ordered my tickets online in advance. I recommend you do this as each tour is limited to just a few people due to small areas.

In reading about Sagamore Hill on their website I've noticed that tours of the house are only provided from Memorial Day through Labor Day; ostensibly the house is closed from the day after Labor Day until Memorial Day. From what I gather, the grounds are open year-round, but not the house. Can anyone verify my comments? Has anyone actually visited the home during October? I've tried calling the facility several times, but have only gotten a busy signal.

We were there the last week in March 2016. Luckily, we had read online that tickets go on sale at 9:00 and sell out fast. According to the website Sagamore Hill will be closed on select days including Thanksgiving Day; Christmas Day (December 25); and New Year's Day (January 1).
