#handkarren #GTFO #fieldsofopportunity

What an amazing group of people. WHO KNEW! Why isn’t this incredible trek taught in our history books? What a courageous group of people. I wish we had more people in the United States with the faith and devotion to God they displayed when they took on this arduous task. Definitely makes me want to learn more. Whoever is responsible for this memorial, Thank You!

Back when Iowa City was the end of the railroad, English Mormons arrived, in groups, and camped here while building wheel-barrow-like hand carts to carry their belongings on the long trail to Utah. Some didn’t make it. A few even died right here, at this campsite.

Nowadays it’s a pleasant and clean place for a walk through the woods. The narrow paved path connects to another wider paved trail, which skirts the Ashton cross-country course and continues to the Camp Cardinal shelter, and beyond. If you want up to a one-hour walk round trip, on a mostly flat paved surface, this is a good spot.

You can park right by the trailhead, in a big paved lot.

Think of walking over 1500 miles while takin all of your worldly goods on a hand cart. Then the reason you are doing it is because of religion in the US. I am not Mormon but this still touched me to think of what it meant to them and how much my beliefs mean.

This was a lovely blacktop walking path that memorializes those who gave up so much for something they believed in. It is wonderful that attention is given to past events that helped make this country. The path is not too long nor is it bogged down with too many markers to read. The parking is limited but I did not see anyone else there. I have been to many Mormon historical places and absolutely love the way their church gives tribute to past Mormon events. All their sites are clean, attractive, appealing, and well thought out. I have been to Nauvoo, IL and it is a MUST SEE! I am not sure that the LDS church did this particular site but I thought it was lovely.

The Mormon Handcart Site was an interesting find while walking some of the back trails in Coralville/Iowa City. We learned a lot about the Mormon's trek across Iowa.

As I leave the Coralville Mall area where the Cross Creek Trail starts it is a pretty trail that leads to this site. It is along the creek, in the woods all the way, and you are never far from Hwy 6 and the hustle and bustle of the Coralville strip. Around this site you find the University of Iowa Cross-Country course, which I find slightly more interesting than the Mormon Handcart Site. Then as you head into the campus area you come upon more athletic fields before you are in the campus area. If you are already on the trail it is worth a few minutes to look around this small area and read the historical accounts, but if the bugs are bad, they often are here, you may want to keep moving.

I'll be honest: we went to see what this was all about because the site name is, well, a bit odd. It's really just a nice walking path through the woods with a few signs marking significant spots and detailing the history.

If it's on your way in or out of town or - as another reviewer said - you happen to need a walking trail, then this is a lovely spot to stop. Though it may seem a rather random site to commemorate, those of the Mormon faith may find deeper significance or simply enjoy a lovely natural spot to pray.

At first it was a bit discouraging to see so many cars in the parking lot, but we managed to find a spot after a bit of searching. Our wives had a harder time because there were no pull-through spots for busses.

After we figured out the parking situation, we were greeted by an impressive monument commemorating the brief pause the Mormon travelers made as they traveled through town. A photo shows of one of the original Mormon handcarts lovingly inscribed with the term "GTFO." I think that must have been a common Mormon expression of the time period.

A strenuous 23.2 meter hike takes you to the campsite. While little more than a soggy patch of grass, one can only imagine the trials and tribulations that the settlers faced from the sheer boredom that met them in the river basin. The informational sign said that some of the settlers even became envious of the excitement experienced by the Donner Party.

Watch your step! The surrounding cliffs may be the longest drop-offs in the entire state. Their majesty rivals that of the Grand Canyon or Half Dome in Yosemite. Be sure to pay attention to the signs. The locals told us that this is a common place for families to pose for Christmas cards and wedding photos.

The final destination of the trail is, fittingly, the burial site. It is as somber as it is beautiful. Your mind is caught up pondering the deep questions of life, like "why are we all here?" and "what does it all mean?" and "Is the old capitol Ioma handy cap with ramps?"

If we learned anything from the Mormon Handcart Site, its that there are definitely better things out West. Even if you have to literally walk across the Rocky Mountains with everything you own haphazardly crammed in a rickety handcart, anywhere is better than here.

It was neat to read the signs and think what might have occurred in this land many years ago. There's really nothing remarkable about this site, but it's along a really nice paved walking/biking/running path.

Truly a unique piece of history when you read about the Mormons moving west with the use of handcarts. The path is paved and handicapped accessible. The trail is not very long - only about a half mile but it is a hilly venture - especially if you are pushing a wheelchair or stroller.
