Only open during the week - it’s taken me a while to knock this one off my obscure museums list!
Free entry and conveniently located nr Oxford Circus.
Spent a good hour+ looking round this tiny museum. Interesting that from very basic beginnings (ether rag anyone?!) anaesthetics has become the largest hospital specialty in the NHS.
Nice interactive info on some of the kit based around a hospital trolley, then the usual cases of bewildering instruments and info boards.

A short walk from Oxford Street this is a small but interesting museum. It's free to visit and you can just turn up and ring the bell for entry. It doesn't take long to get round the exhibits, no more than 30 minutes. A pleasant stop.

Only a few square metres of exhibition space. A few interesting artefacts, but it's all pretty half-hearted really.

The lady that normally gives the tours was not available, we were told she was off visiting another museum. The two gentlemen manning the desk did not give tours. It was nice but I'm sure it could have been a 5 star exhibit with a tour. Make sure you have the address because we got lost and the local police officer couldn't help us and the doorman at a nearby hotel was unfamiliar. Eventually we found it.

A very small museum showing showing anethetic and related instruments from about 1846 to the 1970's. Made me think how lucky I am not to be born in the 1800's. I found it most interesting but if you are not interested in anything vaguely medical, it is not for you. My only criticism is that I found it difficult to read the descriptions of the objects as the room was dimly lit and the light reflected on the glass cases in a way that it made it hard to see the writing.

Close to the BBC headquarters in Portland Place lies this small but fascinating museum devoted to the history of anaesthesia. Although advised to book ahead I turned up unannounced one afternoon, was welcomed at reception and then had the place to myself.
The museum is divided into two rooms, one housing a display of instruments and apparatus from the earliest times when ether and chloroform were just coming into use. The second contains a small specialist library in which you will find the table upon which the first operation under ether was performed.
Allow at least an hour to take in all the displays which are well supported with information boards alongside and within each display case and do not miss the ECG equipment which was used on King George V1 during his terminal illness in 1951. There is also a short introductory video you can watch, but both picture quality and sound were poor on the day of my visit.

Didn't pre-arrange a visit, but was greeted professionally and welcomed to the centre. Interesting and informative outline of history of anesthesia and inventions, many are still used in today's anesthetics. Great way to spend an hour or so.
